How do you get use to a keyboard and mouse?

Post » Thu Apr 10, 2014 2:17 pm

Been playing way to long with a controller. Most times all I used was a controller for Morrowind, Oblivion, Fallout 3, New Vegas and Skyrim. I dabbled with the key board for Morrowind and Oblivon. I am left handed so I was able to key into what I wanted and had no problem playing.

Finally got Skyrim for PC and was shocked I can't key map the movement controls to the right side of the key board where the key pad is. So still kept playing with my controller on my Xbox. For what ever reason, don't like the controller for the Xbox One.

So now playing Elder Scrolls Online, I was thrilled I can remap everything to the way I played Morrowind/Oblivion. Thing is now, I find it so hard to play it because I am so use to playing with a controller.

So my question is, how do people play with a controller on a PC? Thing is, I am playing ESO on a Mac. Can I buy a 360 PC controller and use it on a Mac? I have a Logitech f310 game pad which I bought for Oblivion. I finally got it to work on my old PC which was windows. Can I use the Logitech on Mac? Could I use it for ESO? Is Xpadder can be used for Mac or do I need other software. I tried Google, but getting every other result except for what I want and need.

I play on the couch, not on a table so I am not on a stable surface. Have the Mac hooked up to my TV so its like playing on a console. I use keyboard which has a key pad on it since my mac doesn't have it. I also use another key board since I learnt not to use my laptop key board for gaming since they break eventually. (well my son did it, but still lesson learnt.)

Maybe I have to get reuse to a keyboard. It seems so foriegn and hurts my fingers and hands. I guess I am so use the the 360 controller that no other controller or input device will form my hands. :P

What can I do to make it easier for me? What do you guys and girls do when playing different platforms that felt weird to your hands?

I'm in the same boat as you. Minus the Mac as my gaming computer. I have a Mac Book Pro for work.

As long as you have a wireless keyboard + mouse with good range, you should be fine with finding a comfortable way to play.

I rarely play games with a mouse and keyboard though. It's more immersive and mindless to use a controller.

Muscle Memory is the thing that is getting in your way. It just takes time, a few hours at most, to get used to the new way of controlling things. When I went from using a console exclusively to game for a few years back to the PC, it took me the better part of an afternoon to get used to the controls on the keyboard. However, once that initial period was over, it was easier to use a keyboard and mouse, plus it is more accurate for movement.

Remember, it took you a while to get used to the controller back when you started using that.

I'm doing the opposite. I'm trying to adjust to controllers and making sure every new game I buy is fully compatible (menus and all) with a gamepad/controller. Years of playing hunched forward in front of a monitor have taken it's toll on my neck. Add an auto related injury in 2012 and you see why using K&M is an issue for me.

Two things to get used to K&M:

  1. Good posture to help you endure those long gaming sessions.
  2. Level forearms to prevent wrist cramps. (raise or lower your chair or keyboard tray to allow your forearms to be perfectly parallel with the floor)

Interesting. For me it's the opposite. I like to play some games on my TV with a controller, but I find the typical first-person situation more immersive with a mouse because I find that moving my FoV using the mouse is more anologous to turning my head than what the linear acceleration of using a thumb stick provides. That, and I find sitting in front of a monitor more visually immersive than sitting 10 feet away from a TV.

Practise. Practise. Practise.

That's all you really can do.

That is what I do, but the mouse on the left side. :P

Thanks everyone, I will just keep trying and see if my muscle memory comes back. Darn fore arms are sore now. Time for a break.

Whenever going to a controll from KbM or vica verse, it's all about practice and honing where your precision comes into play, as well as remembering keybinds. I'm familiar with both, but whenever I can I will use a controller with some 3rd party software to play. Fine tune precision with the thumbs, plus all keybinds are all mapped so that the only digit that moves to another button are my thumbs. I can get way more keybinds out of a KbM, but for PvP 30-40 typically do the trick and the extras aren't needed.

When I played Morrowind I used the arrow keys and set all the buttons surrounding it and it worked great. Then I played Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and dear Talos there where WHY to many actions and key to a sign to---what I could easily toss a grenade on a controller, I had to slam my fist down on different keys to do the same action. Also I never use the ASDW keys for movement that's why there's arrow keys. IDK I prefer a controller over a keyboard and mouse, sometimes it works and sometimes it don't.

Honestly, I'm naturally good with almost any controller... It only takes me about a week before I get use to a controller and am able to master it. Keyboard + Mouse, normal controllers, guitar controllers (only took me a week and a half to go from Easy to Expert), etc...

It's just some controls are not comfortable to me so I do the classic "WASD" set up for most games.

I guess it depends on how big your screen is when you're sitting 10 feet away. I sit roughly 8 feet away from a 60" so it's a fairly solid experience.

I totally agree with you on using a mouse in FPS because it closely mimics how you would normal move your head. Although, I'd challenge those with increased mouse sensitivity to move their head has fast as they move their mouse.

Very true. Mine is only 46". We decided that we didn't want the TV to dominate the living room in our condo. Yes, "we." <_< Besides, the 60" version of my TV cost twice as much at the time, which would have been pretty outrageous. :P

I've been using a keyboard and mouse ever since I was a kid, but the only controllers I ever used were the SNES and N64.. I can't see myself using the controllers of today, because they're too different from what I used to use.

When I play a game and the default controls are not as I'd like them to be on my keyboard, I have to go into the controls and reconfigure them to what I'm use to based on my other games. Some of my games are best played only with the keyboard, while others are advisable with the keyboard and mouse together.. in terms of movement, I'm so use to the WASD keys that I don't see myself ever using anything else. I've never really used all my keys in any one game I have because I haven't needed to, but I also use the space bar and keys E and Z for various purposes across the ones I have.

In the end, it depends on the type of game I'm playing that will determine which keys are used for what.
