How will stealth players take down dragons?

Post » Wed Aug 18, 2010 1:37 pm

Do you remember how Legolas took down the troll in Fellowship of the Ring? Or the big elephant in Return of the King?

Well like that, you just have to be creative.

lets see, magical minions, magic traps, bottleneck corridors made for maximum dragon breath burnage, almost unavoidable magic alarms design to wake the dragon, oh and a sleeping area designed so the dragon can sleep with only his hard, almost impenetrable scales exposed.

Wait..! So are you telling me its a near impossible situation, full of obstacles that one must use logic, skill, and pure luck to get by, in order to achieve the most epic throat slit in the game? And this is not epic how? Does this not strike you as maybe being exactly what Stealth characters are about? Such impossible odds are our specialty, why we create our characters, and that is where our heroic acts are.

This. The whole point of a stealth character is to sneak in, dodge the traps, kill the target and walk back out. While I doubt dragon lairs are in game, this aspect would truly be awesome.

But how to kill one when it's out and about? Maybe wound it, hide and follow it's to it's lair whiole itt's recovering?

no, I′m saying it′s tacticly stupid and only something a drunken idiot decides to do.

I do believe, they mentioned that you could find a dragon in a cave... i presume that is just one place they'll go to rest/sleep. With the large draw distances, finding and following a dragon might not be THAT difficult, as long as it doesn't fly to far away.

You mean... fighting head on a creature that can breath fire, fly, and crush you with its pinky toe... is not idiotic? ;)

I think that it should be near impossible to kill a dragon with a stealth character.. Unless you are well versed in all types of weaponry.. (but you wouldn't really be dominantly stealth character).
I think that stealth characters should be the ones who steal from dragons (if they are in fact protecting treasure, like in old stories.. haha), not the characters who slay them.

Still, i think that stealthy assassin characters will be a heap of fun.. and maybe in my second playthrough i will use one.

It could be that stealth players will have access to some sort of trap (a concealed ballista or something) that they can bait the dragon into

1. Bow.
2. Acrobatical dodging.
3. Hit and run (into the shadows).
4. Pray.

In all honesty...fighting a dragon in any way shape or form is rather crazy. A warrior is taking a dragon head on...not smart. A pure mage will be lightly armored, meaning they have to use their magicka wisely. If they run out, and it comes back to slowly, their done for. Realisticly, stealth is the best option. Sneeking around, trying to find the dragon at its weakest point, using poison to take it down instead of putting yourself in harms way...its really the smartest move.

There must be a dragon shout for that, if not on the soul of a dragon on the etching of a crypt wall.

Dragons have to sleep sometime...

It's a great idea, but i think it's wishful thinking. I would love to be proven wrong, but i think that would be too good to be true.

I think it will be just like any other animal, you sneak up on it, shoot it with the bow and do x16 damage, then fight conventionally.

Having sword skills may be necessary in this game to finish off a dragon.

Guys, say what !? Charging a dragon with a longsword is the last thing I would do (literally) ! If anything, stealth characters should be the best at killing dragons. If there is one enemy you should keep at a distance and snipe with your marksman skills, it's dragons. Have you seen those teeth? Those claws? Those big-ass horns?

I don't know about you, but I'd rather hide behind a rock and put a couple of arrows through its eyes before I try poking it with a piece of metal up close. :P

Yea... not to mention when I actually think about it, shooting a dragon out of the sky, watching it tumble down to earth, crashing before your feet... yea, EPIC!

Come on.... how badass would it be to take a dragon head-on.. And shove your sword into its skull..

Maybe not the best idea in theory.. But i'm definitely gonna do some John Woo style beat-down on that scaley-bird-beast..

Some great feedback so far. I figure I'll die alot trying to run around a dragon and get a few hits in while trying not to get set on fire or stomped. Guess the same could be said for mages or early level warriors. It might be cool for an agile character to be able to run up a dragons back and sink 2 daggers in its head for the killing blow. Guess we'll find out in November.

So I've just been thinking lately about my first playthrough. I generally like to start off with a stealth player, thief/assassin. I will probably dual wield daggers and use a bow at range. Most of the game will be fine with this type of player, but what about the dragons? I can see getting off a shot or two with a bow but once it gets close, i'm not sure that daggers will have enough stopping power. I don't really want to have to incorporate large blades or blunt weapons into my skill set if I don't have to. Anybody else curious about this aspect of the game?

I play as a smiler charter, probably just wont bother with dragons.

There are two Viking stories about slaying dragons. Beowulf kills one in a stand up fight and dies from burns and wounds. Sigurd kills his by digging a pit, near or in its lair, waits for it to crawl over, and assassinates in with a thrust into its belly. So there is a historical/mythological precedence to stealth killing dragons.

Without Dragon Shouts at least, the whole 'warrior going toe-to-toe with a dragon' scenario is ridiculous.

Sneaking into the lair and getting the first blow, maybe in a vulnerable spot, makes a lot more sense.

yeah, I have a hard time seeing how there will be stealth kills for dragons, kinda rob the epic feel they wanna portray, plus it be a bit cheap getting the powerful dragon shouts if you could just sneaks up and slit the dragons throat.

But then again we have not been given any suggestion the dragon hunting is the core of the main quest, for all we know you could just skip kill the dragons and go straight for the main badguy, whomever it may be.

that would be... a gigantic god-dragon that devours the world and controls time.
