SERIOUSLY?! Ooohh... Kyrodiil sounds stupid.... -ish.

Agreed "Syrodiil" sounds much better.

So screw correct pronunciation.

Why screw it when "Syrodiil" is correct?

I have always pronounced them "SKAI-rim", "SE-ro-dill", and "ELSE-weyer".

Well, it took me the Todd Interview to realize you said "Kyrodiil", and not "Syrodiil". Bit too late after six years, but whatevs.

It is pronounced "syrodiil"....

I pronounce it: Sky-rim, you know: Sky, "Skai" and then rim.

My friend on the other hand pronounces it "Sky-rim", where the Sky is not pronouced "Skai" as in Sky when you talk about what is above you when you are outside, but Sky.
Drives me nuts :)

I pronounce it as Sky Rim (Sk eye Rhim)

My husband ridiculed me the other day for pronouncing iron, as eye ron.
He says I urn. I urn????

Down South, we run 'em together (eyern).

To this day, I have no idea how to say "Nerevarine" (actually, about 80% of the words in Morrowind). I've always pronounced it like "Never"and "een".
That's why I like hearing characters talk, so I know how to pronounce stuff.

What? So there are some Americans who pronounce iron as "eye ron"? I was always told that no American said "eye ron", It's either "I urn" or "I un". Only non-English speakers say "eye ron".

Someone please make this clear to me!

Wow this topic is certainly growing. To throw out there the name Colbert is pronounced as "Cole Bear" not as it is spelt, which led me to not take Skyrim as being pronounced as it is spelled because Sky Rim sounded stupid.

Sky rim, just like it's spelled. And just like it was explained in yesterday's thread: http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1165370-pronunciation/
I always said , "Sky-rim" because I assumed it'd have an American pronunciation, but I can see how others could assume "Skyr-im"; Its not so obvious as we might assume.
It depends on the rules of the reader's language (and the things they take for granted about pronunciation).

Its an amusingly silly question I guess. Its clearly pronounced Scram! due to the silent y in the northern tongue, and the flat pronunciation of their o's, a's and i's. The exclamation mark is all my own work.

'Just like it's spelled' is a pretty bad argument to all of you who used that one. It pretty much depends on which part of the world you're from. It's rather presumptuous to think everybody's first language is English?

This being a fantasy game, it would also be reasonable to presume not all pronunciation is based on the English language. Skyrim being a northern country, roughly based off of the Nordic cultures, I thought it was pronounced [skiirim], and was also pretty sursprised when I heard it pronounced [skye-rim].

Up until this thread I had been pronouncing Cyrodiil [syro-dill]. Never would've guessed it was pronounced as a K. =)

I'm from Norway and I have always pronounced it Skyrim.
Besides, all other Nordic words, have been pronounced in an American way (Udyrfrykte etc.)

I'd say "Sky-rim" as that was how it was said in Oblivion
Although I still can't bring myself to pronounce "Bethesda" the way it's supposed to be; I've been thinking of it as "B'th-ees-dah" for too long to break the habit now :P

Seriously guys, these words are being used in the games all the time. Just play some Oblivion, and listen to how the NPCs pronounce it and you will get most of the pronunciations right.

I never knew how "dreugh" was pronounced. I always thought it was pronounced "druff". If I'm not mistaken it's actually pronounced "dregg" or something. :P

Also, Cyrodiil is not Kyrodiil, it's Syrodiil. Syrro-dill.

I guess Thu'um is pronounced Thoo-umm.

Skyrim is spelled straight forward. Sky-rim.

Khajiit = Kah-jeet

English game made by an American company... not presumptuous to think things are pronounced following the rules of English, especially since it's a compound word made of two English nouns.

If the game were set on Earth, it might be different, or if it were made by a German game company, for instance.

I think it was pronounced you-durr-frükt or something like that in Bloodmoon. It was really a pain hearing, when I know how it would have been pronounced in Norwegian, where the name comes from. Obvious nordic words should be pronounced in a nordic manner IMO.

Ou-dyr-fryk-teh. :hubbahubba:

I alwauys pronounced Skyrim as NPCs in Oblivion called it. There was no room for confusion.

But I wonder why these pronunciation issues crop up. One of the popular mods for Oblivion is Vilja the companion, voiced by Emma, a Swedish modder. She has played Morrowind extensively. In the mod, Vilja (voice acted by Emma) pronounces "Vivec" as Vye-vec. I have never played Morrowind, but thought that sounded odd. I figured it should be pronounced "vee-vek". Turns out that I am right. But uncanny how Emma who has played MW for so long still pronounces it her way.

After all, these are made up names, you can pronounce it however you want. :)
