[WiPz] Icon Replacer

Post » Fri May 13, 2011 9:00 pm

So... so I was working on finally releasing another mod, but now I've got myself side-tracked into updating ALL the icons for inventory items after re-doing some ring icons, and noticing that my new icons looks waaaaay better than the vanilla stuff.

I'm making sure that they take up as much room as possible so that you can see your stuff in your inventory. I also make sure the color and brightness/contrast is accurate. So far, all my stuff looks much better than their vanilla counterparts. Paint.NET seems to be much superior for small-res quality than whatever bethesda used. I'm also opening up the meshes in Nifskope, not the CS.

I though this would be easy, but sometimes I run into a few items that are tricky to fit, like pauldrons and boots. For cuirasses, I'm only including the chest and belt - no lower stuff - so that you can really see it, you know?

I plan on doing this for Morrowind, Tribunal, and Bloodmoon.

Is anyone actually interested in this? I'm sort of doing it because I'm bored, and I want to take a break from some of my other projects.

They are looking great so far! I think it's a very good idea to help MW feel even more updated.
And I congratulate you on your perseverance, I know how making a lot of icons can be slow tedious work.

Nice. I'd love to have better icons for everything. I did redo the skull icons in "Better Skulls" to match the better skulls of course.

This could be nice, I might be confused at first simply because I am SO familiar with the original ones. But I would be willing to give it a try and of course I think you should continue with this! They look good from what I can see.

They look good
I remember once trying to make icons with a higher resolution (64x64 I think), but they didnt work right ingame :/ I guess we are stuck with the low default resolution for icons (32x32?). In any case, I really think your icons are a significant improvement over the vanilla ones, good job so far :)

I would suggest making the background transparent (as it seems to be black right now). The black is fine if you use the default menus, but for those of us who use Dark UI... :D

They look nice, I′d use them. You must be pretty bored to do icons, but I can assure you they do indeed look better than the vanilla ones ;).

BTW: As Saint Jiub said, the background needs to be transparent (if it isn′t already).

An icon replacer? That's a first I think. Great work on them so far though, there much improved over the originals.

They are transparent .tga images at the moment. Irfanview replaces transparent backgrounds with black. I've been making icons for the past several days for another mod and I've tested them in-game. I'm not so newbish that I can't do transparencies, you know.

Thanks for the encouragement, everybody. :) I will, of course, make lefty icons for pauldrons/gloves/gauntlets that can be dropped in as a pluginless replacer for my Left Gloves Addon mod.

And this icon replacer will also be pluginless.

Anyone know why the exquisite robe mesh is tinted yellow when it is rendered in the CS window? I put it in my own blank interior cell and set all the lighting to White, so I don't know why I'm getting color distortion.

-----------
1) the GND mesh for the Indoril Gauntlet does not look like the skins or 1st person hand gauntlets. Why? Same thing for the Nordic Mail gauntlets, though I like the ground mesh's texturing better than the skins' version.

2) I made a GND mesh for the Chitin Pauldron that combines the upper and lower (UL and CL) parts of the pauldron. Groovy, huh? I'll probably do this with any other odd-balls I find. May or may not be included in this mod, I haven't decided what to do with it yet. Depends on how many others I have to make. Regardless, the new icon for the chitin pauldron (and indoril gauntlet) now looks like the pauldron that appears when you put it on your character, as opposed to whatever oddness gets dropped on the ground.

3) I cheat. Sometimes I erase some stuff on the pauldron or greaves that sticks out too much. It gets cropped, so in order to have a small border, I just erase it (glass pauldron is one example). I also do some strategic cleanup with meshes... like how the tops of skirts and bottoms of some chest-only cuirasses have extra mesh sticking up (you don't see it in-game 'cause your character's body overlaps it). [/compulsive honesty]

I never meant to imply you were. I was only going off of what I saw on my screen, sorry if I came across as rude about it.

This all sounds (and looks!) rather excellent, thank you for taking the time to make them (and all the other tidying up you're doing). And...

I think you are my favorite modder for this kind of things; your ingenuity is always the proverbial slap in the head of "why didnt anyone think of that?" kind , these icons look lovely

I didn't take it that you were being rude. It's difficult to discern tone from text, but my comment about newbishness was playful, not affronted. :)

Progress:
All Morrowind Armor is done (yay!)
All Bloodmoon Armor is done (more yay!)

Next: TB armors. I want to get all the armor work done all at once. Same with the other categories. That way, they can be as consistent as possible.

Mesh changes (will be an optional part of the mod)
- Chitin pauldron (gnd)
- Templar pauldron gnd (plus I fixed the usual CL pauldron, but I'll have to test it in-game to see if I didn't accidentally introduce clipping issues)
- a better nordicmail pauldron ground mesh
- that better silver cuirass from my Misc Projects thread
- any applicable material properties changes (changing ambient from black (wtf bethesda) to white, or removing any icky vertex colors)

Ah, okay :D Even over the internet, I'm usually fairly good at detecting when somebody is joking around vs. when they're serious. I must be getting old

This looks great, by the way. If you're still bored after finishing with this, if you want I could send you the files for my unique items replacer and you could make icons for those too! :D :foodndrink:

 Nice, I always like mods that do just "small" improvements, but making the game look so much better. Still it′s sad that it′s not possible with MW engine to include at least a little bigger icons, 32x32 is just very small. But you are getting the best out of this tiny size that is possible. :)
