How do you pronounce Skyrim?

I thought it was Sky-rim but my cousin pronounced it Skirim. How is it said?

Sky-rim. Exactly how it's spelled. Multiple people in Oblivion pronounce it outloud and all in the same way. The developers also say it that way in videos.

Even Max von Sydow pronounces it "Sky-rim" in the trailer.

I was shocked when I heard the trailer pronounce it as "Sky Rim", for years I was saying "Skeer Rim" because I thought I heard a NPC say it in Oblivion. Now after playing as a Nord I hear another Nord say Sky Rim. Anyway was anyone else shocked at this? I never played as a Nord before or have I heard the random NPC pvssyr about Skyrim until recently.

No, I wasn't shocked, it's pronunciation was pretty self explanatory. Also, they talk about Skyrim all the time in Bruma in Oblivion.

Sky-rim is how I have heard it pronounced by every NPC in Oblivion and by the developers and by pretty much everyone.

If you thing about it location, "Sky-rim" (the "rim" of the "sky" sounds like the most suitable pronunciation to me. I've heard all sorts of weird ways of saying it). Even a guy at Gamestop was saying it completely wrong, I was confused as to what game he was talking about for a while.

Sky rim, just like it's spelled. And just like it was explained in yesterday's thread: http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1165370-pronunciation/

Well, it took me the Todd Interview to realize you said "Kyrodiil", and not "Syrodiil". Bit too late after six years, but whatevs.

I always said "Skyrim", though. :lmao: Boy you're alone.

EDIT: Misread your post, but yeah, I don't get why people make such mistakes. By the rules of the English language, Skyrim should be "Sky-rim" and Cyrodiil should be "Syrodiil."

I can see when words like "CHIM" come into play because "CH" has a different sound whenever it wants to. The others are straight-forward though.

I don't remember that one... Plus, all the VAs said it with a soft C. Whatever, on topic, I can't see how it could possibly be pronounced a different way. Even if I heard an NPC say it "skee rim", I would still call it "Skyrim" only because "skee rim" sounds silly and doesn't really make much sense. Similarly, I know technically it's pronounced "hwut", but I'm still going to pronounce it "what" because "hwut" wounds silly (the major difference here, though is which one is correct).

I wanted it to be pronounced /skyr?m/ (/y/ is like the u in French), but I figured it would be pronounced /skair?m/.

If I could handle Cyrodiil, I feel pretty confident about Skyrim :)

No. Just no. Thinking "what" should be pronounced /hwut/ is just one of those old grammar Nazi fairy tales, like "don't end a sentence with a preposition" or "saying '5 items or less' is incorrect English".

 I misheard the interview, then ? Really "Syrodiil" ?

For someone who still doesn't know if "vow" is pronounced like "cow" or "low", that's not half bad.

No, it really is supposed to be pronounced that way. If everyone just started pronouncing "if" as "uff" so that nobody every said "if" anymore, would it be a fairy tale to say it's supposed to be pronounced "if"?

No, it's a fairytale conjured up by people wanting to feel superior. You'll not find a serious linguist who endorses such a ludicrous view.

And yes, if everyone started pronouncing "if" as /uff/, then it would become a fairytale to say it's supposed to be pronounced /if/. Languages change.

I was felt that Sky-Rim was to obvious since there are alot of words that aren't pronounced as they are spelled. I'm sure I heard a NPC pronounce it differently. Well sorry for not noticing a similar thread, I didn't really check the Skyrim forum in the last few days.

Yeah sorry about not noticing the other thread. I stayed away from Skyrim boards over the last few days because I was reading things that were pissing me off and making me anxious for the game.

Right, right, because when something happens, everything before it becomes a work of fiction. But, whatever, if you want to ignore all we know of Latin digraphs in favor of your theory on elitist conspirators, be my guest.
