Right, right, because when something happens, everything before it becomes a work of fiction. But, whatever, if you want to ignore all we know of Latin digraphs in favor of your theory on elitist conspirators, be my guest.

"Fairytale" was perhaps a poor choice of words. But, sure, there may have been a time when pronouncing "what" as /wot/ was incorrect. But now it isn't.

And the relevance of Latin orthography to contemporary English pronunciation is pretty tenuous - to say the least.

Well, it took me the Todd Interview to realize you said "Kyrodiil", and not "Syrodiil". Bit too late after six years, but whatevs.

I always said "Skyrim", though. :lmao: Boy you're alone.

Huh? It is pronounced Seer-uh-dill.

Actually, it's pretty relevant, considering you flat out said that it was "invented" to demean others.

Which is how I pronounce it. Look, I don't know, I'm still fairly convinced I heard it pronounced on a GI update with a "K". Don't see how I would have made up that. Maybe it was an error from a journalist. *shrug*

Look, fair enough - I should avoid speculating about other people's psychology. Point taken.

But I wasn't referring to the pronunciation of "wh" as /hw/. That wasn't invented by recent English speakers. My point was that in contemporary English it is not true to say that pronouncing "what" as /wot/ is incorrect.

I was shocked when I heard the trailer pronounce it as "Sky Rim", for years I was saying "Skeer Rim" because I thought I heard a NPC say it in Oblivion. Now after playing as a Nord I hear another Nord say Sky Rim. Anyway was anyone else shocked at this? I never played as a Nord before or have I heard the random NPC pvssyr about Skyrim until recently.

I pronounce it as Sky Rim (Sk eye Rhim)

My husband ridiculed me the other day for pronouncing iron, as eye ron.
He says I urn. I urn????

Most people I know say "eye-urn" rather than "eye-ron," tbh. Like "eye-ron-y" or "eye-er-nee."

Is there any site that has pronunciations provided for TES terms?

It's just like it looks, Sky Rim. I imagine it is called such because it's at the top of the world. The skies rim.

I never knew there were people saying it "skrim" or whatever.

It's like being in school and the kid who dosnt know how to read is asked to read out loud.

Maybe Foreigners call it SKY RIM, but the local Nords call it SKEER RIM. I would like to see different pronounciations at different locations.

I know it's Sky-Rim as in "rim of the sky" but every once in a while in my head I say "Ska-rim," cause that's kind of how it sounds in the trailer music. Also, seems like a more Nordic pronunciation.

What'a a Cyrodiil? Oh that's when you grill a pickle.

Hmmm, i always said sky-rim and seer-uh-dill.

Makes me wonder about some of the others.

Elsweyr?

Is it pronounced els-were, els-where, else-where or els-way-er?

I always said els-were.

Sky-rim is how I have heard it pronounced by every NPC in Oblivion and by the developers and by pretty much everyone.

This says it all.

Never heard of the way you pronounce it OP

I always assumed it was pronounced "Skyrim" mostly from context from the other Provinces...they all have names that sound the way they look/are spelled, some of them quite obvious. High Rock, Hammerfell, Valenwood etc.

Some of these linguistic arguments are based on the assumption that modern English is the base for everything in Tamriel. In Old English, 'c' was either pronounced 'k' or 'ch'. 'C' never produced an 's' sound. I actually pronounced Cyrodiil "Keeruhdil" at first because I thought they were trying to go for an Old English feel (and having been studying OE at the time, saying it with a "K" felt more natural to me than with an "S" sound)

I on the other hand went straight for the "S" sound because of the word "Cycle" and the name "Cyrus".

Reminds me of how I always thought Celeborn in LotR was pronounced "Seleborn" but was actually "Keleborn".
Hell alot of LotR words are mispronounced once you start to look in the Pronunciation page Tolkien provides in the book.

Those Cs are just begging to be sounded like an S sound....

Does the Imperial Library hod an area for correct pronunciations for words? If not they should add that to the site.

I always pronounce things the way they look to me until someone corrects me. This time I was lucky, so I didn't have your problem, but I feel your pain.
