I looked through the manual and on forums, but can't find a way to repair my own gear, I always have to rely on someone with a VERY limited repair skill.

You need the same or similar type of equipment. For example if you want to repair your 10mm Pistol, you find another 10mm pistol, and whilst in your inventory hit the repair key. You'll use up the second 10mm pistol in order to repair your first one. Bear in mind how far you can repair something depends on your repair skill.

be very careful. the first item is the one that is going to be repaired. it is possible to use one of a kind item to repair a common item. which i think you would rather not do,
