Idea to improve the Radio

Post » Fri Jan 09, 2009 11:01 am

You can ask any Fallout-er what their biggest complaint with the radio is, and they are sure to answer with the lack of variety (or Three-daaaawg). Now, all the Xbox players with Live know about the Last.Fm app on the Xbox 360 dashboard that freely streams basically every song ever made. Some might have noticed that the app lets you select music (with incredible variety) from each decade (starting with the 40's, I think) and that Fallout uses music from the 50's and 60's.
How great would it be if Bethesda formed some sort of partnership with Last.fm to stream 50's and 60's music into the Pip-boy radio? They could even have certain genres streamed into certain stations (50's country into Black Mountain Radio, for example) and with hundreds of different songs to choose from, the problem of the tedium of hearing Johnny Guitar 400,000 times becomes nonexistent, and MASSIVELY improves the atmosphere and usability of the radio stations. This also wouldn't be the first a video game company teamed with an outside business to improve the game, EA Sports and the Weather Channel joined to load the real-life weather conditions of football stadiums into the game's digital counterpart.
If I could pick one feature to be added to the next Fallout, it would most definitely be this.

Would like it if they paired up with Grooveshark :D. Either that or Zune's music (even current, c'mon its a alternate reality so Linkin Park was made in the 40's :D.

Has anyone considered that the main reason why there is not that many songs on the radio is because of a Nuclear armageddon followed by decades where people had better things to do then find old music.

Styles, Im going to politely say this but that is not a very good excuse for the radio in a game ^_^

Rather, I would say that the main reason that there's not so much variety on New Vegas's radio is because I would guess that getting the rights to a Frank Sinatra song cost a pretty penny (but Blue Moon is perfect IMO)

*puts on troll face* :cheat:
but it only costed me a dollar and 29 cents.

on a more serious note, i aggre with this, theyd destroy a big amount of their budget if they put too many songs on it.

Yeah I would imagine that "Blue Moon" alone must have cost the same as 2 or 3 of Fallout 3's songs. As a whole I like Fallout 3's music better (not a big fan of country and I hate Johhny Guitar and Mad About the Boy), but New Vega's radio isn't bad, Frank Sinatra makes up for it (as usual).

Plus you can't make a rat-pack era influenced Vegas game and NOT have Sinatra in it. That would be a sin against nature (pun completely intended).

Why would a 1940's JUST touching 1950 USA have music from the 1960s? Last thing I want to hear is terrible hippy music or the beatles. Both are terrible and would ruin that nostalgic Americana of the game.

Anywho, I think they should focus on quality of the radio without buying up songs with high license fees.

I turn all game music off in every single game I play.
There are games I've played since 1980 that I have no idea what the music has ever sounded like.
To me the music just becomes repetitive in an extremely short amount of time, and
svcks up resources that are better put to use elsewhere.

I've tried turning the music on, and with the music on, I notice a bit more 'stutter' graphically,
so I turn it off.

well i am with you there, the radio svcks badly. and tell me how it didnt cost them that much to use things like the Andrew Sisters and The Ink Spots and Billie Holiday and Bing Crosby in FO3 but cost them and arm and a leg to do one good Sinatra song and Jingle Jangle Jingle. that doesnt make sense. also Three Dog always updated you on what was goin on in the wasteland and always had a good intro every time he mentioned you (that would be 90 pre made intros {EC whos that? its buddah! its Jesus! no! its the Hero of the Wastes!!!!}) so MR new vegas was boring and uninformitive. thats from a game player POV

now from a programmers POV- they probably cut down on the radio and songs so that they would have more mem and wouldnt have to use up so much more ram for the radio and concentrate more on graphics, weapon effects, sprites, polygons, video things of that nature. 20 songs+ a few mr new vegas qwips+ black mountain qwips (thats like 3 lol)+ the whole randomizer program + 3 Different radio stations + about 500MB to 1GB of garbage that could have been turned into about 50 new weapons, 100 new mods, 50 new NPCs, and so on and so fourth. they have been able to compress game files and graphic textures but music and sound files cannot be compressed nearly as much.

i can defend them and attack them at the same time. in summary what they could have done is gotten a bunch of kinda good songs like they did in Fallout 3 instead of the 2 good songs and 18 badly horrid songs

If I listen to real music, it's usually Lygeti's "Atmospheres" or Lygeti's "Lux Aeterna",
not that other horrid "Lux Aeterna" from "Requiem for a dream" that is used in almost every video on Youtube, man I hate that song.....

I haven't listened to the radio in at least 180 hours of gameplay. I just listen to the fantastic score by Mark Morgan and Inon Zur. Much more atmospheric and fitting.

I only wish they'd bring back the awesome ambient tracks. Altough they included a couple of them in New Vegas, it was not enough.

I just use my own mp3 player now - besides I'd rather hear 'Run to the Hills' by Iron Maiden or 'Bodies' by Drowning Pool than listen to 'Johnny Guitar' one more time!!

I miss having a President Eden type character. He was much more interesting to listen to than Three Dog who was just so right-on as to be annoying.

On a positive note Mr. New Vegas is a great imporvement on Three Dog. "Wooops! Time to put on my newsman fedora again.."
