Idea: Non-console command way to delete objects.

Post » Wed Dec 02, 2015 8:55 am

What this game really needs that previous games have not done is a way to permanently delete stuff from your inventory via a "destroy" function. Crafting games have this in some fashion, such as throwing things in lava in Minecraft to an actual inventory screen function in Terraria. Howard and Hines did say they drew inspiration for the crafting system from those games. Why can't we have this function rather than relying on the console command 'mark for delete'? Just a thought I had.

Because nothing in your inventory should be junk now. Everything can be broken down into base bits and pieces. Personally speaking thats enough of a delete feature for me. It does remain to be seen if weapons/armor can be broken down to its component parts.

True. Though some people may just want to clear their inventory for whatever reason, not bothering to deposit for later use or scrap for parts. I guess you could say one man's treasure is another man's trash. As for breaking down weapons and armor, the E3 crafting footage shows you can scrap weapons for parts. Power armor doesn't seem to be scrap-able though.

I would actually like this idea. Usually if I want to get rid of something I simply drop it into a large body of water.

Scrapping junk for components seems like the way to go (unless you can't stand the idea of having more screws and copper), but honestly if I want to throw something away in a Bethesda game I either drop it on the ground or leave it in a random container to disappear when the area respawns.

That's...actually a good point. I never even thought of it, honestly.

Except those infamous cases where objects never disappear, cluttering and inflating the size of the save.

Right. We shouldn't actually drop stuff on the ground for that reason, although it only becomes a problem if you're dropping like hundreds of items through the course of a character. But dropping it in a respawning container works for me. Or a corpse. You know those things are gonna clean up... unless they're ash piles. :P

Oh, that's another thing we should be able to dispose of: corpses. We could do it in Morrowind, why not now?

I mean, ehhh. It was kinda cool in Morrowind, although I only ever really used it when there was a pile of corpses and the activator only let me pick one out. That's not a problem with the new games. And I'd rather see them incorporate corpse management as a gameplay mechanic for stealthy characters, where NPCs will raise alarm if they detect a corpse - being able to just delete the corpse like that would defeat the purpose.

If I need to get rid of something like evidence, I put in a dead guy's pocket and just wait for him to despawn. Works like a charm.

Not sure why it's difficult to find an unused container and pile all your unwanted junk in it....that's what I do in all Beth games.

you can drop it on the ground, but Beth games have been notorious for not cleaning up dropped items or bodies and a large number of items in a cell can lead to save game bloat.

Having an ingame function to destroy inventory items will ALWAYS lead to Customer Support issues that could have been avoided by simply NOT having said feature.

Yeah, I've used the dead guy container a bunch. People do tend to get suspicious of you after a while, what, with a dead body sitting in your front lawn holding 538 empty bottles and 4 plungers.

Anyway, it's not like you can make things just disappear IRL. Like, how do you destroy a pile of scrap metal? Unless you have a furnace, it's pretty much reduced to its lowest level of being.

What I would like, however, is a force drop option for stuck quest items, so I guess that would be sort of the same function.

But, ideally, you'll be able to turn everything into something and use it, so you shouldn't ever have to feel like you need to get rid of something.

"Whaaaa, I accidentally deleted my best gun! Please give it back!"

Really, just dumping unwanted items into a container is fine. Once you do that, it's just a reference on a list rather than a model in the worldspace. It shouldn't significantly bloat your save file.

I can't imagine anyone being dumb enough to ask Customer Support to bring their gun back if they accidentally deleted it. And this issue can be prevented in the first place if the item deletion mechanic is properly implemented. Such as via confirmation screen, or in Terraria, where the item isn't deleted until it's overlapped by another item placed in the trash. But yeah, I suppose placing items in a literal garbage can in the game world would probably suffice if they do in-fact reset in the game, which may not necessarily be the case. I'd prefer a guaranteed function for item removal, even if it's just an incinerator "container" you can make and place in your settlement, where items you place in there are destroyed when you leave the deposit screen.

Really, all I want from quest items is that they have their own inventory tab, and to make it a little more obvious that quest items don't add to your carry weight. Out of sight, out of mind.

I simply sell or give my unwanted things to a merchant. When their inventory refreshes, it should be gone. Problem solved.

It's worse than you think actually.

Every time you bump an object out of place its new position has to be saved.

Every explosion that knocks items in a room out of place instantly makes every item moved bloat your save.

This would actually be a good idea for a mod, some kind of ability that moves all items nearby back to their original spot so that the save can stop tracking them.

Unless the game has significantly changed. It must needs remember every single time you drop something in the game world.

Better to containerize in whatever random container you come across.. Any junk you want to throw away or drop.

In my experience this was never that huge a problem, and moved objects will eventually reset back to their original position. Next time I set off a bomb or Shout at a dining room table, though, I'll pay closer attention.
