Ice and Ice Skates

Post » Fri Nov 26, 2010 12:41 am

In Bloodmoon (the 2nd Morrowind Expansion) you could walk over solid ice in Steel boots with absolutely no repercussions or negative effects. I think if you cross the ice you should slip and fall every so often or at least walk a lot slower. Unless of course you equip ice skates. Skates would make you actually faster on ice and you would never risk falling. Also, I think if it is an icy lake there should be a chance of the ice breaking and you falling through and freezing to death, it should be based on you weight of everything you carry, the more weight the more chance of ice cracking and breaking. I think there needs to be much improvement in the ice from Bloodmoon.
Anyone else like these ideas?

Immersible... immersible in annoying way tough (people like to walk around in their armors and won't like the idea of taking boots of every few minutes).
Since it adds little and will cause irritation in many people, I think it would be better for it not to be there.

Ice skates? No, don't see them fitting.

Ice shoes/cleats on the other hand. Those would work

I think it would be far too annoying, and if there were a chance of falling through the ice and die instantly I don't think anyone would walk on the ice.

Ice Skates have been around since the Dark Ages. I see no reason why the TES world would not have figured out how to invent them especially in Skyrim.

People were ice skating over 3000 years ago too! I think it would fit :)

Erm, but boots made for walking on ice are much better idea since I doubt that you can take a Nord with an axe and on skates seriously.

Only because something is historically accurate it doesn't mean that it would fit in TES.
Take guns for example.

Ever walked on frozen rivers or lakes? Unless there is the very, very rare occasion that there has been absolutely no snow and only continuous heavy cold, you are very hard pressed to fall down or even scate on frozen lakes and rivers.

I know what im talking about, about a hundred meters from me there is a very frozen river. You cant slip on it even if you try.

Yea I live in an area where its very cold with little precipitation. The lake on my campus is frozen a lot. And walking across it is impossible without falling even with my hiking boots which have good treads on. So imagine walking across is smooth steel combat boots.

I can see the benefit of having an area in the game where you might need to ski or skate and maybe even a quest to get the devices. However to make them something you have to carry around so you can cross frozen lakes or rivers makes no sense to me at all....

Just because something is possible, doesn't mean it should be done. There is no way that people would head out to battle but remember to bring their skates, just in case. Treads or some type of cleating on the bottom of armor would make much more sense. And the balancing on ice argument doesn't matter. Some people have better balance than others, and some surfaces freeze differently several times over a year. It could be slick one day and rough the next. I don't remember any time I have fallen on ice, and I have always been walking around on it in winter or skating on it. Besides everyone knows that there already are treads on the bottom of every pair of shoes in TES, you just can't see them because they are made up of false and imagination. :P

They should not be required, but you should have to move slower on ice if you do not have them especially if you are in smooth steel armor. I don't think steel boots should be able to sprint full speed over solid ice.

No slipping and sliding (you're a hero; you don't fall over).

But I would like to see thin ice cracking and breaking apart.

This. You can steer your car with your feet but that doesn't make it a good idea.

lots of heroes fall over when running over ice. Its usually a suspense device in chase scenes.
