How will my rig do?

Post » Mon Jul 04, 2011 4:46 am

Trying to decide between the PC and Box version. I usually lean for PC but I don't feel like throwing more money at my rig if it can't handle it.

Asus P5ND Motherboard
4GB RAM
SLI 8800GT 512MB
Plenty of memory (no solid state though)
Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 3.0GHz overclocked to 3.4GHz

A little outdated I know, but how do you think it will hold up?

I'm going to guess medium settings.

Yeah, for a few hundred bucks you could get a better graphics card/processor that would probably let you play on high rather fluently. At least I'm hoping because those are my specs and that's what I'm planning on doing

I'm going to go with medium/high.
It's not too outdated, especially for a game with as much optimization as Skyrim. I'm actually expecting it to run a bit faster than Oblivion on the same hardware, due to the fact that the game should now be able to take advantage of multi-core CPUs, more than 2GB of RAM, ect.

Rather than make a new thread, i was just wondering if i should be able to get mine to on ultra settings.

CPU - I7 980x
MoBo - X58A UD7
GPU - ATI Radeon HD 6990 (Not yet bought)
RAM - 6GB @ 2000

that's the main things. i want to play on ultra first day of release for all of the skyrim glory.

i'm playing on 2X 5870's at the moment but Oblivion runs slow as a snail for some reason when i crank everything up. even when i OC the graphics and CPU

If you dont know how powerful that PC is.....stick to consoles. Your 5870's would max the game fine. Something else is wrong if you cant play Oblivion.

For the small fortune spent on that, I certainly hope so.

With a computer that nice you automatically beat the game when you put the disc into your computer.

Was that addressed to me or the other guy posting his specs?

My system ran Oblivion alright, had some hiccups and choke points here and there (probably due to the texture mods). But I'm looking for a system that is going to be able to handle Vanilla and mods... so I'm not entirely sure.

Your system will do fine on medium settings and a few mods. If you can get a slightly better processor and graphics card, I believe you'll be able to run the game on maximum settings.

Yeah I don't think Oblivion was optimized as well as it should have been, especially for things like multi-core processors.

I'm going to post my specs in this thread too.
Opinions on how to run modded Skyrim.

- Intel core i5 2500k
- Radeon Sapphire HD 6850
- Two 4 gigs of RAM, Corsair
- Power is from 650W XHX (I guess that was the brand..)

You shouldn't have anything to worry about. The 6850 is a decent card and I'm while I'm not entirely sure about the CPU I'm pretty sure I heard that one is good.

Uncheck "Vsync" In the options menu of Oblivion. I'm guessing this might be slowing you a down a little?. Tbh though, i would think you could have vsync enabled no probs with your spec, i have it enabled with my 5970 and it's almost a constent 60 fps.

If that don't work....try disabling one of your graphics cards. Not all games run smooth using 2 GPU's. You can do this by disabling "CAT AI" in the Control panel.

TO the OP. I'm guessing meduim/low settings . It will play the game for sure but all depends what your happy with in terms of sharpness (Resolution and AA) and FPS. When i play i want atleast 60 FPS (frames per second). Becuase we sit close to our monitors (most PC gamers do any way) a higher fps is very important imo.

How do you guys think my laptop will do? Gonna post the specs here instead of starting a new thread ...

Intel Core i7-2630QM 2.00GHz
6 GB RAM DDR3
AMD Radeon HD 6770M (1024MB)
Resolution: 1600 x 900 (720p)

I guess the CPU won't be a problem, but I'm not really at home in the GPU market, so what do you guys think?

I bought this laptop mainly for work, not specifically for gaming, so it may not be the most powerful thing around, but I don't really care. I don't need to have the game all maxed out, just wanna be able to play it smoothly on medium/semi-highish settings, with only a few mods (mostly bug fixes anyway).

The only thing that could really hold you back from maxing it is the VRAM. You only have 512MB and both cards are sharing it, [In SLI, 512MB + 512MB = 512MB, not 1024MB]. The CPU could prevent optimal performance, but it will run Skyrim well enough... it is a bit slow for pushing 2 GPUs now, so a better single GPU [GTX 560 Ti maybe] would be the best single upgrade. The 560 Ti runs as low as $200 and you could get ~$100 for your two 8800GTs.

AMD Radeon HD 6770M (1024MB)

A mix of Medium/High. Your GPU is based on the desktop 6670 [but with a 128bit bus] and should perform about the same. It is clocked slower, but could be OC'd to around the same clocks as the stock desktop card. The pixel fillrate is anemic, so lowering the geometry [polygons] in the menu and/or throuh any mods is something you should keep in mind before lowering other settings. Also 720p = 1280x720, I think your best image quality will be obtained if you run at the full 1600x900.

Don't we have a hardware bragging thread? Disguised as a "can I run it" of course. Yeah, ultra settings with a 6990, on three monitors. Btw, that 980x was an UTTER waste, unless you're rending video all day or folding. A 920 would've been more than enough.
To squeeze out more performance, look into the Streamline mod, use http://www.ntcore.com/4gb_patch.php on Oblivion.exe to unlock more RAM usage potential, and lower your standards, honestly. Oblivion was not optimized for modern tech.

As for OP, I HIGHLY suggest a new graphics card. A new processor would probably require a new socket, meaning a new motherboard, and I'm guessing Skyrim will be more GPU heavy. For $200~ you can pick up something really good. And it'll pay off for more than just Skyrim.

How will mine do?
Its a desktop btw

Windows 7 Home Premium
Studio XPS 8100
Intel Core i5
4GB RAM
64-bit Operating System
NVIDIA GeForce 310
Resolution: 1920 x 1080
Processor: 750 @ 2.67GHz 2.67GHz (what ever that means)

I can play oblivion pretty well on here, unless everything is cranked to max, which I don't really care that much about doing. I can't really afford to buy anything extra for my computer so I can only use what I have.

Also going to use a PCxbox360 controler.

It'll run the game, but your graphics card is going to be a major limiting factor. Depending on your power supply (PSU) wattage and connectors, I'd recommend a much beefier graphics card (not necessarily very expensive). Everything else should be more than sufficient.

I hate these threads, 'cause now everyone are going to show off their specs, even though they know they'll run the game perfectly on high settings. Just wait 'till Beth release the system requirements.
