GI Hub Update, UI #2

If Attributes are gone, this perk system better be amazing and make up for lost ground.

Also I'm slightly worried about the loss of hotkeys, Am I going to have to go to a mini-menu everytime I want a new spell?

Yeah, that's it really its just a nice way of displaying the 3 skill categories, birthsigns are still there "Though Skyrim abandons the class structure in favor of a "you are what you play" philosophy, Bethesda is preserving the player’s ties to star signs."

This overly simplified star sign stuff is pretty lame. I always liked all the different signs you could choose from to be born under.

Now we just have this generic fantasy trope of warrior, thief, mage. It's takes away a lot of customization.

I don't see why they wouldn't do what every game does with an exploration map: gray out (or make it appear generic) the areas that you haven't explored.

Its not like you're going to go to your map and scout a mile ahead to see if there's any dragons flying around or something. Crap guys, think about these things.

It's a personal preference (and a rare one, clearly) that the largest enjoyment I can get out of a game comes from exploring the world and finding vistas and nature that I couldn't otherwise have. I'll explore into the deep wilderness to find, essentially, visual loot. Now that (it appears to say) I can do this without leaving the starting dungeon, I feel like a lot of the exploration (and reason to play the game) has been removed. I'd MUCH prefer to have a nice ink on parchment map that would tell me landmarks and mountain locations, rather than being in a ridiculous space telescope (which they claim is better immersion).

Strength = your chosen melee skill for damage, Stamina to affect encumberance

I don't think it makes much sense to tie stamina to encumbrance. It's probably best to leave it to multiple perk levels.

Can you make a set of things as a favorite? Like an armor set? Or do I have to mark each individual piece as a "favorite". If so then the favorites menu is going to be very, very long.

So the skill menu always shows a night sky? And I think I like this favorites thing now. I press up on dpad and it brings me to a favorites screen that's alphabetical? I can go into the inventory and mark anything as a favorite?

well yeah you can add everything into your favourites menu, but im sure a key or something would not be your favourite.

Well yeah you can put say, your full steel set into your menu, but if you are already wearing it there is no need. You can put anything you want inside of that menu, just like you can put anything into your favourites tab on your computer.

Not 3 birth signs.. 3 skill sets. As far as I gathered.

The nebulae represent the three archetypes Warrior, Mage And Rogue (Thief). If you read a book in-game (in either Morrowind or Oblivion) called "The Firmament", it says the are three constellations with the same names that are classified as the primary constellations. Each of them has a "charge" of three other constellations that they protect from the "Serpent" constellation that wanders the sky without a set course. The Warrior protects The Lady, The Lord and The Steed. The Mage protects The Apprentice, The Atronach and The Ritual. And The Thief protects The Lover, The Tower and The Shadow. It looks as though these three constellations will now be nebulae in Skyrim instead and there will be more than three constellations in each "charge". Progress in astronomy over the last 200 years?

In a past update it said you can change load outs. You can assign any grouping of items to a single loadout.

Actually, the way I saw it was that, if you have less than 10 items favorited, sure, you will be at a disadvantage. But once you get more than 10, that's what hot keys can't do for you. I think it will be far easier to hit a button, scroll up/down, then press the thing I need. That's better than juggling hotkeys.

That isn't so say that they couldn't have both. In fact, they didn't even mention what the other directions did, I believe.

We're talking about two different things. They didn't even mention what PC button we'll have to push to get to the favorites menus since PC's unfortunately lack a D-Pad (and having to use the arrow keys for that purpose would be too awkward).

I'm talking about the Map/Quest/Inventory/Magic/Skills UI screens. All of which will apparently be a pain to navigate. My only hope is that since the article completely failed to mention PC at all, in any way, that means they're planning something else for it (please please please).

It's not about pressing "one more button". It's about having to navigate an endless series of clunky UI screens just to find one piece of information. It's about having to find my way to the map screen in order to check on quests. It's about having to navigate through "nebulae" to see all my skills.

In Morrowind all you do is right-click and all the relevant information you could ever need for your character is presented in a single screen. No fuss, no muss. With the exception of the journal which could be accessed by pressing...get ready for it..."J".

So this boils down to Morrowind once again... First of all, you have no idea if it's clunky or not. Secondly, I found Morrowind's menu no better than Oblivion's. Morrowind's had everyone on one screen, sure, but then I had to search for the item I needed. In Oblivion, it had nice, well organized tabs that sure, all the items weren't on one screen but you could find the items you needed much faster if you had a ton of items in your inventory than you could in Morrowind.

I cant believe I've gone through this WHOLE thread without someone mentioning this. Maybe we should actually TEST IT OURSELVES before judging through someone elses words?? We've seen one picture and they described what its like to us, but I think until we actually get our hands on the game and give it a try ourselves its unfair to say it svcks, as many people seem to be implying.

Edit: and I agree with Sleigns post above, Morrowinds was almost no better than Oblivions, the only difference to me was that I could change the size of the menus....

People, your development will not affect the actual sky. Don't be silly. It's pretty obvious it affects only how the sky will look in your menu. You don't look at the actual sky in that UI, that would be impossible, 'cos if so you would be able to see your skill development only when it's cloudless night and outside.

Did you EVEN READ THE THREAD?

These signs have ALWAYS BEEN ARRANGED LIKE THIS. ALWAYS.

http://www.imperial-library.info/content/morrowind-firmament
The Stars of Tamriel are divided into thirteen constellations. Three of them are the major constellations, known as the Guardians. These are the Warrior, the Mage, and the Thief. Each of the Guardians protects its three Charges from the thirteenth constellation, the Serpent.

The Warrior, Thief, and Mage have ALWAYS been over the other star signs. This is not something new. This isn't lame. This isn't dumbed down. In fact, its one of the most lore accurate things I've ever seen Bethesda implement as a minor game feature.

perhaps i didnt read the "favorite" thing correct but it sounds like a step back... so instead of a hotkey you have to hit a button to get a "menu" to show up that has the Favorited items i put there but dont get to choose in which order they appear in said menu. then i have to scroll through my favorited items and hit a button to make that change. and in the guys own words (reading between them more like it) he says it is a better system then hotkeys IF you use more than 8 things but less then undisclosed amount.... im confused

I think it's a bad idea to order your items and spells alphabetically in the favorites menu. It should be done in the order you choose, so that way you can quickly select the things that are most important to you instead of having to scroll back and forth to each item and spell in alphabetical order.

For goodness sake It says so in the article, "Bethesda is preserving the player’s ties to star signs." direct quote. If you read the post someone made about the firement you will see what the three star nebulae means...

I don't understand. You wouldn't be able to do any pre-emptive exploring with what I suggested. At all.

I would rather they allow it to be toggled between types (order by spells, armor, weapons, etc), alphabetically, maybe by most often used (So that the most often used stuff would appear first, and the least often last), etc.

I'll have to wait and see the UI in action. I can't really comment from just a description. Also, I wonder how it will work on the PC.

It doesn't sound very promising. I hope I'm wrong. I just want a simple UI ala Morrowind (but improved, the ability to sort stuff) which is resizeable - at least on the PC.

It will be if the constellations only show up once you pick the relevant perks :P
Last time I checked Ursa Major didn't show up only for those who'd become accomplished sword-fighters :P

That's why I said "might" because I really don't think the menu will have anything to do with the sky myself. It could but I'm just thinking this is a misinterpretation based on GI trying to find a way to convey the game menu.
