How is your distant view like?

Post » Tue Dec 06, 2011 7:26 pm

I have all maxed out m I can't select any further higher setting on the card all runs smooth but the distant view is quite crap .... especially the azurine sea , that shoudl instead be quite dark ..., edged terrain like spiky ground , no texture on the ground or details of any kind apart some obvious lod trees...

Are you sure all sliders in the settings are moved to max? The first screenshot doesn't look like it has.

Though for the second screenshot I think it's normal.

edit, got a screenshot from the same place with all settings max. The graphics are just like that.

Thats not max. I get the same results when i put all the distance bars to half. And you can tweak the .ini file, if its still too short.

That biased poll made me realize how much you hate some things in this game. You seem to have some kind of personal grudge about this game.. All posts i have seen you are bigger = better.. and you seem to have some kind of obsession that skyrim should have crysis quality graphics. Try relaxing some times. I don't like that skyrim doesn't use dx11 and textures are copy pasted from morrowind, but it's not that horrible.

First of all, if you are seriously interested in our experience, don't make such a biased poll. I am not 'fine with no detail', but just yesterday I was mesmerizing the far away-look of this game beats anything I've seen in my life.

Having said that, judging by your screenshot you are talking more about mid-range actually. And what is happening with those land parts in the water in your top screenshot is indeed pretty awful. You see polygons, not land. The bottom part is not that bad, I think.

I have Skyrim on x-box 360, used to play TES on PC but I decided to go another route this time. So I can only talk from my experience there. And that experience is that if I look at all the individual graphics 'parts', it might not be that great (e.g. texture detail or shadows), but the overall picture is pretty d*mn impressive! And on console, I find it very easy to just enjoy that pretty overall picture. On PC, with that top screenshot, I'd probably be disappointed as well.

Most of the time, the distant view looks great, but it's not the *huge* step from Oblivion I was expecting. Much of the improvement is because they use puffs of cloud or fog or whatever to hide the blurry distant scenery.

The area where that shot is taken is one of the worst though (it looks the same here, even with maxed settings). Usually it looks quite good, especially in the mountains.

That doesn't look like max to me either. I actually think that draw distance, npc faces and weather conditions are the only things that this game does better than its predecessor.

sp your distant view on the xbox looks better than this picture?

I have all settings at max and this is what it looks like ...

I am wondering if can other people please send some pictures of this very sameplace in very same day time and show me their settings?

You're going to get bits of mid-distance terrain where it doesn't look so good. The distant LOD meshes are made and generated to a certain polygon count. Usually from afar, coupled with the new blurring and fog shader makes distant land look stunning. However if you're too close for fog to take effect (like you are in that screenshot), and just close in general, you will see polygons. The engine seems to have trouble with LOD and water, Oblivion and Fallout 3 were the same.

In the SkyrimPrefs.ini

Change the tree and grass draw distances to about 300000.0000 for tree's and 25000.0000 for grass.

Also enable shadows for grass and landscape by changing the values from 0 to 1

See what that does

I was forced to run the game on a lower resolution due to bad performance and it looks like someone puked on my screen.

There's nothing wrong with your game, it's just that this is one of the worst locations for distant scenery. There was a similar area in Oblivion near the waterfront district. The LOD system isn't perfect.

Here's roughly the same area on my system:
http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/841/screenshot2sn.jpg/

I'm running everything maxed out except shadows, which are at High. I've also added bTreesReceiveShadows=1 and bDrawLandShadows=1 to the ini, which improves the scenery near you, but does nothing for distant scenery. If you have a high-end system, there are some tweaks you can apply to improve distance scenery further, but this is the way the game looks for everyone out of the box.

I tried to get some screenshots and found the distant graphics in some scenes is just not that good. Probably have to restort to tweaking .ini some time.

Shouldn't object detail fade be off?

Unless I have no idea what that means.

I fail to see big difference between medium settings+FXAA and ultra settings worth losing fps.

Well depend on what you are talking about, talking about landscape and suchs? Or just npcs and objects?? You can change them depend on your video settings and i got mine on HIGH and look great from distance. Try increase the actors by 1/2 or all the way and it might slow down your pc if you have it maxed.

Not that I can think of. I did that on mine and it improved the visuals. Not by massive amounts but enough that it is noticeable....

This thread may offer some tips for you to try: It's been locked due to post limit but the info is pretty good

I have done some experiments and it seems to me that varying the grass distance from 7 k to 25 k offers something buit beyond I see no change ...

anyway the terrain lods still svck and there is no ini I can find to increase the detail by distance ... also the texturing is retty much odd ...
I wish they had really remade the engine like cryengine ...
