How do you make a texture stick to a mesh?

I was helped earlier to create a small outfit, transferring a coat from one outfit to the Merc Grunt Clothing.
And I had to apply the texture to the mesh using NifSkope and it worked fine.

Today, I uninstalled Steam and moved all my games to a new drive on my computer and launched Fallout, but the texture was missing.
I opened up the mesh on NifSkope and saw that the mesh was still looking for the texture in the old drive directory where the game used to be.

How do you make it so the texture is permananet?
Like, if I wanted to distribute a mod, how would you go about doing that without requiring other people to manually attach the texture to the mesh using NifSkope?

you're probably looking at the older version of the file... NIF's don't change by themselves

do not use absolute file paths?
If i think you did what i imagine- the texture file path should begin as textures\, not something like d:\games\bethesda\data\...
