How do you play TES?

How do you play TES?

So how do you play TES? Or roleplaying games in general for that matter. The usual responses for this thread are “well I like...” and then you make a list. But for this one time, think about why you like that stuff. What's the key behind it all that makes you enjoy those things?

Personally I love the feeling of being transported to a different world. If the game is like a highly interactive novel then I'll probably love it. A sense of place, a consistent set of logical, internal rules; a consistent tone, etc. Things that are obviously "outside" of the game, or are too gamey, such as arbitrary bonuses, can ruin it for me. Same with things that break consistency or seem out of place. I.E. the sudden appearance of perks. Such as, if you "learn by doing" how do you "learn" to "ignore" a targets armor? If you can parry with a two handed sword how come you're too dumb to do it with a one handed sword? It's stuff like this which makes me wonder if I'll even like Skyrim, and no I don't care about your arguments to the contrary.

Oh, and of course the devs listen, they put so much effort into their weather stuff after everyone voted for that the most in the polls from a couple months ago. Though perhaps they listen a bit too much, as they've ignored their lighting a bit long in favor of something that was really a bit secondary.

Regardless, how do you play TES? That is the question of the day.

Crazy, crazy is how I play, think of a role, act that role, avoid anything that goes against that role.
More so in TeS than other games, as both the freedom of choice and the ability to set the difficulty to something that is actually easy allows this.

As to why: story, story, story, dialogue, dialogue, dialogue, setting, setting, humour, humour, naughty bits, combat, leveling.

What I like, freedom, choice and not being frustrated by getting stuck by some boss set to have abilities beyond that I can get.

Nice to see your at least finding new ways to express your lists of "this is why Skyrim will svck" that′s so traditional of you ;3

anyway on topic, I play TES threw the eyes of my character (aka 1st person) to give that extra bit of immersion, makes it really feel like I′m my character (instead of being some god hovering over a character, aka old school isometric)

oh and the real time combat is just sweet, again a good way to heighten the immersion, me as my character swings the sword and casts the spells. Give me fun combat, a reason to explore and quests to drive me forward, and I′ll be happy ^^

It more sounds like "Why" than "How", so I'll answer "Why" if it's ok? :)

I play, RPG games, for the immerion and the beatiful landscape, being able to forget that I'm playing the game and fully embody myself into the character I am playing as. If the RPG hinders me in some way from doing it, then I'll simply think of it as another game, which leads me to why I play other types of games.

These other games are merely for time killing and / or entertainment. usually games with multiplayer, as that brings interesting turns to the game that no AI can resemble.

The immersion, if a game can make me tone out of focus of the real world and just forget there is stuff outside of it because I am so focused on the game and atmosphere that I don′t feel anything else, then the game gets an automatic 10/10 in score for me, even if there are bad features others would use as excuses to drag the game down, it just doesn′t matter to me if a game can do that.

Both Morrowind and Oblivion achieved that and hopefully Skyrim will achieve that too.

I like to use a keyboard and mouse while yelling "MAGIC MISSILE!!!!"

I role-play these games. Write a back-story, adhere to that back-story, pick an alignment, adhere to that alignment.

I play TES without fast travel becuase the greatest ES game that was ever made didn't have it and I want all other TES games to be exactly like it in every way

but seriously I just mainly go around exploring, I have yet to meet an adventurer in Oblivion though

I have replayed oblivion sevreal times. One file i even have 300 hours on.

I walk around and enjoy the beautifull eyecandy that is Oblivion. I really love to explore the map :) infact I enjoy doing whatever the [censored] i want in Cyrodill. Its the world i enjoy. I really enjoyed GTA until Rockstar came up with the consept of GTA IV: Normal Boring Life witch i fear will be the case with Skyrim. I play TES just as i damn well please, no roleplaying, just fooling around mostly.

As far as tactics go: arm the [censored] up and rais your skills without raising your level.

First I go through the Main Quests, straight away (my character fells obliged to do so). Then, when I'm free and am not busy saving the world, I immerse myself in the world. Collect books, buy a house, do some misc. quests, join a faction. Pretty much anything that I can imagine. And mods keep me busy!

The perks didn't appear all of a sudden, they were there, just far less and not at your choice.

How do I play TES? Well I'll state from the outset I'm not a purist roleplayer such as yourself (I'm an immersionist if you read my thread ;) ) so sorry if you find the following a bit of a blow in the heart.
I allways imagine that what I am controlling in the game is not just a mashup of polygons nor a character of some story in my head or in the head of the devs. I imagine it's myself in the game... myself reincarnated as a handsome Breton Spellsword  . I pretend that I simply lost my memory and am now trying to find my way through this new world. That said, all of the choices my character makes are my own choices, his morality is the same morality as mine, and the same goes for his life perspective, preconceptions etc. And I wouldn't want it any other way. The blissful feeling of escaping into another world that's completely new and different is THE most important element of a TES game for me because TES is the best at doing that. Period.
Anything else flows directly from that - my preference of skills, game mechanics, story options - all of it revolves around that central experience of being what I want to be in the realm of Tamriel. :disguise:

If you think perks are strange how did my character in Daggerfall decide to have x3 spell points and have iron and steel be forbidden materials? Better yet, how did my character decide to be born under the lady in Morrowind? I tell you how, they did not. I use this thing called suspension of disbelief. And if you are a role-player that shouldn't be a problem for you. I assume choosing feats in D&D 3.5 would also kill "immersion" for you...

As for the question at hand;
How do I play TES? Varies between characters, by my "main" character is like a Ranger/Nightblade type character who uses magic to compliment his stealthy abilities.
Why do I play TES? Because the lore has captivated me far more than any other series, and I just personally have a soft spot for sandbox games.

( just noticed a typo! :ninja: )

Did you fix those borders yet????? They still seem structurally unrealistic and very flimsy :lmao:

And sorry for not bringing anything useful to the conversation. I'm just feeling too lazy right now to type out some long-winded spiel about how I play the game, in a thread designed specifically by tomb so he could furtively criticize and attack Skyrim.

I like to role-play to an extent, if I play a Positive aligned charachter then I stick to it, no uncalled for murders or behavior! I am also a big explorer, I like to explore every nook and cranny of the map and only fast travel if it is a location I have been to many times before or if it is for a mundane task. Things like perks don't affect my experience whatsoever, infact I consider it a reward for good gaming, at any rate it is hard to judge something like that, especially the balancing, until you actually have the game and have tried it for yourself! If it is implemented well into the leveling system (I like the idea that you have to use the skills to gain experience) then I don't see it being a problem.

I also largely ignore the Main Quest until I have done everything else.

When it comes to TES, I play a ranged assassin, only getting up close when needed. This probably developed the most from after I played so much Fallout, as I thought I was a beast to be able to kill all of an enemy town with a sniper rifle without them ever knowing what happened. (It's how I wiped out Cottonwood Cove without using the radioactive barrels.)

Playing a lot of Fallout caused me to tweak my style in Oblivion until I was using enchanted bows and arrows and I'd use some nasty poisons which more than made up for having to half my crit multiplier.

So I guess it's a case of I am, therefore I play: I'm a sneaky bastard, so I play as a sneaky bastard.
