Hurray for Skyrim not being landlocked.

Post » Thu Aug 05, 2010 8:36 am

One of the things that i didn't like about Cyrodiil was the fact that it was completly landlocked, and even within the lake there was almost nothing to see. I hope Bethesda takes full advantage of this and adds many features under the water. The nords are a seafaring race so i would expect there to be a large amount of shipwrecks etc.

I didnt hear about this, but hurray if true. I like the idea of a coastline scattered with ruins and wreckage.

Skyrim has a coastline along its northern edge - presumably cold and icy. Shipwrecks are likely to have run into icebergs :)

Cyrodiil isn't completely landlocked, though... ever been to Anvil? There's still not much worth actually seeing in the game's seas, though, which I hope will change in Skyrim. With all the work Bethesda appears to be putting in making the land look good, it would be such a shame if the underwater areas in the game didn't get a portion of the same amount of attention.

Even just a couple of shipwrecks ( underwater, not on the shore this time ), and one or two underwater dungeons would be an enormous step in the right direction.

Pretty much. I think some good ol' shipwreck-plundering treasure-hunting would be awesome. Yarr.

I spent a lot of time diving with the re-breather in lake mead in Fallout new vegas. I found a few underwater dungeons, I was so happy :3

I do hope that cold affects you in this game, though. Swimming in an arctic oceans seems like a fundamentally bad idea for many reasons. If the water was freezing cold, you could limit your time in it, but there could be a lot of neat stuff among the sea floor. Rule of thumb for me is if an area is dangerous, then there's probably a lot of good [censored] to find in it, I'd come back when I find the means to dive in ice-cold water.

Definitely. I hope there are lots of little islands, sunken dungeons, etc along Skyrim's north/northeast coasts.

I missed the attention to detail in design with Morrowind. There was so much variation and so much to explore. And there was actually hidden loot!

exactly, make us look for it, makes us look like we accomplished something by making us search every inch of a cave for loot :spotted owl:

I agree, that's really great, plenty of mod potential as well, like islands and boats to other regions.

Yes! I miss the Morrowind type shipwrecks and it'd fit really well with Skyrims atmosphere in my opinion. Where else would I obtain Capn's guide to the fishy stick, Skyrim edition? Though I find swimming in games terrifying for some reason.

Probably not, Skyrim gets it cold weather because of it's height and the ocean level in Skyrim will not be higher up than cyrodiil, meaning the whole coast line will probably be almost completely ice and snow free, as seen in the gameplay trailer.

Yes I really hope to see various underwater creatures and underwater quests, shipwrecks, dungeons, etc. I always felt that water in the ES series was underdeveloped especially in Morrowind where there was so much Ocean.

There was still much more than Oblivion, but yeah more would be great.

Have you not seen the regions in the map?

The northern coast has snowy regions on all areas but Solitude and west of it, which is Pine Forest. Also, the snowy region has glaciers/ice around the edge.

To be fair, most of the land of Skyrim is, well, land. There's a large lake at the bottom though.

The Skyrim coastline probably won't be that much more icy than the northern Morrowind coastline, seeing as they're about the same latitude.

One thing I do miss about Morrowind was running along the ocean (after stupidly using a scroll of Icarian Flight) and looking at all the features on the ocean floor beneath me. Even as far out as I landed (FAR) I could see stuff on the bottom that looked like it was worth taking a peek at.

Too bad for me I was running full speed (water walk) to get back to the land.
