How do you pronounce Skyrim?

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 9:23 am

What'a a Cyrodiil? Oh that's when you grill a pickle.

Hmmm, i always said sky-rim and seer-uh-dill.

Makes me wonder about some of the others.

Elsweyr?

Is it pronounced els-were, els-where, else-where or els-way-er?

I always said els-were.

I'd say "Elsewhere". As the name comes from a Khajiit proverb:

Elsweyr did not exist as a separate polity until the kingdoms of Anequina and Pellitine made an alliance. While doing so, they recalled an old Khajiiti proverb that went along the lines of "perfect society is always elsewhere". In their optimism about the new alliance, they tried to bring forth good luck by appealing to that proverb.

As for other provinces I've always pronounced them like this:
Skyrim - Sky Rim
Cyrodiil - Seh Ro Dill
Morrowind - More O' Wind
Valenwood - Vay-Len Wood.

The rest are self explanatory really. High Rock, Hammerfell, Black Marsh, and Summset Isle.

Skyrim. Like the Rim of the Sky, since it's mountainous.

Not really any reason for it to be pronounced any other way.

I prefer to say Skeer-Im it sounds better in my opinion. Saying Sky Rim is going to take me some time to get used to.

Well... normally, I pronounce it as you said. I also pronounce Cyrodill "Thirodyll", because it is like it sounds applying Spanish spelling rules... although I know the good way to pronounce both words...

More weird is 'Dreugh'. I went through my entire Morrowind career calling them 'droo' - but then Oblivion came along and called them 'dreg'.

I still call then 'droo', though :P

Well for me Skyrim has always been simple to say, its two words after all, Sky-Rim. Plus the NPC's in Oblivion say it.

Well, it took me the Todd Interview to realize you said "Kyrodiil", and not "Syrodiil". Bit too late after six years, but whatevs.

I always said "Skyrim", though. :lmao: Boy you're alone.

:o I thought it was Syrodill!

On another subject, I'd like them to change it back to Summurset Isles, it sounds too simple with just "Summerset".

And topic author, Skee-rim would be alright if Beth wanted to pursue the whole Scandinavian thing, which they fortunately don't, even though I'm a Swede. I don't think they should rely too much on the real world.

And Daetnas, my physics teacher is Hungarian, so I'm well aware it'd sound funny xD

I also agree about Dreugh being "droo", I was shocked when I heard "dreg" in Oblivion! I believe it was one of the farms around IC.

My husband ridiculed me the other day for pronouncing iron, as eye ron.
He says I urn. I urn????

Except that your husband is following the correct pronunciation from the International Phonetic Alphabet.

If you don't say it how they declare it, then you are wrong. The correct way to say it (Will need an IPA chart):
/?a?.?rn/

And about Skyrim: I could see pronouncing it "skee rim" if it was spelled "Skirim".

Eye-in. (iron)

And sky-rim. (skyrim)

The way it's supposed to be pronounced! :P

Being German, I can't help pronouncing it "HIMMELSRAND". (yes, in capitals)

"Say 'Sky'." - "Sky."
"Now say 'Rim'." - "Rim."
"Okay, now 'Skyrim'." - "HIMMELSRAND!"

No, I wasn't shocked, it seemed pretty obvious how it should be pronounced to me, I mean, look at how it's written. Skyrim, that is to say, Sky Rim, the rim of the sky. Not sure why you'd pronounce it another way.

Elsweyr?

Is it pronounced els-were, els-where, else-where or els-way-er?

I'd say it's supposed to be pronounced the same way as you'd pronounce elsewhere, considering my understanding of the name's origin in the lore.

And I've always pronounced Cyrodiil as "Seer-Oh-Dill" with a clear "O" sound in the middle, because I like the sound of that better than "Seer-Ah-Dill".

It's pretty self explanatory on how it's pronounced lol. Sky - Rim.
It's said all the time in Oblivion just like that, I've never heard it called Skeerim haha. That just sounds ridiculous.

Wunderbar. That changes things. The more people kept jabbering about vikings, the more I thought to simply pronounce it the Norwegian way. That would equally make sense too.
I am honestly surprised no more people note this. In German this would have the meaning of "Wolkereif". No one beats the Germans in translating.
