How do you wait?

I couldn't find any button to press on the PS4 gamepad that allows you to wait, yet there is an "hours waited" statistic, so how do you do it?

What is the purpose of waiting? Besides a pipboy stat? Does it heal you like sleep? Or is it just to wait for day or night if that matters for something you are doing?

Not sure about healing but I've only used it thrice for specific time related things like opening shops or a quest

I have encounter a quest or two that causes me to be in a certain place at a certain time, there are perks that enhance stats during certain parts of the day, and sometimes I have had to wait for an npc to return to a certain location because he was off doing who knows what.

Yeah, in some places npc's are on a schedule. So if you get there at night, everyone's asleep. If there aren't any beds nearby and you don't want to have to travel further away just to pass time while sleeping.. It's sometimes easier to just grab a seat and wait for morning.
