Idea for demo

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 1:46 pm

I had an idea for the demo of Skyrim:

Why not let us play the story of our hero getting imprisoned?
That way we wouldn′t be spoiler-ed the beginning of Skyrim and we can build our hero before the game comes out (we would just import that character into Skyrim).

I know that there will probably no demo at all because the game is so big, but I think my idea would solve that problem.

What are your ideas?

Most people like not having anything to do with the character before he is impisoned. And most people don't want a demo either. Me? I'm kinda "eh" on that.

the idea seams okay until we get to the importing part, because one of the thing of TES games is starting from the basic of unknown, however recreating a character in the exact same way wont mess up and personal story you create for you character because skills decrease while in jail

That is a good point. Many players (actually me included) like roleplaying the background of their heros.
I think the only thing that would need to be importable would be the appearance.

Maybe some of you have a better idea?

No as I prefer to RP and invent my character's backstory in my head.

Ick. Rather smells of desperation over all the shot-down "Import Oblivion save [character's looks/PC to use as Sheogorath cause, y'know, our last character beat Shivering Isles/so we can "inherit" items from a long-lost ancestor]" to me.

I know that there will probably no demo at all because the game is so big, but I think my idea would solve that problem.

Based on past experience with Bethesda, rest assured there's no "probably" to it and not for any reasons your idea would "solve."

What are your ideas?

I'd suggest forgetting about the demo that won't happen and waiting for the game's release myself.

I'd prefer a gameplay demonstration like the 5 part gameplay walk through with Todd Howard in Oblivion. The only difference being a lot of the content will still be in Skyrim lol.

I can't see them doing a demo because Bethesda never made one for Morrowind or Oblivion. Redguard had one though, so nothing is impossible. Maybe they could release a small one in an interior setting, a cave or ruin... maybe a multi-layered one. It would be nice to get a feel for the combat w/o giving too much away.

I would appreciate a character builder before the release, but I would prefer that the reason My character is imprisoned become apparent moments after i get out of prision and start looting and pillaging everything in sight.

That would never be released because todd howard said that the whole starting the game imprisoned gives people a chance to come up with their own reason for it. He said that he likes it like that so they would never release a demo that has a set reason why youre imprisoned. it would take away from the fun of the beginning.

how about a small section of the game that is in the late beta stage that you can play in for 30 mins to an hour?

that's what a lot of sandbox games like to do for their demos and I have at least gameflyed every one that i tired.

The Experience of an Elder Scrolls game, doesn't translate well to a 15min-30min bite. The only people who would actually appraise the game from the demo properly, are the people who are going to buy it anyway.

Games have to be incredibly desperate to have a demo. I said it before, and I will say it again, good games do not NEED demo's.

You can't demo a game like this. What do you let the player do and not do? Let them explore just a section of the map? One of the best part of the ES series is coming out of the Tutorial dungeon and not knowing where anything is for the most part. A demo would ruin that feeling.

I want a demo because I want to know if I'll be able to play this game on my computer before I go spend $60 on it! Dragon Age 2 has a free demo download, and so should Skyrim when it gets closer to November.

Think I remember hearing this on the Bioware forums prior to the release of the first Dragon Age.

The Whole idea of being imprisoned is that you can make up your own story before that, to fit your character.

Although an interesting idea, I don't think they should (nor do they need to) invest time into a demo.
