How will others fight dragons?

Post » Wed Mar 09, 2011 9:28 am

How will other NPC's fight the dragons? Surely some soldiers/ guards will stand and fight, right? Not everyone should run, maybe all civilians, but at least some people with weapons/ fighting skills should try to help a bit?

Ex. Archers- Stay back, fire arrows.
Mages- Try some magic?
Warriors/Soldiers/Guards- Keep dragon distracted so that others can escape or attack, keep their distance but try to jab at it.

The point is, there are others who can wield weapons/magic in Skyrim, They can also fight. Although when you have a reputation for dragon slaying, they should probably back away from the dragon once all civilians are gone, and then let you do the rest.

What do you think?

This is a good question, apart from the obvious spells and bows.
Maybe this means we'll get a good AI.

EDIT: Of course there is alway the option for them to run screaming.

I don't see the sense on competent fighters letting you fight a dragon alone. After all, if you are defeated they will be the next ones to die.

This. But obviously, not everyone who can swing a sword well should jump in. Going toe to toe with a dragon takes balls, I don't see just everyone helping you.

I'd like to see everyone else just get completely obliterated by dragons. As the dragon born, you're about the only person who can even take one down right? If everybody could kill them, they wouldn't be so scary. And since even against you, the dragon's are still extremely powerful, so much that every battle's going to almost kill you (or so I hope), it'd make sense that no one else would even stand a chance.

Not that I wouldn't want to see them try. I'd like to see a few brave guys from the village run out, axes in hand, screaming at the top of their lungs.. then they get blasted by the dragon's fiery breath and die on the spot. I suppose you could be boring and try to save them before that happens, but I'd rather watch em roast, then realize it's time to start moving, otherwise I'll be next.

True, but at least some people should also fight, kinda like how guards set barricades around Oblivion gates in Oblivion. That probably took a lot of courage on their part. Maybe, if possible, guards and archers could fight from the walls of a city or fort. That would give them some cover.

Plus, if no one fought, the dragons could destroy Skyrim faster than you can kill a Annoying Fan.

Hopefully they'll be able to help fight, and with the new Magnitism feature, I won't be hitting them on accident ;)

(Also, should of replaced "others" with NPCs for the title, just to make people who look over topics know immediatley what you're talking about and click on that thread.)

Having that happening ingame would be awesome. It's concept, so who knows...
I think it's really be interesting to see the evolution in NPC reactions in this game. Making things like dragons behavior autonomous is imo a huge step forward, now let's see how they implemented peoples reactions to them. I hope it won't be simplistic run for your life (for a NPC to get to his wife first, after noticing the dragon attack on the village, and then to run with her would already be an improvement).
And about having an actualy organised response like guards splitting in groups fighting the dragons and/or covering civilians which are fleeing... well.. one can dream ^^

And if dragons could smash buildings or walls, that would also add a sense of danger or incentive to kill a dragon. If that can be done, people should also to rebuild. Otherwise all of Skyrim would become Kvatch, and that would mess up gameplay badly.

I'd like it if when peasants ran to the woods to hide from a dragon attack, when they came back they actually looked cautious and scared instead of there normal walking back like nothing happened.

I hope mages get spells that allow dragons to slow down enough to do enough DPS. I want mages to have a pretty big role in fighting even though Im a die hard melee fighter. I just like variety sometimes.

I can see guards helping out with the dragons, and they'd just take out their bows and give it a shot. Helping is one thing, but the Dovahkiin may be the only one with the balls to get close to the thing.

When a dragon attacks a town, there's probably some sort of alarm (bell tower, giant gong, etc) and the whole town might congregate and fight the dragon with whatever they have.

If this is what happens it would be good to stand back and loot the bodies after the fight

I'm pretty sure an ENTIRE town wouldn't go face to face with a dragon. Most of them are peasants anyways, and unless dragon scale is somehow very soft, I don't think they can do all that much. Besides, after one combined attack, the dragon could very well have killed 5-10 people. BTW: How hard is the dragon hide in this game? Is it easy to pierce?

Yeah, but you're the Destined Hero, and the focus of the game. If you die.... well, you see a game over screen. So what happens to the other NPCs after that isn't shown.

(Given that the Hero? is dead, yeah... they most likely die.)

Some may fight. Unless you step in, most or all of those will die. Really though, a large enough group of guards should probably be able to kill one dragon.

I'm guessing all the guards will have an NPC-specific bound-spear spell and destroy the offending dragon with a +4 Jealousy Deadric Spear of Unobtainability. Just a guess.

I guess Bethesda would use an easy solution, whitch means spendable guards will be sacrificed, important NPC like captains will survive as immortals, while villagers will be saving their kids, screaming, & hiding. :intergalactic:

As no one else is Dragon Born, so they do not hope to gain anything fighting dragons, so I think they all will try to save their lives.

There should also be more versatile weapons for guards, instead of just swords. Things like axes, maces, and whatever polearms we get would be cool. Imagine a dragon surrounded by a wall of guards with spears and axes and whatnot. And even a dragon can only handle so many guards before dying. Just because you are Dovahkiin, doesn't mean you are the only person in all of Tamriel who can kill a dragon.

im guessing.......and im hope that im wrong.......that high level guards will do absolutely nothing while your level 10 character slaughters dragons left and right. :( i really hope that im wrong. i was closing oblivion gates at level 7 while level 20 guards just stood around and did nothing the entire game. i hope that if you arent a high level character that you get slaughtered by any dragons you try and fight.

I assume dragons have a knack for ground combat? cuz itd be slightly annoying with dragons constantly doing flybys and only getting one good hack with a melee weapon until they come back around

Welp we can only go off of past games so far and as for oblivion gaurds vs deadra then it'll prolly be sumthin like "strike with sword" " guard dies from 2 hits" lol i remember my first playthrough of kvatch...so many bodies...that wasnt a battle that was a slaughter...all the ppl died except the main guard captain and the 2nd in command redgaurd...the others all died including the legion troops...they suuuuuuccckkkked...hope the gaurds in skyrim are prepared for actual battle this time
Maybe that'll make bad characters more sneaky and deceptive if swinging ur blade in ppls faces gives u a formittable fight from gaurds...Instead of being medievil jesus blade master " i gets to do wat i wants or i pillage ur face cuz i are invincible and u die from standing in one place too long gaurd"
