Huge Mod Project

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 1:58 pm

I recently started sketching the concept art for the races and characters for the mod; laying out the basic storyline etc. I really want to make something that will "hit" the players with amazing voice acting and a well developed story, characters, and emotions throughout. The story will begin in the vanilla mainland, however the player will be taken to a new land (whether it be abducted, enslaved, kidnapped, invited, or SOS'd i haven't decided yet.) If you want more information you can send me a message on the forums.

However, since there has been news of a new elder scrolls coming out, I had an idea for this mod to be intended for TESV, giving more time to develop all characters, story-lines, concept art, etc.. anything that doesn't need the construction set. I think it would also be much more enjoyable if the entire mod was voice acted, for more immersion and professionalism. As of yet I have the basic outline for the story, several races etc however nothing is set in stone, so if you have ideas or would like to take part in some way then feel free to ask!

Just so you realise, there is no hard evidence that an ES game will be released anytime in the next 3 years, only speculation.

EDIT: and your poll asks if it shuold be made for Morrowind, Oblivion or the next game, but only gives us a Yes/No choice.

Would be difficult, if not impossible to effectively plan a modification for a nonexistent game. You have no idea what limitations will be presented to you as the designer, whether TESV will be a single player game, or an MMO, or where it will take place in the time and space of ES lore, you don't even know if they will release a CS for it to allow modifications.

If you want to do a mod, it's better to mod for a game you know something about, one where you can readily learn the skills you need to create it and can predict from the experiences of others what you will need to do to make your vision a reality. :foodndrink:

If I could, i'd vote Oblivion... Mainly because I don't have Morrowind and i'd love to see this released.

It's a hard task though - would you be doing it alone, or getting a team together?

I would love to get a good team together. I'm decent at voice acting and modding, but my real strengths are in writing

I really want to stress that all modding as of yet has been made in notebooks, everything can later be made computerized in a decent amount of time, if we have all of our ideas and plans laid out, designed, and confirmed, all the more complicated work will be done. just some meshing, textures, and construction set work will need to be made

As said above, we know nothing of Tes5 yet, whether it will even come into existance...

Though I hope that's not true, if it ever does come into existance.

I think it's just speculation.

I am pretty sure that was just a rumor, it would be a huge mistake for TESV to be mmo

if after we/i have done all pre-cs work and there is still no news of a TESV then it can be released for oblivion or even modified for fallout, or both

Yeah. Speculation right now. But a while back I heard on a PC Gamer Podcast that we shouldn't expect a game anytime soon. But he never said that we shouldn't expect one at all.

I think Bethesda Game Studios is working a Fallout New Vegas right now.

No, they are only publishing....like alot of games they put thier name to.

At the moment Bethesda Softwork has no annonced games in development. But from the interview they post, we know that they are making a game.

I'd vote for Oblivion. Also, maybe you guys are getting a little off topic? Elliot, can you tell us more about your idea?

Um, wow.

You go talk to the makers of the Underdark about the "just" part involved in that.

Oh, they are only publishing it. Yeah, according to Wikipedia Obsidian is developing it. PC Gamer was wrong. They said Bethesda Game Studios was developing it.

umm quick question, does anyone who is making this have alot of CS experience? cause making something big doest take a decent amount of time, no matter how much planning it has.

Reclaiming Sancre Tor was planned out on paper by DarkRider before he ever touched the CS, yet is has been in building for 2 years. The fact is, placing stuff into the CS is easy...but you have to place a lot of stuff...then you have AI and dialogue and it all takes a decent amount of time, and even longer if you are new to the CS (considering your join date I cant be sure how much you've used the CS).

Good luck to you, its entirely possible to do this.

Sadly, this may turn out to be nothing but a dream. Ask Iliana for tips on how to make a giant mod.

By decent amount of time I meant decent compared to without any pre-planning. Less things to sort out and worry about

*I. Beginning *(just a "place holder" for now. Everything can be made more complex and intresting later on)*
*

* The player is met by a fearful looking messenger. He is told that
an estate has been left in his name. He goes to investigate, but
is ambushed by a group of cloaked bandits. He is knocked unconscious.
* The player wakes up a few hours later, he seems to be on a boat.
Strange looking creatures (soon to be found out by the player are
forest trolls) Huddled around him searching through his clothes.
The player observes them to be ordered by an overseer, he seemed
to have a more superior aura than the others - giving them orders,
disciplining the lazy. Dead, scavenged bodies lay piled in one
corner, chained, beaten, and bloody, several slaves huddled in the
other. Right away the player realizes that this was all a hoax,
perhaps practice many times before.
* The overseer orders the played to be chained with the others. As
his henchmen begin to chain him up, the overseer tells them to
stop immediately. The overseer walks closer, with a curious look
in his eyes, pointing right at the player. With a dreaded but
perplexed tone, he shudders. "Wait. What is that?"
* The player's vision goes hazy, to black, to nothingness. He wakes
up again, chained, being led by the Overseers henchmen, with him,
the overseer (or slaver) in the front. The scenery around him is
filled with smoke. People bloodied and battle worn - walk around
him, noticing nothing but the wherever they are going to. He is in
a village apparently, perhaps under attack, or siege, or
oppression by some unknown hierarchy. The leading group takes you
(the player) to a hut, larger than the others you have seen. The
overseer pulls back the curtain door, saying "Get in. He wants to
see you."

That's all I have for now. If you see fit to add anything, please, be my guest :)

Hey Elliot,

I've been reading through this topic, and I have to admit im a bit skeptical of your idea.

First, I'm not quite sure you understand the cs that well. The introduction you have planned would be very hard to script and execute. In reality, it sounds more liek a movie than a game.

Next, I'm not sure if you understand the massive planning and execution a big mod like this takes. Da Mage is very right when he pointed out that these mods could take years.

Finally, might I suggest giving the community more background info before assembling a team? I don't think anyone quite knows what's going on here.

But, all that said, if you want to do your mod, by all means do it. It's not my place to stop you.

Good luck,

kroot

Actually, you're right. this entire scene can be made into a cutscene (which can be occur after the player goes to sleep through scripts, i've seen it done before.)

The cutscene can be designed comic-book-style, with voice overs and ambience to give it more life. So you see, the only real work will be drawing the scenes. The movie will be scenes dipicted by a the drawing, and a narrator. The rest of the mod will not be so intricate and far fetched

actually comic book style would be very cool in a mod, and much easier to achieve. i'dike to see that. :)
