How do you feel about pre-order bonuses?

Post » Tue Jun 21, 2011 1:12 pm

As we all know, with games these days different retailers will often offer different exclusive content to persuade you to pre-order from them. How do you feel about that if it affects Skyrim?

Feel free to elaborate on your vote.

I don't care. My friend pre-ordered Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood and got a harlequin multiplayer character, nothing special.

I think it's weird when they bundle in cool equipment or something, when it's not really part of the game's built-in loot balance. I don't really want all my characters to start the game with the Sword of Omens. Little cosmetic stuff I guess is fine, but then it's annoying if I kind of want it but would have to go through a retailer I don't like.

Bottom line, I don't really care as I'm sure the base game will have everything I need to enjoy it. And if I want extra stuff, well, duh, mods.

I was talking more about out-of-game items. Any in-game items, as you said, could pretty much just be modded in.

For instance, http://www.gamestop.com/news/e3/most-anticipated-games-e3-2011/. Scroll down to Skyrim.

I like them to an extent. The Fallout New Vegas one's I liked, and I liked the fact that you couldn't buy them online, because all they did was add some items. The Mortal Kombat and LA Noire ones, well, I woulda been pissed if they didn't let you buy them online. Those actually add content, and I don't want Skyrim to have preorder stuff like LA Noire, extra missions should be DLC or mods. Fallout New Vegas preorder bonuses would be great for Skyrim, different sets of weapons and items.

I like them, I like them to be a physical thing I can hold. No trashy armour set that will be sold as dlc after the first run on the game.

I don't want anything like day one DLC like Dragon Age 2 did, it would give it a bad name. Something like Fallout New Vegas where if you pre-order from a certain site or store you get a unique set of armor and weapons unavailable in game or downloaded for some money online, that would be perfect.
Nothing that will be sold as DLC later should be up on the pole.

I've never ordered a Collector's Edition before so I'd like the Skyrim one to be really special with something that will last. A cloth map is a good idea...it can be hung on the wall for a decoration so I think that would be very special. When I look around for a dragon pendant, they're all in the Chinese style. I wish there was a sterling silver one of the Skyrim emblem. That wouldn't be for the collector's edition though...just a thought...like WETA (I think) did with Arwen's pendant. A keychain/keyring with some kind of Skyrim logo would be great too and could be for anyone. Everyone uses keys. :) A replica of that Elder Scroll could be a cool keychain.

I voted 'Other' mainly because the extra content is available for download a couple of months later anyway on the console so if I want it I will get it at a later date.

I enjoy playing the Vanilla games as they are shipped anyway and then adding content later.

I love them if they're done properly. For instance, if you pre order Dark Souls you get an instant upgrade to the collectors edition for the same price as a standard edition. It comes with an art book, making of, metal box, etc.

Don't like anything that adds exclusive ingame content. Should be part of the game.
Let them stick to silly gimmicks like cloth maps, collectable figures, making of videos etc that I have no interest in anyway.

Voted other, because in some countries you don't have the option to get it from predetermined shops.
It just feels unfair when you don't have the option that other people have. It's a shame really

I don't like it at all. Often the content is exclusive to some store that doesn't even exist in this country, so even if I would like to get it, I can't. It's just plain stupid and kick the fans who doesn't live near game store X.

Oh, and don't insult or flame eachother :nono: *posts removed*

Its stupid. You shouldnt get anything special just because you choose one store over another. I dont give a damn about the sellers, I just want to play Skyrim.

I don't like when they spread content out because I feel like I'm missing out on content if I can only choose one. I want them all to be included in the collectors edition.

If they keep those pre-order bonuses to out-of-game stuff, I don't care. When they start making it in-game exclusives, I find that stupid. Because then it's something only available to a few under a specific set of circumstances.

And shame on the game companies for going along with it.

I don't think there should be ANY extra ingame content, because ill never get to use it, as I will probably buy Skyrim at Walmart or something. People with PC version could get similar content or better for free though, so the Idea is stupid. There should only be something physical like how Oblivion came with the Septim. Im sure Bethesda wouldn't offer exclusive digital content to retailers though.

@Mitheledh

Agreed. I have never bought any games that have offered exclusive ingame content. They wanna do that they dont get my money. But Ill buy Skyrim no matter WHAT, I trust Bethesda not to do any band wagoning though.

I chose "Other". And my motivation is that I think so called "pre-order bonuses" are some of the most disgustingly capitalistic tricks to fool simpleminded and semi-impatient gamers to buy a game while it is still as expensive as possible. The only worse example of game-related capitalism that I know of is TF2's Mann co. supply crates. Now those are outright evil.

Pretty apathetic, honestly.

The Dragon Age 1 and Mass Effect 2 bonuses turned out to svck (armor that was either unusable, ugly, or both). And the Fallout:NV ones were bad - why would you want a power boost at the beginning of a "struggle to survive & succeed" style game?

I kind of miss the days of physical pre-order bonuses - posters, soundtrack mini-CDs, stuff like that. (I still have my Parasite Eve 2 zipper pulls, Chrono Cross desk clock & soundtrack, and Legend of Mana soundtrack. :) Silly stuff, but better than in-game things.)

I'm going to pre-order it from Gamestop either way, as that's the most convenient for me.
So, If I get a shiny sword or a robot horse or something, more fun for me.

Pre-order content and collectors' additions should be about goodies packaged with the game and it should never be about exclusive in game comment.

Any and all content should be unlocked for everyone and anyone who has purchased the game.

As long as that is followed I could care less you can always drop a item in game if you do not want what advantage it gives easily.
