Epic compression methods. And alot of optimization.

How do you think Fallout NV and Oblivion fit on disc?

I don't think this is really a concern...if it doesn't fit they'll put two discs in there.

Really with all Beth games, you should be downloading this to your hard drive anyway. Generally faster and more stable.

The consoles have their own formats they use to stuff more data onto their disks, not to mention that due to the lower res textures, it opens up alot more space. You can see this in several games, for example Bioshock 2 on the PC is 11GB while the 360 version is less than 7GB.

I believe I read something in the forum a while back that said Xbox games previously used only a part of the game disc, and that they now are utilizing the full disc, so I don't think this will be a problem.

Not everyone has big enough hard drives for that.

They've done it before. They're not going to pull off a Visceral Games move and put a game that's capable of fitting on one disc on a wasted second disc (those who've played or own Dead Space 2 know what I'm talking about). Oblivion was huge, Fallout 3 was huge, and it fit on one disc. It shouldn't be a problem.

Well PS3 won't have a problem with the Blu ray and I think 360 will be fine too. The longer the console is out, don't developers get better with compression and finding new techniques for these things?

Wahhh? textures have polygons now? :turtle: i believe you are still with tesselation in your mind

True, good point...in my experience it's worth it enough to go out and buy one though. MUCH better imo.

But if that's not the case, I'm sure Beth can hire some dexterous bosmer to really squeeze the data onto the discs.

Sorry, meant low res  Thanks for pointing it out, I'll amend that. Guess it's a hazard of jumping from a tessellation discussion into this hehe.

you know, i was thinking the same thing, but maybe they might do what bioware did with ME2, but idk how they'd do that when its an open world game. but beth will figure it out, guaranteed

Not everyone has an Xbox or a PS3 or a strong enough PC.

But if they want to play, they will have to buy one.

They mentioned on one of the podcasts that they had to dump a lot of dialogue in Oblivion because of disc space limitations so it is a valid concern I guess.

Except that having a large HDD isn't a necessity to play.

True, but if they want to have DLC content, they do need one because as far as I know it requires you to save the game to the consoles HDD so that the DLC can be applied. Besides, games run so much more smoothly on the 360 if you save it to your HDD.

This. And, if you install a game into your 360 hard drive, the disc itself won't have to spin, therefore, your 360 won't overheat. (Too quickly, that is.)

Rage is 1 To big and it's still on only 1 disc.
So they'll ship it on only one disc.

Large hard drives weren't a necessity to play games on a PC in the early days either, you could run a complete game off a floppy disc. But things have changed a bit since then. You either adapt or you stop playing, it's as simple as that.
