Huge problem with Bethesda

Post » Tue Jul 06, 2010 8:28 pm

Why can't Bethesda make robust games, games in which you don't have to constantly worry and wonder about every single thing being bugged in some way?

Have you seen the wiki for both Fallout 3 and New Vegas for each entry, the amount of bugs is simply astonishing. :banghead:

Bethesda really needs to fundamentally redesign their game making process.

EDIT(clarification):

Actually I was not talking about crashes and such at all, they happen in every game and very rarely, even in FNV.

I was talking about bugs on weapon/perk miscalculation(laser rifle beam splitter for example is bugged that way), quests if they are approached differently etc.
For example I was just at Cottonwood Cove, killed everyone but later met Astor who gave me the quest to kill everyone, so the only way to finish the quest was to go to console and resurrect a Legionnaire :brokencomputer: and kill him..
What is especially weird about this is that going to Cottonwood Cove before meeting Astor is far far more likely than the other way around...

I am talking about systematic robust approach to game design where features are designed in such a way to prevent such miscalculations inherently by its design so that manual adjustment is not needed.

Well, they have a new engine for Skyrim, so maybe it'll get better. Or worse :hehe:

While they did push out the game too soon it is hard to cover the amount of bugs in a game this big.
Maybe we're being spoiled by Bethesda games and so it seems like no biggie but come on, how many games are as expansive as Bethesda's games?
It's bound to be a bugged mess, at least they're still doing patches for us.

(Before anyone whines about it: I Know Obsidian developed the game and that Bethesda was the publisher who did the QA.)

Obsidian Entertainment made Fallout New Vegas, not Bethesda Game Studios.

Bethesda did the QA and forced the game out the door too soon.
They could've delayed it 2 or 4 months to really polish it up, but they didn't.

Its a big game with alot of scripts and open world.

If you want something smooth play a linear style game.

I totally agree that a delay for more QA would have been desirable, but let's not let Obsidian off the hook entirely. It was their choice to sign a contract specifying a delivery date. It was also their programming that was so eccentric it foiled the QA staff at Bethesda.
Honestly, both companies knew there was going to be trouble -- they had a patch ready the next day.

It would be unprofessional for Bethesda and Obsidian to air their dirty laundry, but I'm willing to bet that there have been some pretty tense moments in the halls since October. In the eyes of the general public, this was a Bethesda game, and big ol' companies don't like negative publicity. Luckily for us, Obsidian is a conscientious company and is doing it's best to fix things. Did you guys know that Sawyer made the gun mods on his own time, unpaid?

Let's hope that both companies come out ahead; they are full of great people, I love their games and I wish them well.

Its a huge open world game unlike CoD, so there is bound to me more places where it screws up because it is ten to fifteen times bigger.

I would gladly sacrifice size and complexity for stability.

Wow, way to lower your standards and in the process the standards for developers...

Open world games can be made less buggy if the mechanisms of designing them are smart.

Guys, you need to remember how old the Gamebryo engine is. It's been stretched to the limits of its workability since Oblivion. Let's be glad Obsidian is putting out patches for the major bugs, hating on Bethesda for allowing them to make the game and use the engine isn't going to help anything.

This. Gamebryo is a buggy mess, the source of the majority of bugs in both games, but, thankfully, it is reaching retirement.

But they will still use it for Skyrim.

Also even if Skyrim will somehow be better it won't have guns, lasers and slow-mo dismemberment..

Skyrim gets a new engine, and propably a modified version of it will be used for Fallout 4. But that's propably 2-4 years in the future

That's not entirely true. I'm a salaried employee and a lot of people on the team put a lot of time into each patch. The only reason I specify that I made the balance tweaks on my own time is to defuse the argument that the balance tweaks were done instead of other fixes. The primary focus of Bethesda QA and Obsidian programmers/designers for the last patch was stability and performance. Some of these changes were big, some small, but they were part of a big picture approach to making the game more reliable. When you notice little things, like the number of Powder Gangers in an area going down, or a wall being shifted in Freeside, that's being done to manage memory in the area. They seem like little things, but trust me, they are part of an extremely time-consuming and frustrating process to make the game more stable and run better. I have it relatively easy. I am The Weapon Tuner. I can come in early, stay late, or spend a few hours on the weekend tuning weapons on my own. Iteration is very fast for me. Doing memory soak tests on Primm or Camp Forlorn Hope -- that is not fun stuff. The primary people working on the last patch all put much more time into the patch than I did, so don't view my balance changes as some noble effort among shiftless layabouts. I made the changes on my own time specifically to stay out of their way while they were making more substantive "do not crash/run at 10fps" fixes.

Can't. That damn wasteland wonderglue is some pretty ferocious stuff. Get yourself a new one and see if you can find the other mods you do like for it and repair it with the one you don't like.

What, you got paid for that? That's it. I'm demoting you from unadvlterated Idol status to only revered. :hubbahubba:

Honestly, I'm still playing the PS3 version, base game, Pre-Patches. I seldom run across issues, my worst issues are freeze ups after playing for 4 hours plus. So honestly, either I'm very lucky or people just dont want to admit they play long stiks like I do.

This is what happens to me on the X-box, I've never really had any Issues except the game freezing after playing it for a very long time. The only other glitch or problem I had was when I modded the Weathered 10mm pistol and that was really early in the games release.

I could be wrong, but if memory serves, the reason for the Weathered 10mm issue was a unique pistol, and I guess they forgot/didnt expect anyone to mod it, so it only had one skin, and if I recall correctly, each mod replaces the gun with a new gun bearing the combination of mods on it. I got that same issue when I got the Toirtiseshell glasses from that guy in Vault 19 and dropped them to put them on a table, I was not happy I had to reload the save to put it in a chest.

I've only like 1 corrupted save on New Vegas so far, but some days the game can get nasty and crash every 20 minutes, or everything can get bogged down to the point it takes 5 minutes to access a new area( fast travel, doors etc.)

I would LAUGH if somebody made a mod for Doc Mitchell to say "Bugs" and one of the replies being New Vegas. I can't wait for this engine to be retired.

Does anyone know if Skyrim will have physics as much as the ancient Half Life 2, Fallouts pretty much just have ragdoll physics.

It is so sad to see that games have less physics as time goes by compared to Half Life 2, crappy consoles really halt progress.
