Your best bet would be the Anti-Material rifle, for me it takes down deathclaws in 1 sometimes 2 hits, Even Alpha and Mother deathclaws die in under 5 shots i think. Also it depends on your level, i myself is a fully leveled up character (30), if you are level 1-15 i suggest you avoid deathclaws till your skills are at a good number and you have some decent weaponry. Also, if you run into a deathclaw and you dont think you can take him than just run away, until you are sure that you can take on deathclaws, just avoid them

Early-game, I found Deathclaws best fought from a distance. Even though I was rather low-level at that time, I managed to clean up the stone quarry by striking from a safe distance - preferrably from somewhere high up and not easily reachable - with the Incinderator as well as any other distance weapon I had once my flamer fuel was out. Later in the game you have a wider selection of stuff, so it's all up to you...

From what I understand you need that poison barb weapon fro FO3 that will help cripple their legs. I'm sure you can create it, but getting the holotape for it is another story. My question is where to find the holotape or schematics? Try Veronica? Idk...

if i see them in time i sometimes throw down mines in their path
slows them down alot, then i just back up and plink them in the head

but from a good distance is preferred and no matter what weapon you choose, just use armor piercing bullets

I can usually take them down with 2 to 3 headshots from a sniper rifle using armour piercing ammo, most times my first shot is from a distance before they have noticed I am there and I can get a number of other shots in before they reach me, it helps if you can get to high ground they can't easily reach - but I play on normal difficulty so if you're on a harder setting I don't know...

The Dart Gun? I'm curious if they actually have it in New Vegas.

I DO know that in Fallout 3, the dart gun was a total secret weapon when faced against deathclaws.

In FO3, their main attack was the jumping lunge, but with the dart gun, you could cripple their legs, so not only did they walk slow, but also couldn't jump/lunge. I'm assuming there is something similar in New Vegas... probably a poison you can make to coat melee weapons, at least....

Taking out their legs is a good tactic. Once crippled, kite him. Dodging left and right when they start their leap attack helps, if you learn to time it right. At higher levels, the energy weapon crit-disintegrate should work.

You can create the mod weapons from FO3. It is a skill you can get when you advance a level. :)

Anti Material Rifle and Gauss Rifle are both good choices due to their power and knockdown ability. I don't think the dart gun is in- probably because it made it so easy to fight deathclaws.

Mines and explosives are your friend too. Set up a minefield while hidden, or perhaps some C4 charges if you have a detonator and lots of cash to buy them.
When he reaches your trap, he'll at least have his leg crippled or nearly crippled. Backpedal and shoot him in the legs with something that can penetrate his DT, like .44 SWC or .308 JSP. When his leg is crippled, he's fair game- he won't be able to catch you- shoot him until he dies.

It get's tricky when there are multiple Deathclaws attacking you. Stockpiling mines might be a good idea if you want to go deathclaw hunting.

You'll want to have separate minefields to fall back on- you don't want one deathclaw to destroy all your mines. Hopefully, the uncrippled deathclaw(s!?) will be crippled by your subsequent lines of defense and you'll be able to take them all out. Remember, if the mines don't do it, shoot the legs to finish the job- make sure to target the most damaged leg- one leg is all it takes, or at least use VATS to check the leg condition.

Now, if all else fails, your mines have all popped, and you still have angry deathclaws charging full speed ahead at you, Turbo can save your hide. It slows down time for everything but you, so you can outrun the deathclaws and take the time to aim at their legs and shoot, should you so desire.

If you're an unarmed player, you really can just beat the crap out of deathclaws with some special moves and perks- the Khan trick, learned by running drugs for the Khans, and the Ranger takedown, learned by a speech check that tells Ranger Andy of Novac that he's still a cool guy, can be very useful, as can the perk that gives melee the chance to knockdown, and piercing shot, which allows you to just punch through DT. And of course weapons like the ballistic fist and displacer glove have their own advantages.

Khan trick is a sideways power attack that picks up sand and throws it in the deathclaws beady little white eyes, stunning him. You can then follow through with a ranger takedown by running up to the stunned deathclaw, and very quickly walking backward and doing a power attack that lays the deathclaw flat out on his ass. Then just beat the crap out of him- your knockdown "super slam" will in all likelihood keep knocking him down, and if he starts to get up just use the ranger takedown to knock him down again. Just beat the crap out of him until he's dead, and feel super manly for beating up deathclaws.

Also, you can time your ranger takedown by dodging a deathclaw lunge (no small feat) and right after doing the takedown. Turbo helps with this by in all honesty, making it feasible to dodge a deathclaw lunge reliably.

Hope this helps!

Alien Blaster works very well as well, 1 or 2 shots at most to kill. Trouble is limited ammo. In Fallout 3, the Gauss Rifle would knock them down, so while one was down you could shoot another and back and fourth till they were all dead. Shooting them from a distance is probably the way to go and perhaps the Cowboy Repeater might be an option at long range.

Hmm... I see a lot of people "complaining" about deathclaws and it kind of makes me smile. I remember deathclaws back in FO1/2 when they were the "stuff of legend" and whenever you saw one you'd be like "OMGWTFRUN!!"... FO3 they were kinda pathetic if you ask me, now in FO:NV they're back on top where they belong. But I digress...

My character build focuses on boosting critical rate/damage and V.A.T.S. accuracy, I play my character as a sniper mostly as well. I really only use V.A.T.S. if I'm being lazy or there is a little too much going on 6 inches from my face... or when a big ass deathclaw is charging me at 752 mph. I don't recall what level I was at the time (probably high teens) when I acquired my sniper rifle but that weapon is like slapping people with the friggin' Hand of God, lol. I put the suppressor attachment on it and now I can one hit kill (headshot, duh) a deathclaw undetected from so far away it's completely ridiculous (free aim obviously) and should I screw up and find myself risking a "death-hug", it usually doesn't take more than two/three V.A.T.S. headshots to explode a deathclaw's head. Hell, I've one shotted Mother Deathclaws AND Alpha Male Deathclaws... More often than not though, I don't mess up and I can just pick off deathclaws all day long with NORMAL ammunition. The only time I can recall using AP ammunition was in that area across the river that has the Enclave Remnants armor and 3,293 deathclaws there and I don't even think I needed to, I just didn't want to risk a foul up, lol. :gun:

P.S. Almost forgot, I play on Normal/hardcoe difficulty. :fallout:

Spoiler
I just copy and pasted this from the other "Deathclaws WTFBBQSAUCEZOMG!!" I posted in... too many of this type of thread to just keep retyping the same thing.

Suppressed .308 sniper rifle with JHP hand loads. AMR makes too much noise.

Show them Inception, lead them to think the world they live in is unreal and let them kill themselves in a failed attempt to free themselves from it. Or just use the single biggest gun you have. Your pick.

You can find the named gauss rifle on a bunch of raiders N-NW of New Vegas, a sneak critical from that beast will outright kill them half of the time even without maxed skill.

A perk? The Dart Gun isn't in New Vegas. Very few of the crafted weapons from Fallout 3 are in New Vegas.

Sit up high on a ledge where they can't kill you and snipe them away. Anti-Material gun is the best for this.

I have killed 2 deathclaw 'nests' so far (one at the quarry and one with blind deathclaws near camp golf)

Both times I used the Gobi sniper with normal ammo, and had no problem getting sneak crits on them from afar, usualy killing them in 2-3 hits (with exception of the mother, she took loads because she was running around crazily and I KEPT MISSING :banghead: ) . In the quarry I climbed up a legde where they couldn't get to me and sniped them, while Rex and Cass were involved in some suicidal frontal charge down below and occasionally killed one or two. With the other pack of deathclaws I actually had a very close range encounter with one, but luckily Cass blocked it while I no-scoped its head off, and after that I just went very far away and used maybe 10 or 12 bullets to kill the rest of them (they are blind deathclaws, so as long as they dont hear the shot they dont suspect anything).

Also I was about level 18 when I killed the quarry ones, and level 20 when I killed the blind ones. My gun skill was roughly 80 and I hadn't added to my sneak so it was, like, 19 or something. I used VATS a few times when they were close enough for it to be effective, and either and the commando perk helped a lot, or the Gobi has realy good accuracy in VATS, because I found it very reliable.

My advice? DO NOT LET THEM REACH YOU! 1 or 2 times when I was dealing with the blind deathclaws Rex ran over to them, died in seconds, and then the ENTIRE PACK came after me. Needless to say, I did not last long.
