How do you pronounce draugr?

Post » Thu Dec 08, 2011 9:13 am

I just realised I've been pronouncing it 'droo' in my head and realised that can't be it...

Anyone?

From the Bloodmoon expansion for Morrowind I think I remember it to be ''druh"...

It's "Draw-grr". That's how Todd's been saying it, and it sounds the best.

If it follows the rules of standard elvish language/pronunciation, it'd be drow-grr

I don't think I've heard anyone actually say it in game yet... :)

Probably 'draw-gur'.

I'm a little annoyed with this sort of thing, since it seems like Bethesda has thrown out the traditional pronunciations found in books in previous games like Morrowind and Daggerfall in favor of pronouncing every word phonetically.

For example, I could swear the dwemer used to be pronounced as 'dway - mer', but now in Skyrim they pronounce it exactly as it is spelled.

Also, the Bosmer. It used to be pronounced 'bow - mer' with the 's' silent. Now all NPCs, even elves, pronounce it as 'boss - mer'.

So, regardless of how draugr may have USED to be pronounced, I'd bet money on the pronunciation now being phonetic. <_<

In "The Witcher 2" Geralt pronounces it as "Draw-Gur." I assume it's the same deal.

I'm with Geralt. The man knows his beasties, for sure.

I've also got a pronuciation question. "Ysgramor". They say it "Ees-grum-mor" in-game, but I'd always thought that it should sound like... I don't know. Close to "Yus-gram-or", but with a very guttural "Y". They don't pronounce the "Y" sound at all.

What do you guys think?

I always thought Germanic/Norse words that had R's on the end treated the R as silent, but I may be wrong.

So I call them "Draugs".

Those prononuciations were never featured in-game, from what I recall.

As for how it's said, they say Drah-gur in skyrim. There's a scene during the stormcloak questline where an inexperienced soldier asks what one is, and is told it's a drah-gur.

AFAIK, Draugr is supposed to be pronounced like an Icelandic / Old Norse word. The gr makes basically the same sound it would at the start of a word like great. Problem is, native English speakers can't really make that sound very easily (it's kinda like the infamous Japanese L/R situation), so in-game, it's dra-gur.

I've never heard anyone of import argue for a specific pronunciation of Draugr.

I'm not talking about within-the-context-of-TES. Draugr aren't something that Bethesda made up. They're real nordic mythological undead.
