Even if he had said the opposite, what's wrong with making an RPG playable? Improving design elements isn't bad. Both statements are true, anyhow. As technical capabilities go up more and more RPG elements that were traditional handled by invisible statistics can also be tied to gameplay, such as Oblivion's lockpicking, and the new jobs and crafting methods for Skyrim.
I'm certainly not complaining, even though I auto picked those locks every single time.
