How do you properly play a Elder Scrolls game?

Post » Tue Dec 06, 2011 5:29 am

FALSE.

There is no "correct" way to play. The entire premise behind this title is to "do whatever you want." If you don't want to do the main quests, you don't have to...ever. Whatever YOU choose is correct, because it's your choice, no one else's.

You're not heavily into sarcasm, are you?

just play it. jesus.

Wait! OP is Jesus? Okay man I gotta ask while I have the chance, Did Adam and Eve have navels?

But seriously, yeah the whole point of the Elder Scrolls is just do what you feel like doing. See a dragon in the distance burning a city? Save the city or don't, no one here will look down on you either way. Well I might, die for our sins but you won't save a city from a dragon? Bad savior, Bad!

I can tell you the wrong way to play it, and that is to play it as someone else tells you to. Just roll your character, venture forth, and you'll naturally do whatever is the most fun for you.

I know the topic title seems like im a elder scrolls noob or noob in general depending how you look at it, but I was wondering how do you properly play an elder scrolls game?

I have played Fallout 3 and Fallout NV, Oblivion not so much and those games were laid out pretty simple, go here do said quest and continue on, performing side quest and completing those before you go back to your main quest.

I just was curious how do you properly play? Do you go about the main quest first or side quest than back to main quest? I have a tendency to kill everything loot it and haul it back to town to try and sell it because I know that getting money is a priority in any game that has an economy system. I hate being a pack rat but is money an issue in games like this?

What is all of your opinions? Should I just treat it like a hack and slash kill dragons and explore the whole word type or deal? Or should I treat it like a diablo game and finish the main quest and go back and try to do the rest of the stuff kinda deal?

please don't flame or hate, just trying to ask for everyone's opinion so i can enjoy the game properly and the way it's meant to be played.

Well, there isn't really a proper way in the conventional sense. The only rule you adhere to is that the game is there for you to explore and exploit in any way you see fit. If you're asking in the sense that you're not sure what to do when you first start out, I would say pick any direction, arm yourself with whatever you have on you, and start moving. You'll come across something to explore, loot, or plunder. Or if that doesn't see you right, then find the nearest town, and talk to people. Get some quests on the go, and start doing some work for people. That way, you level up your character, and become stronger. Then, you'll start feeling brave enough to tackle bigger enemies, or delve deeper into dungeons without fear of death.

To be honest, TES is such a vast, and complex series, that it's perfectly fine to ask what the hell do I do, or how do I play. The series caters to free will more than almost any other game out there, and accounts for a myriad different choices that you can make. And starting such an adventure can be a daunting thing. But just take it slowly, and take each challenge the game offers with a pinch of salt.

You could play it as a hack and slash, or you could play it as a minecraft-esque game and just mine ores, sell stuff and generally bum around. The same can be said of the main quest. You don't have to do it right away. There's no punishment for it. Nor will you be punished for completing the main quest too fast, because you will be able to play on after the main quest is done, unlike fallout.

My point is, just play it the way you want to play it. Don't think of it as one genre of game or the other. Think of it as an extension of life. And all the choices you make in life come with it. So just treat it as you would a real situation, and take your time. It's all gravy. ^^

Hey Kaionai, I do have some solid advice for you.

It is true that you should just play however you want - but I see that you have some bad instincts you probably should correct.

Watch out! It is very easy to fall into the mindset you describe above, where you hunt everything down, open every container, find all the best loot, haul it back to town, and find the different merchants that will give you a good price. This is a "game-y" way to approach things and when you're playing a game it's natural to behave like this, trying to get the most "points" or gold pieces you can.

My advice: forget about gold pieces. As you said yourself, it's really just not fun trying to maximize profits for your character, but it can often feel like that's what you're "supposed" to be doing. This isn't playing; it's more like a job. Fight that urge! Getting money is not a priority unless you're having fun doing it. In most of these games people end up with millions of gold pieces and nothing to spend them on. Just forget about money.

Once you start throwing stuff away because you don't feel like carrying it around any more, you'll know you've reached the next level as a gamer. Good luck.

Such is the beauty of an individual player game. You can play any way you like without concern of what anyone else thinks of it.

Your little personal playground to do as you please.

Want a pillow fort, make one. :)

I really like your answer and your pillow fort idea.....

Some posters have given you the best advice, it really is your game, play it your way, but don't rush through it, there is so much to explore, so much that can easily be missed, if you like arcade, kill everything, if you like depth, explore, read the books, chat to the NPC's and get to know gossip, pick up quests, but most of all, have fun, don't let it become a chore.

I emerge in a deep role play my self, love that with TES series and some what the latest 2 Fallout games.
I never run around and killing everything i see, i explore, hunt for food, search for a good place to set up camp for the night, engage in random combats with enemy's or monsters/creatures, visit a town to resupply and sell off my loot and visit the local tavern...if the game i play don't have a feature that i like to have, i just mod it my self.

People have been offering up some very good advice. I can understand the pack rattiness approach I am one of those types of players. There's nothing wrong in doing that but try to make that more of a hobby or habit or part of your rules of engagement. What you engage, where you engage, how you engage are more important, then haul everything to town, store it in your houses, etc. I always liked collecting bones and I would scatter them outside all the houses I owned, it was kind of like a way to display trophies of the things I had killed and as a warning to the citizens to be fearful around my land and it just looks cool. Sometimes I would find some of the bones far from the house as the NPC's might kick them around as they are walking.

But to me it's about mood... One day after loading up the game I might be in an exploration mood so I will pick a direction, a mountain, follow a river, chase some wild life and discover something interesting to examine more closely.

I personally like to spend a small amount of time doing the MQ at first, and more time leveling up both as a player and as a guild member. I like to have my skills somewhat trained, some good gear, and more higher level fighting tools in my arsenal before I take on the MQ more seriously, but it's really up to you.

But if you just sit there and think...the game won't get played and nothing will happen, because you're thinking. Killing everything is more fun. Though I suppose the OP should do the quests before killing everything.

My advice: reevaluate "need" :)
Just remember, there will be characters who succeed at every quest in the game even though they didn't pick up those 3 silver plates and go sell them. You'll have so much more fun when you learn to travel light. I did.

I tend to play a thief on my first go through so I can access everything and explore everything, then use that knowledge with my other characters if I need an early leg up. The second run though would be as a mage, the third would be as a crusader type who completes the main quest.
