How do you know that a game is good?

Post » Thu Dec 15, 2011 11:57 am

When you wake up in the morning and the first thing you think about is playing that game. Your mind soon drifts to other things, but the important part is where it was first: TES:S.

I haven't felt this way about a game in a long time. Probably since Gothic 1/2.

decades of video game play experience along with good knowledge of trends games tend to take after awhile so you do not expect much more than there is to expect. Also to not compete games with each other, but more so look and recognize what each one has to offer and judge each by its own unique merits.

Also shaving in the morning getting on the game then having to shave again after finally getting off said game is also a good indication.

Alas, I wish I felt more like this about Skyrim. Maybe I've just gotten older and maybe I've just been playing it too much (already at 70 hours, mostly on one character, and I don't feel I've really gone too far into the game. my longest character in oblivion was something like 120 hours). At times I have that wow mentality about the game but when I actually go to play it it kind of fades away relatively quickly.

I know this game is good, since I think about it 24/7, plotting my next adventure - and spending 7,5 hours on this forum at work (and while I'm playing - bloody distraction!).
Plus, it invades me in my dreams at night... lol :hubbahubba:

How do you know when Charlie Parker has stopped making intelligent music, and started on the mindless noodling? A 'good' game is entirely down to your opinion.

If I substitute 'Trent Reznor' for 'Charlie Parker' (I don't know who that is), I kind of understand what you mean.

Edit: And I agree, but that wasn't the point of the post.

For me, it is really simple.

  • I want to play the game when I am not at my computer.
  • I think about the game, and I care about the story.
  • There is at least 30-50 hours of content.
  • Most of the time when I step away from playing, I am satisfied that I accomplished something.

I really loved FO3, and Skyrim is scratching that same itch.

Regards,
R

When i come home from work and the first thing i do is start the game, very few actually accomplish this. The other aspect is when i don't stop playing the game for unreasonably long periods of time. For example, in AC:R i will literally stop playing every hour or two. In skyrim i was glued there for 6+ hours at a time.

When is a game "good"?

When I do not hang around in the forums that much. And when I tend to think of the game more or less often (at work, sports etc.). Well, there are certain situations when gaming is surely the last thing on your mind  but a game ist great, when it "calls" you to the pc. Apperently, something Skyrim definitely does not achieve for me.

Its a tough question to answer. Sometimes I play a game compulsively and after awhile I ask myself why am I playing this game all does is it gets me frustrated. I would say if its rewarding in way you like. for me I like puzzles to solve in my games not just go here go there you need to have use the old grey matter as well. Nothing wrong with a few jokes thrown in. I am undecided about emotional decisions in a game at this stage.

Sulo, alec.b

Every time I think, 'I'm just about done with Skyr-', I come across something interesting/pretty. It keeps me going for a few more days, and then, 'I think I'm just about done with Skyr-', and then ...

To its credit, it's the first TES:S I've managed to play for more than a few hours. I'm level 30+ now, and I've racked up probably a few days' real time worth of play. It's not the greatest game I've ever played, not the worst, and I'm thoroughly enjoying it ... I think part of my attraction to it is its likeness to games like Quest for Glory 4 and Gothic. It's not quite dark/quirky/edgy enough to really appeal to me, but it scratches that itch well enough. :foodndrink:

I'm enjoying it. Like I said, first game I've felt this way about in a long time.

I feel a great portion of envy. Be happy and enjoy your game! I used to play TES 3 for months, New Vegas counter at 702 hrs. And Skyrim at 103 and I am not interested anymore. This is so wrong...

I know a game is good when I suddenly realize it's dark outside, I'm starving, and I've been playing for hours and hours straight without even noticing.

If a game would be good, I wouldn't be hanging on the forums dissing it. Just saying.

Pretty much most of what I've read here; if you find yourself strategizing about what you'll do on the game when you get home, you know you're hooked.

By knowing game-studios history.. I don't know why everyone thinks games like Assassin's Creed 4 and Gears of War 3 are going to be good.. And I am quite set aback by the amount of Call of Duty fans.. They get scammed every-way possible and they never notice..
