I didn't actually know the books existed. I'm relatively new to the Elder Scrolls universe, starting with Oblivion back in 2010.

So what were they like? Worth buying? Also, are they considered canon?

The first book was released in 2010, the second last year IIRC. There are only two, but they are canon. I only read the first one and I thought it was alright but I hear the second is better.
