So there's a seer , either she was made to see the future from the effects of nuclear radiation or she has always had the gift. She's a character shrouded in mystery. There's something you want from the seer so she gives you a quest.
She tells you that the tribal village of the verdant green valley that initially led you to the seer will see three deaths in the next day. The objective of the quest is to stop at least one of these.
The first person to die, she says, is a boy named Howitzer. Coincidentally, Howitzer is the companion the village assigned to you to guide you to the seer. While travelling with him you learn that he's a troubled kid with a penchant for thievery. But today, declares the seer, he will cross the line and die for it.
The second person to die, says the seer, will be the oldest of the village who will stubbornly offer herself up as a sacrifice to the greater good.
And the third person to die, will be the mechanic. To suicide wrought from the lonliness of life in the new world. For the suicide death, the seer even gives you the exact time this will take place, 12:05 am.
Howitzer remarks that the seer is crazy and mostly just senile and lucky. On your way out of the seer's cave one of her guards stops you. He tells you that they observed the boy stealing from both you and the seer. Sure enough, it's revealed that he took something valuable from you
On returning to the tribal village alone, you speak to the elder who gives you details on the two left that the seer predicts will die and implores you to save them.
If you head out to the suicidal mechanic (I'll name her Kaley) in her hut, she'll tell about how harsh wastelenad life can be for someone like her. She's the youngest in the tribe and has no one to talk to and is too weak to leave. She thinks she'll die alone and just wants to end it. By saying the right things, and maybe with a moderate amount of speech skill, the player can easily talk her out of it. Kaley will sigh and give you her noose. She doesn't look very happy still but I guess that's one death taken care of at least.
Finally, you talk to the 'grandmother' of the village (let's say named Emerald). She knows it's her time soon and she also is acutely aware of how dire the tribe's food situation is. From the days of her youth, she remembers how the passing of village elders was a time where people celebrated long lives lived full and ate heartily. Emerald knows this won't happen for her though. So she wants to sacrifice herself now and have the villagers feast on her cooked remains. Most of the people in the village are against this, but after a lifetime of personal sacrifice for the greater good of the tribe she is fixated on doing this one last thing for them. Being incredibly stubborn she can't be talked out of it with anything less than speech 100 so she's mostly likely going to die.
After you fail at the conversation with Emerald, the game brings you to the campfire where Emerald has cooked herself and some of the more starving or more 'adventurous' villagers are having Emerald steak. The player can choose to eat or not, but also ambiently hears people talk about how great she was, with some supporting her final decision and others reviled by it.
Suddenly, your pipboy blinks to mark midnight and you remember how the seer originally marked Kacey's death at 12:05. So, just to be sure, you go to Kacey's hut and she greets you with a gun pointed in your face. She tells you that the canibalism of Emerald pushed her over the edge and she blames you. She says she's going to shoot you, that she knows you could easily kill her but doesn't care because she wants to die too.
So Kacey is now marked red, the player can either kill her or disable her gun in VATs or simply keep her weapon holstered. The choice isn't explicitly given though, all you see is that she's now an enemy. She won't take the first shot. If you did not kill her than you'll have bested the seer's prediction (+good karma). Otherwise all the seer's predictions have come true.
What happens as a consequence, I'll leave open.
