i enjoy baldurs gate but, icewind dale by blackisle studios is a great game also, in my opinion better, champions of norath was also great.

The game could be made more like the dungeons and dragons book, take the scope of the game bigger, allow for more missions that revolve around timing. make a command style map, where you explore, and you can do things like find a goblin camp, make it a little more freestyle and less of a rollercoaster ride your forced to take part in.

allow for blacksmiths to be hired, trained or addable to your party. they make you weapons and objects, requiring metal and wood. they can melt old weapons and equipment down to build new items. Have the gems apply towards weapon bonuses, which was a nice addition to the newer dungeons and dragons games.

Add in new missions, like equip the local garrison (at a spesified city) with certain amounts of certain equipment. Allowing you to play in different ways, you can have a more laid back approach and equip npc armies to fight battles for you. and do a more econmic way to play the game. You can sell services as a spy orginzation, or trackers and guides for armies. or have a cleric guild and run a hospital and battle field medics to repair npc armies of your choice.

Able to buy buildings or take over empty ones in conquered cities..

explore all races home areas, what this means is have a forest where there are multiple elf citys, the elfs will specialize in certain things, then have mines for the dwarfs, have a few human citys, have multiple orc and goblin camps, enter a tunnel and are comfronted with underworld creatures.

Most importantly have picking lawful good or chaotic evil mean something. if you pick good your on the good guys, pick evil your on evils side. allow for good and bad humans, along with good and bad in all other creatures, have some strictly good, and strictly evil like giants are good and bugbears are evil. then allow for some neutral areas, where rouges go and have a city in chaos where at day time its mostly good, and at night time your going to be running for your life.

When entering citys have a chance where people will pick pocket you, allow for some polotics where you can buy off a leader of a town/city and do some out of character things.
