Hunting and Gathering

Post » Wed Nov 25, 2009 8:28 pm

I was recently playing Monster Hunter on the old PS2 and was thinking about something. In The New Elder Scrolls installment I believe there should be options to carve animals, and use them for weapons, food, armor, etc. I believe if say you kill a Bear you could carve that bear. Maybe get a pelt out of it, after a few pelts you could make some pauldrons, a cuirass, and maybe a helmet out of it. After collecting some of the bears bones you could create maybe a Claymore our of them. The meat you harvest from the creatures you could either eat for maybe some health or sell to a local market. Also possibly the option to create a campfire and cook your meat to add extra flavor and maybe health. Possibly make a buisness, and hunt for money. Collection bones, pelts, etc and selling them to blacksmiths and such. Also I would like each creature to be differant I dont want all my bears the same size. One day maybe I shoot a good size Brown Bear. I carve it and sell its goods to market. But maybe another day you see a Brown Bear of Legend, massive and talked off by local NPC's. Instead of selling it, you could mount its full body or just the head. Create an awsome set of armor out of it. I would like the NPC's to be more, say unique. Instead of just talking about "Emperors Death" maybe talk more of local lore and legends (More than in Oblivion). You could make a living out of hunting , get a Cabin in the woods and live your life like that. Or maybe be a lore hunter. Going after every legendary creature you here of, did i here Yeti? Well lets go to that cave and bag it. Also give the willdlife more of a personality instead of just randomly running through the woods. Make the deer rome in herds. wolves in packs, and maybe a mother bear with its cubs. Also to fish in the lakes and rivers, not just fish make specific species. For example Bluegill, Pike, Bass, etc... Or if you want more options, purchase or steal a conoe and travel that way. Just an idea anything to add let me know..

If you could harvest hide and bone for weapons/items crafting or selling I think it'd be a worthy addition to the game, definitely.

Definite yes, if it goes hand in hand with crafting, or things mentioned in earlier posts.
I would still say yes even if it didn't, but I feel the novelty of it would wear off after a while..

since you want a kinda realit the only things you could make with bone would be small things.. like arrow heads spear tips maybe a dagger or club [ I can tell you from experence i actually hunt and gather]

id like to be able to have small "farm" gardens outside a cabin to it would help for emersion since i play as a ranger type character

I could see that as sort of an expansion of what we had in Tribunal and Bloodmoon. That's not bad. I just don't think I'd want to have to hunt rabbits and all that just for food. The simulation part of it would take up my entire day, if I had to sleep every day, and eat every day, and poop in the river or whatever. Make it optional, I guess is what I'm trying to say.

I like multi-faceted ways to progress.

I think it would be a cool idea.

As in you are wearing the skull on your head? Are you aware that dragon heads (atleast the dragons in the trailer) are like 5x bigger than a humans whole body?

That would give a new use to repair, that's for sure. (Smithing?)

I have gone on hunting expeditions in Oblivion for RP purposes, so having some real rewards would be interesting. So long as a crafting system is done well it could work.

Yeah in Oblivion all those pelt and monster parts were basically useless, some had alchemy purposes but what else? This would add importance to many clutter and "trash" items.

After greatly enjoying hardcoe mode+survivial skill in Fallout new vegas, I would be surprised and a little sad if they dont put stuff like that it here.It would be very interusting and fun I think.

This would be an essential skill for virtually any denizen of a place that has such a short growing season. Since there will never be an adequate period of time to grow ample crops, lots of hunting and gathering would be necessary. Perhaps there are high elevation lakes that have schools of fish prized for their oils, bones and meat, and you can catch these for both yourself and to sell to fishmongers.

Hunting is a real-life skill that would be fun to role-play. Obviously with bows rather than firearms it's even more difficult and one has to sit for long periods of time in utter silence near an area where game frequently travel hoping to get a nice close shot.

This poll is a resounding yes, so I hope Bethesda checks out if not for Skyrim but future projects.

I have hunted with a recurve bow for quite a few years. Your kinda on the head

Hunting is mainly about reading the land less about waiting
Setting up in the right area and coming in at the right spot is the biggest key. Honestly i have never shot large game after more than 5 hours in a stand

Bow hunting small game and foul is all about basically stepping on them and making a good shot

Sorry you guys can have all the tech if you need hunting/fishing/trapping or homebrewing i gotta chime in

I think hunting is a great idea. I tried roleplaying a hunter in Morrowind, and it was quite fun, although mods were needed to make it worthwhile.

Being able to craft items out of the items we can get from hunting would absolutely be awesome.

There already is carving and gathering in elder scrolls... you take things from monsters when they die, and you can gather from mushrooms and stuff. its done differently to monster hunter in a way that suits the elder scrolls games. I'm fine with it the way it is, however I like the idea of being able to forge armour with some of the items picked up.
