How do you think they will implement the lack of a HUD?

Post » Mon Jun 21, 2010 3:52 am

It sounds like a good idea and I hope they do it well, but I've not played any games that have done the same so I don't know how it's been implemented in the past or how well it worked for those games.

There must be a way to tell when an enemy is getting weaker, that will be interesting to see, maybe they will sway and stagger as they get closer to death.

What I'm more worried about is my own health. Its not much of a problem, but still worried about Health/Magicka/Fatigue.

where does it say there won't be a HUD?

In the GI mag

In Game Informer, but the HUD is toggleable.

In the Dead Space series your character's health was displayed on your suit. I'm sure they got a way to tell us how much magicka or health we have.

except that was an entirely 3rd person game....so we'll just have to see.

Probably it's just a toggle to use for enjoying the scenery and making screenshots. Would be a bit odd when you can't see your own health or magicka reserves; or if you think you're going north to the city while you are going east to the Gorge of Eternal Peril. :P

On your suit? What does that mean... on clothing?

This is a very good thing actually. Immersion is always good, and getting useless stuff off the screen is the way to go.

low health blurs the screen and gives you tunnel vision, and everything around your field of view goes black.

low stamina (after fifteen years you finally changed the word ;_;) adds a pounding pulse to your view, coupled with maybe heavy breathing.

low magicka drains color from the world.

Something similar to RDR's way of showing you your health?

When it starts to get low your vision starts to blur, your heart rate increases, a red mist descends over your eyes; all means "Aw hell no, I'm dying!"

Don't know about magicka/fatigue though...

edit: N-n-n-ninja'd!

The HUD will likely only appear during combat, vanishing when you don't have a weapon drawn.

The only thing I'm puzzled about is how, without a constant HUD, will we access the ever-popular and well-loved-by-all compass :)

I'd imagine it's confirmation that the compass is dead.

Yep. On the back of your space suit there was a bar that indicated your health.

I hope they keep the compass at least (no need for map markers), because my sense of direction is pretty crap.
I'm a bit like
you think you're going north to the city while you are going east to the Gorge of Eternal Peril.

minimise the compass, you only need N S E W in dim letters at the bottom of the screen barely visible.

Did they say if the PC will get a different interface layout to the consoles? E.g more than 6 items per inventory screen?

Maybe they expect us to direct by the stars, sun and maps. I know city folk need big holographic arrows pointing you towards North. But if we had any sense of the landmarks on the horizon and other perceptual offerings, there really shouldn't be any troubles. EXCEPT the possibility of being lost in some dangerous dense forest. The fear of being lost in an open world game and hunted would be IMO.... brilliant!

I like the lack of a HUD in Mirror's Edge, but it's true that there are more things to consider in the HUD in older TES games. Do we even know if they are retaining item condition and health/magicka/fatigue as in earlier games?

At a guess:
1. Heath and fatigue: Could be represented by blood spatters on the screen or red shift (health only), heavy breathing (fatigue only), or desaturation or a blur effect (either).
2. Spells are now wielded in your hands, so magicka could be shown in the intensity of the spell effect on your hand or by the brightness of a glowing rune on your hand or something similar.
3. Weapon condition could be shown on the item skin, though probably only in two or three stages.
4. You probably won't know enemy health as precisely as having a bar, but maybe enemies would have "injured" animations, damage skins, and health-indicating sounds.
5. The compass and map can be in-game items, as in Thief and Far Cry 2. The journal could be too, though it probably won't be.
6. I would imagine inventory and spell selection and 4th wall breaking stuff like stats and attributes screen will still have a normal UI, but that doesn't really count as a HUD.

Bahaha, this is hilarious to me! And, I'm really happy about the fact that we can turn the compass on and off
