How would you like the Dwemer to appear in Skyrim?

Post » Fri Dec 31, 2010 10:34 pm

Now I'm not a ES lore buff, but just from what I've gathered the Dwemer were a pretty technologically advanced race in their time and there is a lot of mystery surrounding their disapperance.

So what sort of Dwemer related things would you like to encounter in Skyrim? I think it's been pretty much confirmed that Dwemer ruins are present in the world, but from there we don't know much else. I personally would like to see a few steam contraptions that they used in these ruins, maybe also we could discover some ancient magic from exploring said ruins or maybe even encounter an ancient Dwemer ghost or something (like in morrowind). I think also that Dwemer armour should be much harder to obtain than in Oblivion; after playing it it seemed that Dwemer armour only really ranked in the middle ground of all of the armour choices, and as the properties their armour comes with (resistance to corrosion, etc) are so good I think it should've been much harder to obtain than it was.

As I've said I'm not a lore buff so i'm not sure whether im treading on unsteady ground here, it's just that from an outsider's perspective the ideas i've mentioned above sound like they could be pretty cool. I think that they don't stray too far from the ES world/lore and it would be really exciting to learn more about them, it would really feel like we were stepping into the ancient past of an ancient civilization and treading in the paths of the long gone.

Anyway, thoughts?

Don't suppose you'd care to elaborate? as I, ahem, have never played morrowind. :blush2:

i would like to see a quest regarding a creation of the dwemer running rampant in their ruins acting as its guardian.

a mechanical dragon, the ultimate victory of science over religion in the eyes of the dwemer by being able to create the equivalent of an aedra with their technology and intellect.

and then their own creation turned on them, no one knew the reason why but now the creature guards the ruins both as its guardian...and proprietor.

A major town in Skyrim is built off Dwemer ruins or something. Be prepared for more Dwemer monsters (those ball guys).

nightcorba got the right idea. Personally I wouldn't mind a few steam dwemer machines too, still being about, maybe even a trap infested underground city maybe?

One cool easter egg to run into would be a Dwemer version of the Fallout 3 vault door.
Is the vault doors themselves a easter egg for the Bethesda logo?

what about the spectres found inside the ruins that would be cool

EDIT:I liked the ambient sounds maybe add the same ones in a few ruins yea and you already mentioned the spectres it was a good idea

I believe they are classical parts of the fallout series, but the gear is a popular symbol and also good for sealing doors. Coincidence.

For the topic, I guess a few Dwemer-centric sidequests would be cool, but I really wouldn't like the presence of Dwemer to be any greater than it was in Morrowind or the Ayleids were in Oblivion. While the Dwemer are cool and all, let's not forget that the main focus of the game must be on Alduin and the dragons.

Expanding their lore wouldn't be a bad idea though. Keep their disappearance a mystery (because they aren't likely to have left any more evidence in Skyrim than they did in Morrowind) but some nice tidbits about their lifestyle and technologies would be cool to learn. How their societies are structured, what they did for recreation, what their greatest achievements were, how well they interacted with other races, and how they behaved aren't things that are really elaborated upon, but many lore buffs would love to learn more.

I have to admit to not even considering the possibility of the Dwemer in Skyrim, it has been awhile since Morrowind and the virtual mountains worth of posts asking about what happened to them has died down. If I recall, MK even answered, in his backhanded sort of way.

Now that you mention it though, it is possible that the Dwemer might have left some traces in east Skyrim, and it would be nice to see a bit of that retro stuff updated and brought back.

I just hope the dungeons keep the old spirit, with all those old machines and unfamiliar objects. And not a damn hybrid between Ayleid and Dwemer ruins. And yes. I do not care if they add other new things too.
We'll see.

What I really want is the ruins to look like someone might actually have lived there at some point.
It's what I always hated about the Dwemer and Ayleid ruins.

Ayleid and Dwemer ruins have been deserted for thousands of years, take a look at Greek ruins, they don't exactly look habitable

I did say "At some point" Dwemer and Ayleid ruins(Forts too) looked like life would never have been possible there. They were just halls and treasure rooms... Were were the beds? Where were the dining halls? Where was the kitchen? Where was the storage room? Etc. etc.
Hell if they at least gave the ruins a layout that made sense I would be happy.

Dwemer ruins sort of had that vibe (Arkngthand in particular) but I agree that all Ayleid ruins seemed like a temple that was apart of a larger city

And I think it is safe to assume the Ayleids placed those traps at the end of their power, not when the cities were at their height. No reason to assume the Dwemer did the same though, I assume being destroyed from within happens a lot faster than the Alessians conquering the Ayleids, maybe constructs prowling ruins, but trap laden sanctuaries deep in the cities, where the last Dwemeri held out?

Rusting corridors, creaking walk ways, and humming light bulbs, the way it is meant to be.

I'm hoping like in Morrowind.

These bronze-rust-like corridors that gave off creaking sounds, with ancient dwemer machines guarding the hallways. The dwemer are long gone and only mysteries and treasures remain. Steam-like machines still run, but no one knows why or what they're exactly doing.

Sadly, dwemer ruins look like something quite different after seeing the Skyrim trailer. Didn't look at all like in Morrowind :(

Centurion spheres are confirmed. Mark Lampert, Skyrim's audio director and sound designer, showed one off in a dev video.

I read somewhere that steam centurions were confirmed.

It makes some sense that dwemer ruins would look different, since the climate is very different from Vvardenfell.

Actually, you can, using DOSBox. If you're really interested, head over to the Past Games forum for details. Personally, I've never really been able to get into Arena, but Daggerfall remains fairly playable... with lots of advice, since it is very, very hard compared to the way games are made today.

It'd be kind of nice to see those old, rusting ruins again, see the flicker of those old bulbs, hear their buzz and the creaking of the ruins. One thing I don't expect to see is lava rooms near the bottom, since that was a feature of the highly volcanic nature of Vvardenfell. Hopefully, we'll see some architectural and technological differences resulting from the different climate and lack of volcanic activity and materials.
