How will the modding system work on the PS4 and Xbox One?

Post » Tue Dec 01, 2015 9:11 pm

I'm not familiar with Fallout mods. So when the mods come to PS4 and Xbox One, is it like downloading DLC? Let say if someone extended the map or created a new type of enemy and weapon, I just download it into my game and play it with the new mods?

I might sound stupid but is this how it's going to work?

We don't know yet, but that's probably close to right.

If it's anything like the Steam Workshop for Skyrim mods, you'll go to Bethesda.net, subscribe to any mods that strike your fancy, and they'll get downloaded and loaded into your game. You'll probably have some ability to change the load order and deactivate certain plugins, but I don't know how that'll work for consoles.

I doubt we will be able to make mods with our consoles. Most likely, you're right and it will be DLC-like in that we can only use it.

We're not sure how it's going to work on consoles but we'll be able to play people's creations on consoles too right?

Ja, I'm betting it will be available from Xbox marketplace or PlayStation store like any DLC.

Sure, if it's approved by Beth and then by Sony/Microsoft, I feel like they will make things like you are talking about available.

They say that's the plan. My guess will be a year after the XB1.

although keep in mind, I still have a high feeling that there won't be near as many mods available for the consoles as there is for the PC..

considering Microsoft and Sony's stance on "X Rated Content", and the fact some mods (graphical Overhauls and City Overhauls being two of the most popular) might require a bit more memory than consoles can provide..

I don't know if you're serious, but just to clarify for those that don't know: Todd Howard has confirmed that the Creation Kit is a PC-only thing. It's not like an in-game level editor or something like Mario Maker, it's a robust (and not very user-friendly) tool that Beth themselves used to make the game. I mean, using it with a mouse and keyboard is hassle enough, I don't think they have any interest in porting the Creation Kit over to consoles.

They had/have(?) indie developer strip poker types of games up on XBLA for the 360, IIRC.
But, I agree that there will probably be some level of censorship

I can see any overhauls that use the base game and DLC working on consoles. Graphic mods are out of the question, no new textures or retextures ...and that takes care of the question of body mods.

I think some of you guys are underestimating the new gen consoles a bit. Sure, they don't have the best video card, but the biggest impediment to large mods is usually RAM/VRAM, of which the consoles have a reasonable amount--8GB shared between the CPU and GPU. Skyrim never addressed more than 4GB of RAM, and a 2GB video card was enough to handle the game even with graphic overhaul mods. An Xbox1 or PS4 still has another 2GB to spare.

I'm sure a mod that replaced every texture with a 4K version wouldn't fly, but texture replacers or new object models that are similar in memory load to existing game assets should be fine.

I don't know, they can't very well just put a net ban on any new textures - that would screw it up for any new assets to be added. And memory limits wouldn't do much to improve performance itself, unless it was on a per-file basis. But a hard memory limit (like what used to exist for mods on the Skyrim Workshop) would just restrict DLC-sized mods like Falskaar, which can be just as stable and performance-friendly as any DLC; I imagine Bethesda would love to see that level of quality.

Technically there is no reason to forbid new textures on consoles. And Todd has already stated that they want to be as least restrictive on consoles as possible. He said that besides stuff like x-rated, copyrighted content or other stuff they are legally required to censor they will allow any content even when it can break your console. Which makes sense from a developers point of view because mods on console are a novel thing and as a developer they want to get as much data as possible to find out what works and what not.

I'm thinking it'll be a straight pipeline (other than piggybacking on XBL/PSN's servers) from user to Bethesda.net. As in, the mods won't go through MS/Sony verification nor be up on Xbox Marketplace or PlayStation Store or anything like that. Just go on Bethesda.net, cue up your mods, DL next time you start the game and are logged in to your console account (which will probably be tied to your Bethesda.net account). I just feel the console co.'s will be hands off and let Beth deal with the logistics.

Technically speaking there is no difference between mods and DLC for the previous games, they work exactly the same way.

Maybe they have changed the system for F4 since mods on consoles was planned from the beginning, but it probably still won't be any different to the user than downloading DLC.

Where did you get that info from? First time I heard that XBox Live is a requirement.

I'm pretty sure you can still get DLC and mods with a free account. No need for a monthly subscription. If I'm wrong, can someone throw down the mighty hammer of truth and correct me?

Nobody knows how it's going to work, dude. I doubt you're going to HAVE to have Xbox GOLD or Playstation Plus subscriptions, but that's just my not entirely uninformed opinion. Chill and wait for the official info before freaking out.

I know MS charges a pretty penny for each DLC / Patch a company puts out for a game, so I doubt the mods will be distributed that way (I have no idea about PS4).

It will be interesting to see how this is going to work as there are lots of moving parts that have to be meshed together to get it right.
