How do you remove MCA 1.6?

Post » Tue Jul 05, 2011 9:08 am

Hi, I've been playing with the Mod MCA 1.6 enabled for a while now, and I want to uninstall it. However when I uncheck it from my data files Morrowind crashes on start up. When I delete MCA completely from my Data Files folder and then try to launch the game I get a msg saying that it is unable to find Master file MCA.esm, and then it crashes. I'm not sure how or what to do to remove the mod And I'd appreciate any suggestions.

What do you mean by can't remove MCA 1.6? You must mean MCA 6.1 because that's the latest version.

What OS are you using and where have you Morrowind installed?

Are you using http://code.google.com/p/mlox/wiki/Mlox and http://mw.modhistory.com/download-95-5568 (original http://mw.modhistory.com/download-95-5565 based version) or http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1106095-wrye-mash-stand-alone/ http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1180562-yacobys-wrye-mash-fork/?

Likely the issue comes from you being in an area modded by the plugin. Try this.
  • Go to an area that the MCA doesn't affect, like the interior of a sunken ship.
  • Save.
  • Exit out, uncheck the mod, and load the game.
  • You'll get errors of missing objects, just yes to all.
  • Once loaded, save again, and reload.

This should clean your save of the module.

I did mean 6.1, (sorry wasn't thinking at the time) I'm not using any version of Wyre mash right now, and I have Morrowind in the standard location in Program files. I tried going to a shipwreck and saving there, but when I enter the game after unchecking the MCA.esm, it crashes on startup, The last thing I can see on the gamescreen is the loading screen trying to load MCA.esm (which I've unchecked) and then crashing. If I recheck it I can enter the game just fine, but I'd rather have it removed.

Which OS are you using?

I'm guessing either Vista or Win7. If this is the case, make sure you're running MW as administrator. If you don't, windows won't allow the launcher to change the ini file to remove the entry that loads MCA.

I am running win7. And when I tried loading Morrowind up as an administrator it still crashed as before when it tries to load MCA.esm. I even tried starting a new game and then unchecking MCA while in an unmodded area and it would still crash. There has to be a way to solve this, I don't think that it's a conflict with any other mods.

You'll need to set the launcher to run as admin.

To do this, open windows explorer and navigate to your MW directory, right click on the Morrowind launcher.exe, click the compatibility tab at the top, then check the box that says run as administrator. You'll need to do this for the Morrowind.exe too. Then you should be able to start the launcher, click the data files, and uncheck the MCA 6.1.esm. After that's done, use the technique from the previous post (save in an unmodded area, etc.) to make a clean save. It should be enough to do what you need. :D

I'm following all of your instructions to the letter. My Morrowind launcher and .exe are both running as administrator now, however when I uncheck MCA and then start Morrowind up it always crashes on "loading MCA.esm" This isn't a problem with saves I don't think because even if I move all of my saves to a different folder It will still crash. Surely there has to be some way to fix this.

I think that you'll really need Wrye Mash to remove .ESMs from your save.

Are you running any other mods that are dependent on MCA?

Post your load list ( at the bottom of morrowind.ini, in the morrowind directory ) so we can see if anything else may be causing the problem. :D

Thank you all for your help, but after following your advice on using Wrye Mash, I was able to succesfully remove the save file dependency on MCA 6.1, and the game will load normally without it now. I appreciate all the feedback and I wish all of you well!
