That's what I thought. I would be happy with having maybe 2-3 companions that were fully fleshed out like New Vegas followed by a rabble of mercenaries that can be picked up from bars around Boston like Skyrim (without the Boston part). Fallout 3 would probably be the best compromise between the two systems. Even though I think it will be like Skyrim I hope we at least get something akin to how Fawkes was in Fallout 3.
I voted the new vegas route because I have hope
There was a mod I played in fallout 3 after finding it by accident, which alowed you to recruit a number of people based on your charisma. It didnt work very well but the idea was solid. I want companions in Fallout 4 but i dont want to be restricted to one human. I should be able to take anyone who appeals to me.
As much as I would prefer they be like Fallout New Vegas, they will most likely be the shallow pack mules they were in Skyrim.
I feel like Skyrim's system would work nicely for Fallout if they included karma requirements (and maybe Charisma checks); it was nice to have a wide selection of followers, even if they weren't as fleshed out. Didn't feel like they were as integral a part of the game, but they did feel more like part of the world.
At the very least, I want to be able to do as much with followers as I could in Skyrim, like recruiting them into a faction or hiring them as a steward/guard/whatever for my home.
Just do it how FONV did it, I want my companions to be people who are interesting and have stories.
I don't need 20+ named NPCs with recycled dialogue ty.
I HOPE they're like the New Vegas companions but considering this is Bethesda they'll likely be as shallow as Fallout 3 companions or even worse, Skyrim companions.
I'm expecting a Skyrim type deal where there are a bunch of companions but none of them have proper backstories. And if there's a marriage/romance thing it will be a case of "you did a pointless chore for me, I love you!"
And then there'll be a DLC where an NPC becomes your companion whether you want them or not and they have a big backstory.
What we really need is literal pack brahmins, only with mounted turrets.
I would like a mix of skyrim and NV. have a few prominent companions, but also a good number of less prominent ones. it would be great if they found a way to make having multiple companions work with out them getting in the way all the time.
Gut Feeling, I'm 99.9% sure that the interface for companions in New Vegas will probably be used. I could be dead wrong and it's like Skyrim but that interface of New Vegas is really nice.
I think it's going to be a mix of Skyrim and New Vegas.
Serana wasn't to bad of a companion. Se wasn't the greatest follower ever, but there was at least an effort put into creating her. Get a few like that in FO4 and I'd be pretty content.
Truth be told, as I'll be on the pc this is one of my lesser concerns. There are soooo many companion mods out there that it's relatively easy enough to skim the top and pick out a few really great ones.
I'm typically pessimistic and cynical by default, because I know better than to get my hopes up only to watch them get shattered later when none of my expectations are fulfilled.
This though?
Is there anyone here who would disagree that New Vegas handled companions best?
This I consider so overwhelmingly obvious that Bethesda couldn't possibly overlook this, fail to recognize it and not follow suit with the style of companions seen in New Vegas. If they kept Skyrim's companion style or the like, I'd be nothing short of astonished and speechless.
Will they be as well-written? Perhaps not, but I would consider it realistic to expect companions to have the same degree of depth, AKA they each have some backstories to them and a personal quest, regardless of how poorly the backstory and quest may be written.
Pretty sure they'll have fleshed out companions this time round, whether they'll be any good is another question.
Probably like Skyrim. As in: slight combat aid and pack muling, and generally being in the way.
Should be more like New Vegas, though.
