How will the "not really" cities be treated?

Post » Tue Mar 09, 2010 4:08 am

Just wondering, how there are 8 cities on the old maps, but currently, only 5 counted. What will become of Falkreath, Dawnstar and Winterhold? Do you think they will they be large towns, like half the size of the cities or even more, or a quarter of the size? Or maybe just normal towns with no significance? Do you thinkt they will have important services like chapels or guild halls? If they are small, do you think they will provide any sort of explanation as to why they are so small yet listed as major cities on old maps? Economic decay, destroyed in war a long time ago?

Just want your opinions.

My opinion is that it doesn't matter what people think about them because the developers will do what they want with them regardless. They will be in the game and they will have something in them. The end.

Let the mystery dwell till 11.11.11 and you can only be amazed by what they hold. Dream about it and you can only be disappointed that they did not contain what you had thought.

Perhaps they do not have courts or leaders as such, and are therefore not classified as 'cities'. Perhaps they are the size of any of the 5 cities. Perhaps they are smaller. If they are smaller I would probably agree that they are about half the size.

I think all larger towns should have chapels or guild halls, and Im also pretty sure that they will be pretty large "towns" but I could be wrong...

I believe that smaller settlements will be a part of the overworld cell, but who knows

Maybe they have been or will be Kvatch'd as part of the civil war or dragon plots.

That's no fun. Why do we speculate at all then?

I hope they're made to be more important than Oblivion's small settlements. Most of them, I believe, had nothing of importance about them. Others had a one time quest, and were never returned to again. :(

Imo, less, more detailed cities > tonnes of unimportant ones. Also makes the land seem larger.

Lol, I wouldn't really say tons. Besides the main 8 and Kvatch, there was only 10 villages, with 8 or less buildings.

Same thing happened with Sutch. Forsake the lore, lets take a city and make it a tiny ruin of a fort for some reason.

Seconding an above comment. It would be cool if one of them was nearly completely destroyed by war/dragons, and in entering the city-cell it's actually more of a dungeon that happens to be open to the sky . . . a bit like Kvatch in Oblivion.

(Perhaps a subsequent questline similar to Kvatch Rebuilt?)

IIm hoping some of the smaller towns are like keeps or large holdfasts with a few commoners
and a handful of mean at arms. Imagine walking down the road expecting to trade some deer pelts at a
smalltown and than see it being besieged by either rebel Nords or Dragons. People on the battlements shooting arrows, etc, etc
sooooooooo sick. :toughninja:

Five Big's:

Markath - Rocky tower area in trailer
Solitude
Windhelm (biggest)
Whiterun - Edoras looking city from trailer
Riften

All the rest are small, but with 10 + buildings.

Whiterun - Edoras looking city from trailer

You mean the concept art? The trailer didn't have any straw roofed buildings except those in Riverwood. http://cdnstatic.gamesas.com/akqacms/files/tes/concept_art/WhiterunCityTundra.jpg I suppose it's possible the buildings at 1:18 are Whiterun but they look pretty different to me.

And yeah, I know the big 5, that's not really what the question's about.

Oh and the fact that you can't even see any background scenery suggests that the city is raised up like in the concept art.

As for size? According to the map on the wall at BGS, Falkreath and Dawnstar both take up 9 cells on the map. Winterhold takes up 4 cells like Riverwood.

Yeah, that's the main thing that indicates it. I'm not entirely convinced they're the same place.

Maybe the civil war messed up the economy and made some cities have to get lean? Or maybe they are subject to random dragon attacks?

Does anyone else remember someone(maybe Todd) saying besides the 5 major cities there would be 20 smaller towns with 10 plus buildings? Now sites are saying 8-9 smaller towns. Thats a big gap.

Interesting. Do you have a link? From what I recall, there was originally a foreign magazine reporting 20 settlements with 10+ buildings, and later Todd saying "a dozen or so" smaller towns. Hard to say which is correct (I know Todd's the developer, but he's been known to give vague estimates about some parts of the game that aren't always accurate or consistent, but magazines have reported incorrect info before as well).

Yup, they got rid of a lot of the smaller towns. I guess the world felt too cramped.
