How do you decided where to host your mods?

Post » Fri May 13, 2011 10:43 am

Back when I released my mods Morrowind Summit was the only reliable site around. The most popular Morrowind mods download site, Morrowindfiles, vanished overnight in January 2003. Later, Euro Morrowind and several other sites vanished as well, taking entire archives full of mods with them (hundreds of which are gone forever). Morrowind Summit seemed like the only reasonable choice at the time.

I also download from Planet Elder Scrolls (as Morrowind Summit later called itself) because it hosts large files, has reasonably fast download times and, again, I feel reasonably certain it will be around the next time I'm looking for a mod.

I do not like TES Nexus because it is unfiltered. Anybody can upload garbage to TES Nexus on a whim, and do. Some use its uploading capacity as if it were a filesharing site ("If you are not Bob don't download this file"). There's too much junk to wade through on TES Nexus for my taste. This is not TES Nexus' fault, per se. It is the fault of modder who want instant uploading gratification.

i like nexus' ability to host different versions of my file, allowing me to mark them as such. i also cannot believe i forgot this, but the ability to read the readme from the webpage without downloading the whole mod, if the author has uploaded it.

I agree. Nexus is alright for downloading and uploading specific mods with links from here and such, but because of the clutter it's pretty bad if you want to look for good mods randomly through the category list.

Cannot agree more. Ability to read readme from site is invaluable. I wish it was a requirement of the modder honestly.

Personally, I copy and paste my readme into the long description. But, it is good to have the option to dl a readme if I, say, wanted to make the description flashier or something.

I remember searching for good OB mods. Organizing by rating sometime helps weed out clutter, but... well, it's like with any site, there are going to be mods you want to use, and mods that you don't want to use. Just persevere. Trial and error is inherent in the modding process. I've found quite a number of non-famous gems that don't have oodles of dl's and ratings and comments.

I haven't searched TESNexus in a while, I forget if you can have it exclude terms (boolean mechanics or otherwise) like you can with other search engines.

I usually upload to either my hosting or PES, although occasionally mirrored to the Nexus.

I prefer hosting myself for the control, speed and absolutely no restrictions. If I'm not going to do it myself, or want it to be easily available, I use PES. It's relatively simple and lets me add info, screenshots and update files, and while it may not be the fanciest place around, it's been working for quite a few years now and doesn't show any signs of disappearing. In a pinch I can also get in touch with some of the staff, which is a good thing.

I avoid the Nexus usually, partially because of the staff and their attitude and partially because of the overall site quality (their image viewer, that pops up on every mod page, was broken for months). Just not somewhere I can trust or feel comfortable uploading stuff to.

I upload to TEXNexus. Mainly because it is far far easier.

There are drawbacks. APY is much easier to get in touch with than Dark0ne and the ads at TESNexus are horrible. (Anything that opens a new window is bad)

LHammonds (Conan_Lon on these forums, I think) and Buddah are sometimes easier to get in touch with.

I have AdBlock and NoScript, so I don't know what the ad situation is like. I remember, in those days before those Addons, there were some small annoying little ads from blacktreegaming, or somesuch. I don't remember pop-up window ads, but my memory might be faulty. It would be nice if they could find a less obtrusive way to display ads to help get money to pay for servers, bandwidth, and whatnot. On the one hand, yeah, I don't like ads. On the other hand, I understand there is a financial aspect to running a huge site that hosts files that are downloaded by thousands of people every day. =/

@peachy: I do remember that time - was it a year ago? - when the Nexus was having severe problems with its servers. It seems to have been taken care of, I haven't had any trouble - but, I also don't visit the nexus as often as I used to.

I try not to run AdBlock, mainly because of TESNexus. But it is pushing me towards it. Half the problem is the fact that I use a tiling window manager. So a popup always takes up half the screen.

What I think could be great would be the ability to give links to versions of the mod in other languages. For instance, my mods are also available in Russian on Tesall. A small flag icon linking to the Russian version on tesall with the name of the translator under the flag would be great on the page of a mod. The languages I'm thinking of in particular are Russian, German, French and Polish, but there are probably mods available in other languages.

Oh and I like how on pes you can provide the link to the release thread of the mod. :)

I think that's already available on nexus, because I've seen a lot of mods with updates and translated mod versions as well for over a year now.

I also know that you can have other download links (in the mirror tab) with a mod plus they have a video tab if you made a release video.
You can also link to a release thread if you wish and to other required or recommended mods too.

Ooooh... I wasn't aware of that, it must have been added after the last time I uploaded a mod there (which was a year and a half ago :whistling: ), or maybe I just managed to miss that option. I'll have to look into that when I release my pirate outfit, thanks Leonardo! :foodndrink:

I much prefer TESNexus myself. I find PES looks really ugly, the picure system is slow and annoying, the files are poorly labelled and confusing (why does it so often hide the size?) and it has those annoying ads that stop you from changing page.

Well for my modest mod, I attempted to upload to PES first as it is the site I have always gone to for mods, but as it had problems with my upload I uploaded to GHF, where it worked like a charm. So GHF will get any further mods I release, and I'll be sure that (if we ever get it finished) Province: Cyrodiil is hosted there.

There are only 3 main things that I look for when I consider uploading "mods" to a site.

Instant publication, ability to remove/edit files, and ability to upload images. All the other stuff is just fluff really.

I upload to Nexus or some other file host, like 4share for incomplete work, for these reasons.

I use to upload to PES but I do not like waiting, ADD generation and so on. And Elric I use to upload to as well, but having to contact the admin to remove something that I do not want up anymore is really a drag.

Okay, so to summarize, these are the things that most seem to find valuable in a decent mod hosting site:

  • Large volume of traffic
  • Good admin support
  • Friendly community
  • Powerful and flexible search system
  • Ability to easily and quickly upload mods regardless of size
  • Ability to update mods easily

And these are desired features, but not necessarily *absolute must haves:*

  • Ability to upload screenshots; both by author and guests
  • Simple and "fair" rating system, or no rating system at all
  • A means of simple feedback
  • Not having an over-abundance of ads

Do you think I got the feel of the sentiments in this thread right?

Are you planning to make another mod site? :P

I myself can't tell since I haven't uploaded any mods to any sites yet, but if and when I will it will probably be PES and Nexus. Probably the only reason because it's the place where I downloaded all of my mods.

Who knows what I have planned....? :hehe:

Suffice it to say, in an effort to lay down a solid foundation for things on the horizon, I am doing a ground-up rebuild of Morrowind Modding History. Have a look-see: http://fliggerty.com/tempfiles/front-page.png

ok, I was joking with my "flip a coin" comment, but I guess I should make a serious answer.

I upload to PES for 3 main reasons: Easy control and upload, screenshots and larger traffic

I havnt used Nexus because of the way it is run though the layout and the way they handle mods is good

I dont use ELricM that much (for uploading or downloading) simply because it has no screenshot function

I prefer PES to TESNexus... while Nexus does have the nice users-can-upload-screenshots feature, I absolutely hate its user interface.

I hosted my mods at PES because that is where my favorite mods were hosted, and when I eventually discovered TESNexus, it did not entice me at all. I think it's something about the color scheme... And there is so much information on every page that it was confusing at first, and I'd rather not send a new mod user to such a confusing place. Too technical, too many links over on the right hand side. PES has a simpler, downward-flowing layout that's easier to... comprehend (? I can't think of the word).

Seconded. I find the interface at TES Nexus atrocious to use. And too many popups telling me tips for a flat belly... thanks Nexus <_< I wish I could qualify that statement a bit better, but when I opened Nexus to check, I couldn't figure it out. I dislike just about everything in the design.

Sorry to be so negative! If it helps any I do like (or at least prefer) the PES design. As a modder I only have one release, but as a mod user I've downloaded many mods over the years, and so I hosted where I always preferred to download from: PES.

Too many tiny fields to fill out, too many character restrictions that I keep forgetting about, any time I accidentally fill out something wrong on it and hit Back to correct it (because it ddoesn't take me back automatically) I have to fill out the whole miles-long bloody form again, on at least one occasion I've actually forgotten to upload the mod itself because in the jungle of things it makes you fill out it got lost in the shuffle... ugh. Uploading a mod to TES Nexus is like going to the doctor for the first time in four years.

So if something on the submit form does require some sort of validation (ie required fields such as title) it would be maybe be best if it was checked on the fly as you fill it out?
