GI Hub Update, UI #2

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 11:42 am

I've already described how Skyrim's quick menu can still be superior to a 1-0 hotkey grouping.

As for "being able to see anything durrp hurrp" (not saying you can see everything, but making a point):
The map that came with Morrowind (the paper map) actually allows you to see every dungeon (that can be access from the outside) on it. It even has little caves where the mines and caves are.

Just take a look at it.

Wrong quote I think? :P

I find these interface complaints moot, it's just laziness to not want to make two clicks that will take, what, 1 second? I'd rather have high res textures, dx11 capabilities and amazing tesselation then have one less click.... Not to mention it seems it will have the organization of the Oblivion menu so hurray, much better than the scrambled inventory of Morrowind.

The entire point of a menu is to get information. Anything that makes that information more difficult to get is simply poor design. Asking for it to be simpler is not being lazy. It's asking for a more efficient, better designed menu system.

So this boils down to Morrowind once again... First of all, you have no idea if it's clunky or not. Secondly, I found Morrowind's menu no better than Oblivion's. Morrowind's had everyone on one screen, sure, but then I had to search for the item I needed. In Oblivion, it had nice, well organized tabs that sure, all the items weren't on one screen but you could find the items you needed much faster if you had a ton of items in your inventory than you could in Morrowind.

I think both had their pros and cons, Oblivions inventory was more beginner friendly, morrowinds was lik a smack in the face first time you opened it. Then after you had played a while morrowinds menu became easy and simple to use, everything was where you wanted it, oblivions inventory became more and more of a chore as you were playing, navigating through the tabs and lists.

So therefore in the end I prefer Morrowinds.

So is the menu mapped under one button and then from there is a four way compass? Map, skills, inventory, spells, favorites is five things there are only four directions...

I would say that the problem with Oblivion's interface was the GIANT font. In any other way, it was bettr than Morrowind's one.

I think this referred to the PC version, where Morrowind is clearly better, with everything neatly fitting onto a single screen. The Box version was utter crud, that I agree with.

It sure sounds like this. As I said, this is all fuzzy and glorious talk about what is actually just a fantasy Pip-Boy 3000.

Did you see a map in that article? I didn't. All I saw was a rather poorly worded single paragraph. They almost never mention the LIMITS of something in an article, only what it can do (and even then they leave out many details). So you can look around at all the crap? Is it all crap? Crap that you've seen before? They never said, and to take the worst out of it is to simply be a narcissist. Now I never said its going to be great, but I'm bloody [censored] tired of people screaming bloody murder at every shred of information we get. Try thinking CRITICALLY and IN CONTEXT. Are they GOING TO LET YOU SEE THE WHOLE WORLD FROM THE GET GO? Have you EVER PLAYED A GAME THAT LET YOU?

This is all about expectations, and while I do not expect some life changing UI experience, I do not expect stupidity of the level of what you're describing, especially considering I have literally never seen any game that allowed you to do something that gamebreakingly stupid.

Sorry, I suppose I over reacted. It just pushed me passed the final breaking point of what I'm willing to look passed in a game (especially since exploration is the thing I look forward to most in the game, so anything that threatens it immediately angers me) that I jumped to the conclusion, however, while the paragraph may be poorly worded, it would be ridiculous to assume so. Going strictly from the article, we can view mountain peaks, rivers and tundras simply from the map. So how about you calm down and explain to me why they wouldn't do it and how it would be game breaking. Keep in mind, I'm not talking about zooming in to see flowers on the ground, but far enough in that you can see the exact terrain of the land so that no physical barrier will surprise you.

Well it looks to me like Bethesda is going for an ethereal look with the UI. Which makes sense considering you are a Dragonborn.

Wrong quote I think? :P

No, the first sentence was directed towards you. The second to a general audience.

People are making some disgusting presumptions here. In addition, not a single person cried like this when the magazine was first released, and this is almost the exact same part of that article.

Now, I'm not telling you that you can't be displeased or be pessimistic, but there is just a limit and I think several people grabbed their flamethrowers too fast in this thread.

As for no physical barrier surprising you:

- It wasn't a bias towards the console community. Chances are BGS hasn't got around to programming the game for the PC yet. They start the programming for the consoles first as it is easier to port over to the PC using the console development tools then the other way around. So, the reason they didn't talk about the PC version is most likely because they don't have the PC version of controls made yet. So please don't turn this into a PC vs Console war when it has nothing to do with either community...

- Even if it's not, it will still be good. Oblivion's menu was an improvement over Morrowind's imo because you actually had your menu organized and it didn't bother me to hit the tab that the item is under because it is sort've ridiculous to complain about having to select a tab. It's faster than having to sort through your hundreds of items in the main menu if it's all on one screen.

It has everything to do with them. To change the menu (that doesn't need changing really), it would have to be reprogrammed and I would rather have them working on other features for the PC then changing a perfectly good menu setup. As for the comment about how I loved everything Oblivion did, I don't love everything Oblivion did but it was a great game that had many improvements over the "godly" Morrowind and people complain about features of Oblivion that had nothing wrong with them either because they are just too lazy to be bothered to click two buttons when in reality it's faster than hitting the one button and searching a huge page crammed with items, or they complain about features just because they are different than Morrowind. It's not like I'm some Oblivion fan boi, in fact my favorite TES game is Daggerfall, but I'll defend a game when it has no reason to be condemned.

Just for some clarification, this is not my opinion of the systems in Skyrim. This is the opinions of others. I'm actually perfectly fine with the changes BGS is making, if you actually read the bottom of my post... You are probably right about it not being programmed for PC yet, but that still doesn't change the fact that people will complain none the less. Regardless of what BGS does, it will always turn into a PC vs Console war. You should know that by now.

Um... I have some questions after that article.
Will there be a screen we can look at our character from different angles ?
Will there be a screen for general statistics ? e.g.(horses stolen, maximum bounty etc)
Are we going to move around the menus by pressing (A) or (D) ?

Does the fact that we will cary 2 weapons on our hands (left-right) mean that each hand will be assigned to each mouse button ?
If so does that mean that we will have to right click to swing our sword except if we play a left handed character ?

I have - Black & White. It's technically an RTS, and you can see everything on the map from the get-go.

As for the map UI - you people are really, really, reaaaalllly overreacting. What the article meant is that you can now see the things you saw on a 2D map in 3D, i.e. turn the view around while you're looking at the map. The best example if you want a demo of this is Google Earth where some cities are done the same way so that you can see the topography of buildings. My guess is once you go into the map UI the camera will zoom out by a large distance and you won't be able to zoom in any further beyond it. If you try, you leave the menu and "snap back to reality". There will also be a limit to the angle of the camera, so the only things you will be able to discern are geographical features such as mountain passes, the locations of big waterfalls and frozen lakes. That's it.

Yes, in Morrowind everything fitted in one screen... but for me, it was kinda chaotic. I preferred Oblivion's one. Although due to the giant font, I used DarN.

Listen, all I am saying is that whilst I am still excited about this release big time, I am worried that some of the things I am reading about, i.e. amazing graphics, dynamic snow, stars in the sky lighting up, finishing moves etc, I really could not give two hoots about!

I want the levelling sorted, especially the disgrace that was levelled unique items, I want fast travel overhauled, I want the return of tresuries so I can plan huge bank jobs, and I want an end to generic dungeons with their rubbish levelled loot. These are big ticket items for me!

What your saying is that because you can see the The Great Wall of China from Google Earth, then you have no incentive to go there and see it. I cannot compute that.

I don't like the skill bars design.

The skill bars design gives me flashbacks to master of orion 3.... I think each skill should have a bit of arora in it and as your skills climb you start to see larger and more vivid aruras in the night sky.

So, when does this GI exclusivity end? They svck at it, especially at writing. This update was by far the most uninspired and should have been earlier in the scheme. It's anti climactic to say the least.

I think it's funny, people have lived in Skyrim for +5000 years yet they have no map clearly depicting every cave and town in the region.

Though I didn't read anything that said every location is clearly viewable from game start. Though like someone mentioned Morrowind's paper map showed you where locations were. It didn't hinder exploration, it motivated it. If I know there is two caves, rather than one, on particular paths I'll take the one with two.

People are just finding something to complain about for the sake of complaining (most will still buy the game regardless of what they are saying on the forums). Not a big surprise. We will see this until the game finally releases on Armistice Day. I just can't wait to see the first in-game footage of Skyrim!

Can you please edit into the OP that they are not getting rid of all birthsigns but 3. It clearly states in the article there are 3 nebulae and each nebulae has multiple constellations in it...

There are only 3 birthsigns, the nebulae contain perks for the associated warrior, mage or thief set of skills, nothing like any of the other birthsigns present in previous chapters.
