How Do The Word Walls Work?

Post » Fri Oct 29, 2010 6:56 am

So are they populated around the world outside like alyied wells or are they found inside of caves/dungeons? Or both? Hopefully it's a good mix and a little of both.

Personally, I hope they aren't precisely like Ayleid wells, to where they're just smattered around. If there were more of a sense of an outdoors-dungeon, or dungeons that work with exteriors as well as interiors, I'd be fine with it. But I think there needs to be a good amount of effort that goes into discovering them other than just wandering the world and stumbling across them like Ayleid Wells or Rune/Doomstones.

Hopefully you'll be able to see them in the distance (or clues to their location) and have to journey towards them, not just randomly stumble upon something like in Oblivion.

I'm still wondering how they'll work: Dragon souls give you new shouts, but the walls do to? More shout power and different shouts? More words and recipe Sentences?

Why would we know >_>

from the Mag of OXM it sounds like they are *activated* as you woould pushing aylied buttons and the such, this is conventional thinking. maybe they have something entirely different and epic.

Maybe slaying a dragon gives you a shout and if you go to a word wall then it just makes it stronger? There's been a lot of scenarios posted since the GI reveal but it's all just speculation. Hopefully we'll find out soon.

i think it'd be the other way around, if anything. reading the wall and understanding the language teaches you the word - slaying a dragon and absorbing its power would make your command of the words stronger.

Yea that probably makes more sense. Don't shouts also have three tiers?

That's my understanding. The Force Push style one for example. Tier one: "FUS" Tier two: "FUS RO" Tier three: "FUS RO DAH!"

from what we know, they are scattered in dungeons (i assume only the Nordic Ruins dungeons) and also probably at Dragon Temples (which I beleive are those outdoor arch things that are built into the mountainsides...dragons perch there and dragon worshipers (pray?) there.

As I understand it, dragon souls don't give new Shouts, instead they basically power your ability to pick the important words off the walls. The walls both give you new Shouts, and add new words to existing Shouts to make them more powerful.

I know this is kinda off-topic a but, I'm curious as to how we're gonna use them. Like are they gonna give us a list of words that we can use or do we go into a menu and select which one we want or what?

Good question. I think it will be a menu select thing. Still so much mystery surrounding these shouts. I think E3 is going to bring some clarification.

BTW, nice avatar. I have that as my wallpaper for my PS3 and my phone.

darn I was hoping that it would fit seamlessly into the gameplay. Oh well I'm sure it'll still work.

And thanks, it is a nice picture isn't it? But how do you get it on the PS3?

they've said the longer you hold the shout button the more words you say, and thus the more force behind your shout, but as far as actually PICKING THE SHOUTS it'll probably work similar to selecting a spell from the magic menu - the force push shout was called "Unrelenting Force" in a few places, which sort of implies there will be a list of the shout names.

It might fit seamlessly with gameplay because there is that new item switching favorites menu that is supposed to be pretty fast and seamless.

I got the pic on my PS3 by going to IGN and going to their Skyrim page. When you are at the Skyrim page click on the screenshots and save that pic to your photos. Just press triangle over the picture and click save image. Then go to the photo section on the XMB and set the pic as your wallpaper.

You're right. Plus just check out the concept art. That's one of the ones outside.
