Depends on the play through.

Yes I know that's a copout but it's also the truth.

Both. My Male character will hunt them (BoS) and my female character will help them (Railroad).

That's a thread based on one quest.

We will probably never know who was lying in that quest.

If the institute is actualy joinable as a faction then it is entirely possible that we may be dealing with the same problem, but scaled up to incredible proportions.

For all we know right now,

The railroad itself may be a outright scam designed to assist in getting synth spies and agents into regions outside the commonwealth. After all any halfway competent Doctor will figure out sooner or later Hey! This guy ain't human! What better way of dealing with that than some story about being a runaway slave?
Or
The institute is engaged in a insain plan to preserve humanity by transplanting memories/ personalitys or brains into synthetic bodies
Or
The institute is a convenient fall guy for something else entirely.
Or
The brotherhood has been infiltrated by supporters/members of the Encave as "plan B"
Or ........

I think it's made clear by the launch trailer that the Institute will be the bad-guys, we'll just end up fighting destroying them which is what I reckon the blue-blast at the end of one of the earlier trailers was.

In Fallout 3 you can destroy the Enclave or still kill them but everyone else, in Broken Steel you can destroy the Enclave or still kill them and destroy the BoS. I suspect that swapping out Enclave with Institute will be what we get. We know that we can take down the Airship and we know from the same trailer that some big blue explosion goes off under MIT.

Btw anyone play EvE online?

I used to explain how things work by starting off by saying that if you are too paranoid to play EvE online, then you may not be Paranoid ENOUGH to play EvE online.

One example? First Corp I was in was running a tec 2 bpc operation with a few friends.

The CEOs real life girlfriend at the time found he had dumped her when she logged in and found everyone booted out including her, and all assets gone, and her ship literaly insta popped by staton defenses set to kill any non members.

He then went on to backstab at least three other corps in mutch the same way in the same year.

That may in part explain why I sometimes come up with this stuff.

not exactly...

It was made clear what several people's opinion as to what was going on was...

Not which person was telling the truth.....or even knew what the truth was....

Those people being the apparent leader of the Brotherhood of Steel expedition calling them a tumor and the Railroads view is obvious. Even some [censored] Ghoul dislikes them more than some racist smooth-skins in Diamond City. They will be the villain otherwise they would have featured with Brotherhood and Railroad in the trailer.

The way I see them is pretty much the way the movie Ex-Machina portrayed......absolutely perfect at feigning human emotions but extremely dangerous and probably psychotic. My plan is to ensure they are wiped out and no others are ever made in the future. If our playable character is a synthetic then things would become far more complicated.

And, ironically they may all be wrong as to what's actualy going on.

As I pointed out if your source of information on what is going on turns out to be a double agent for the real threat with a sob story about synth slaves, and the institute may be nothing more than a long abandoned facility that's a front for the real threat.....

Well yeah if everything we've heard people may is a lie then obviously. But I don't think that will happen. Bethesda are doing another emotional narrative like they did with Fallout 3, except instead of find Dad it's find son, husband/wife. I doubt they'll be any mass trickery involved, they're wasn't in Fallout 3 or Skyrim.

Actualy with skyrim a lot of deception and trickery was involved, including it can be argued the option to assassinate the emperor, who basically was in on the plot the whole time.

I see the BoS and the Institute on the same level. They are single minded and driven toward one goal.
The BoS is driven to collect old tech and the Institute is driven to develop new tech. They don't care about the people they kill or the plight of those around them.
I think it will be similar to the Dawnguard DLC in Skyrim. You start with the BoS by default as a means to find the Institute and once you meet them you decide your allegiance.

I Want be part of Institute since 2008. I HATE Bos since 1998. And hate railroad since 2008. If I couldn't join Institute I would be alone and wipe the Bos and railroad anyway. The tea party hippies gouls ... I don't care I am not American so your Independence stuff is just a few data I gather for watching your films. So meh, for them. In New Vegas Cesar legion were big bad and I could join them. In f3 I did what Eden told me and use the virus. So I hope could be pro Institute, I will be a Blade runner anyway

That was a side-quest.

Frankly I do hope that the Institute isn't just the main bad guy, if the Brotherhood of Steel don't like them then we'll get on like a house on fire.

I will destroy the synths AND the brotherhood if possible.. the brotherhood is 100% known to be evil.. and the synths are possibly evil.. so better be sure

100% good playthru saving the world by blowing up 1 raider faction at a time.. and really thats all the BoS is.. a high tech raider faction that does the same stuff other raider factions do.. except only in high tech stuff.

As for the synths... i just dont trust them.. i mean.. have you seen their eyes? creeepy

I'm just wondering what stance the Minutemen take on the whole synth issue... any ideas?

In my first playthrough I'm basically playing myself (as I always do the first time around) so I'll hear what all the groups have to say and make a decision based on what I think I would do. The BoS and Railroad postions seem pretty clear, but the Minutemen? Who knows...? It will be interesting to hear what they have to say.

I wouldn't call them bad guy. I hope it's more like Skyrim without a black-white story.

My stance is that there is not much difference between humans and advanced androids. So what if one is built with flesh and bone and the other is built with metal and circuits. In the movies, it is usually human discrimination that causes robots to rebel against their human masters. If humans were a bit more understanding in the Matrix Universe, then using humans as energy in the Matrix would have never happened.

Hard to say without first knowing the circumstance. Every time I say I'm going to take a certain stance in a Fallout game pre-emptively, then I figure out what's going on and I have a change of heart.

My view on the Institute, well I haven't heard their side of the story yet. So far they are just the bad guys ... so yeah ... maybe my Evil Sinister PC will try to join them. Too bad he'll have the same voice as my Benevolent Saint PC.

My view on androids ... see my sig.

I know it was Obsidian but the Legion was painted as these terrible people and you could still join them. People data mined the pip boy app and it does show the institute as a joinable faction...
