How do you like your polearms?

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 2:24 am

from this other thread http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1166429-pc-gamerxbox/ we can see that polearms are confirmed! Huzzahs for my fellow spear lovers!

so how would you like your polearm wielded? (and yes I realise it sounds like a euphemism)
admittedly i dont know much about fighting styles so i broke it down into general stereotypes

Martial Arty style - like you see the movies (in particular any movie with the monkey god) lots of spinning, swinging, slapping and quickness
Medieval style - regimented thrusting and using the butt of the spear to smack people in the face.

Also i would love if all weapons could be throwable say by holding down the trigger and the B/A button on the xbox which would make you throw whatever is in your main hand be it sword, axe, polearm or stave. (hell even a shield oddjob style)

Yeah I have seen that picture, it showed what every weapon style would do, and it said "Two handed Polearm - Pure DPS" basically.
I think they meant Two handed weapons in general with it though.
Honestly, if they were in why didn't Todd just say so, instead of "Not in the traditional sense."

Very confusing. I think we should wait for a dev confirmation before jumping straight out saying "POLEARMS ARE IN ZOMG ZOMGGGGGGGG!"
Jus to avoid disappointment in case they're not in :)

also- what the hell is with "martial arts" or "medieval" options? martial arts is NOT a hollywood crap defined by tv. and why is "medieval" different? martial is another term for war, this is war art. attacking someone with a stick could be considered a martial art. i think the words you are looking for are "extreme crazy [censored]" and "bland poking"! you have not put anything between either.

if you realy wanted to make that poll, you should have done-

how should polearm wielding look?

A: Japanese cartoon level of craziness
B: Hollywood martial art level
C: realism
D: poke,poke,poke,poke, swing.

well thats what i meant when I said that I was trying to generalise it as I dont have much knowledge about specific fighting styles. I'm coming from the point of view of a layman and described what I meant by Martial arts and medieval style as best I could. There is also an 'other' option should you prefer a different style.

"Martial art" has a specific connotation - the emphasis is on "art", as opposed to a discipline that regards itself as a "skill" or "system" exclusively. Martial arts may be martial but martial does not equate to art.

I, for one, prefer polls that do not load the wording with bias.

EDIT: Thanks for the diagram, Lady of the Sky!

again, I'm a layman and martial arts is a pretty commonly used phrase, but i'll edit the post to make it less biased

No no, you're good mate. I was actually referring to Jack's suggestions for your poll, which I think are fairly biased descriptions.

About medieval I was thinking more of using the spear as a medium distance weapon against dragons, giant spiders and riding enemies to keep the distance while still damaging them. Then, after throwing it you can engage with your axe or something. This would allow for more tactical combat.

Martial arts apply to all cultural fighting styles. Really spear & polearms fighting comes down to three main camps northern&eastern European, Mediterranean, asain (largest variety, with fighting styles so different they shouldn't be lumped into the same pile, but there it is). Having trained in many variations each has their niche they do very well against.

Though for Skyrim, northern-eastern European would be ideal. It's the fighting styles of the Gual, Viking, Germanic, and Celtic people. Very brutal and in your face.

But, atlas, polearms "in the traditional sense" aren't in the game. I do not consider long handled axes to be polearms.

How do i like them? In, that's how lol. Honestly I started on Oblivion so I never understood the big deal with Xbows and Spears. Then I played Morrowind and came back spouting "WHY WERE THESE REMOVED?!" like everyone else. I think Morrowind makes you temporarily stupid-in-love with it's weapon types and too much exposure causes permanent damage lol.
