How would you react to the events of Fallout 3?

Post » Tue Dec 28, 2010 9:19 am

Say you (you sitting at your computer as you are now) woke up one day and you were standing outside Vault 101, in vault gear, your 'father' had gone missing and you needed to find him. How would you react? How would your decisions differ from those of your character?

Personally, once getting the house in Megaton I would probably call it quits, maybe do a little hunting for caps but I wouldn't go out and do missions like the Wasteland Survival Guide. If I was actually experiencing it I wouldn't keep putting myself in harm's way and settle down into safety as soon as possible. Also, the fact I can't use a gun means I wouldn't last long in the wasteland anyway.

Can't use a gun? It is a skill that can be learned unless there is a philosophical reason against them but, to each their own. I would enjoy using any gun I could find to defend myself or, if I had enough ammunition for target practice.

Anyway, I've spent my life trying to be a fairly good guy so I would continue to do so. I would do my best to disarm the bomb in Megaton so I would end up with a house.
At that point I would probably say, "The old man took off without telling me why so I hope he is happy. Maybe I'll run into him some day.". That would be about as far as that subject goes.
I might help with some of Moria's book but I sure wouldn't damage myself by breaking a leg or getting massive doses of radiation.
As one easy way to get money is to scavenge, that's what I would do. Of course this line of work has it's risks and anyone foolish enough to take a shot at me had better hit his mark with the first shot. It would be his last.
The very few raiders who have run away from me or the Enclave soldier who made no threats against me I would leave alone just as I did in the game.

After finding the mole rat converter I might take up mole rat hunting as another source of bottlecaps. Pretty easy living as long as the rat population holds out.
The fire ants could have their town and my only action there would be to take the kid out of there. He could stay at my house in Megaton until I got down to Rivet City where I would gladly send him to his aunt.
The kids at Little Lamplight probably wouldn't let me in so I would forget that place. Most of the kids there are brats so except for a place to sell stuff there's not many reasons to go there.
Slavers leave a bad taste in my mouth so I'm afraid they would have to go. No one has a right to own another person.

All in all, I think it would be an interesting life.

I think you would have to enter the wastes even if you settled in Megaton. You would need to provide for yourself and since there aren't exactly a whole ton of occupations for a displaced vault dweller i think you would need to scavenge and trade for supplies.
There are a lot more options that guns too, bows, melee weapons, explosives. That being said, there isn't much learning required to use a gun, once you have a decently sighted weapon you're off, or if you are using a handgun government teaches cia, fbi and police to start squeezing off rounds as soon as they see the front sight and not to bother lining them up. In fact after most gun battles very few survivors recall using their sights at all more of a "point and shoot." Tactical training teaches using the shooting hand as a pointer as seen in the image below and the pulling the trigger when engaging a contact, this is often used in conjunction with the "push & pull" method of shooting where the right hand is pushing into the left, note the second picture.

If everything played out the way I play my 'good guy' characters. After Adams Airforce Base, I'm usually rich, so if all that happened, I'd say 'I'm 19, I shouldnt have to deal with this bull crap' and reside move from my home in Megaton to a suite in Tenpenny Tower and stay there until I die of age.

What's the fun in that? I would get eaten by a Deathclaw. Or a Yao Guai. Or a Mole Rat, whichever finds me first

Escaping form a vault would obviously have you end up in some stuff from the vault which would give you a lotta caps. In extreme circumstances selling your pipboy 3000 to either brotherhood or outcasts would give you enough caps for you to start your own little business...

I don't think I'd be going on my sojourns to the far north unless I had at least three other people as backup.

By the way, I can use a gun because I'm English so you cannot buy one without a license (and no one buys one anyway). It may be easy to pick up but still have no clue. Maybe once I reached Megaton someone would help teach me how to use one.

Yeah you guys really get a raw deal on that. I got a CCW (concealed carry weapon permit, allows you to carry a handgun) almost instantly when i turned 21. You guys can get shotguns and some rifles for hunting though right?

If I ended up in the game, first thing first, I would seek out dogmeat. I love animals, and dogmeat could help keep me safe. After taking dogmeat with me, I would probably turn to being a hunter or scavenger. Then, once I've built up a nice stockpile of caps, I'd head off to underworld, to mingle with the ghouls, and maybe buy a bodyguard from a corrupt bartender . An extra hand can't hurt in a post-appocolyptic world. I doubt I would make any kind of permanent home, for a while, and I might be inclined to help out the locals once in a while.

Coming from a world like today, I think I would have very little helping me get through the day and hold on to life. I would of course do the best I could to survive, but I would eventually fall apart mentally, I think.

I would obviously start my journey by disarming the bomb in Megaton. Of course after beating the [censored] out of Burke. He deserves to die... After getting the house in Megaton I would probably hunt for a while, getting out the frustration of my runaway father. But I've always had a very strong bond with my father, so I would end up searching for him in the end.

I'd use my stunning good looks and mounds of charm to sweet-talk Mr. Burke into being my sugar daddy and we'd live happily ever after in our luxurious Tenpenny Suite.

Lets see...

If I woke up in the Capital Wasteland outside Vault 101. If it were my real father who went, I'd just forget about that because if you knew my history with my real father you'd understand why. Now James on the other hand seems like a pretty nice guy, but I don't know if I'd be willing to take that risk.

Since I'm a guy who likes solitude I probably wouldn't settle in Megaton. I know nothing about disarming a nuke so I doubt I'd get that house, and despite how much I love Tenpenny Tower I can't see myself nuking a town of innocent people just for an apartment. I'd probably settle in one of those abandon buildings and make my home there. Every now and then I'd go out to collect food, water, medicine, and supplies and try to avoid Raiders and dangerous critters. I'd probably travel to Megaton every once in awhile to see Doc Church and have my radiation or injuries taken care of.

*Wakes up and looks around to see a giant, deserted wasteland that looked like it was taken right out of a post apocalyptica movie*
''Bub, bub... I must be dreaming.''
*Sleeps on for another 30 minutes before waking up again*
''Huh? Uhm, guys... THIS ISN'T FUNNY! Gee, this has got to be the worst prank in history, kidnapping me while I was sleeping and shipping me down to Afghanistan. NOT FUNNY!!''
*Sees the Capital Building far in the distance*
''What's the Capitol Building doing down in Afghanistan? Wasn't it in the US yesturday? Unless... ''
*Face pales in horror*
''The terrorists must have discovered some kind of super teleportation technology thingy to target anything in the world and zap it into their domain! OH MY GOD! THAT'S WHY I'M HERE! Those damned diaperheads teleported me here! Crap! Crap! Crap!''

And it'd gone on and on and on...

It would depend on whether I was in a realistic world (you get shot, you either die or you need a month of bedrest to recover) or a world that conformed to Fallout 3 (you get shot ten times, an hour's nap will heal you 100%). In the former, I would probably die messily the first time I encountered a raider or a bunch of mole ratties. In the latter...

Well, what I would do depends on what my technical abilities were. We'll figure that I'd be an extension of my real-life character, which would put my stats at:
S - 5
P - 3 (myopic, thick glasses)
E - 4
C - 2 (limited people skills)
I - 8
A - 4
L - 5

My tag skills would be small guns (I'm no trick shot, but I'm comfortable with guns and can generally hit what I shoot at), medicine (I can patch up minor injuries), and maybe science (I'm OK with a computer), and my sole perk would be Quick Learner. So, I doubt I would be capable of disarming the nuke in Megaton, but I would be unwilling to detonate it. I expect that Simms would not allow me a place in Megaton, so I'd probably migrate to Rivet City (swim most of the way, then get my radiation healed upon arrival) and see if I could find lodgings there, in exchange for helping them get the place habitable again. Doubt I'd head out into the wasteland until I knew I could handle myself, and I had a quality weapon: a Chinese AR, maybe, or a combat shotgun. Maybe not even then.

Seeing as I don't need a mask to be mistaken for a ghoul I'd probably be safest making a home in a metro station. I'll take some of my feral buddies out with me at nights to scavenge for food and supplies.

A would move into Megaton and become Walters apprentice by helping keeping the town in shape and get a decent amount of caps especially when a take the old boys job when he dies of old age (or il murder him if he lives longer than a expect  ). A would rarely leave Megaton although a would visit the main towns such as Rivet City. A would try and avoid conflict as av never shot a gun and wouldnt like my first attempt to be up against 3 raiders. Andy Stahl would get a punch in the face though for being a cheeky git.

Some farmers carry rifles for hunting but nothing to hunt really in the UK. We have cows, pigs and sheep in farms and deer are mostly owned. Pretty good we don't have guns. It's a different case in America as you guys already have guns so banning them would push them underground but in the UK as they're fairly rare to own the problem doesn't exist and there's no need to have them.
