RP Idea - The Gauntlet

Post » Tue Mar 30, 2010 1:37 am

I was in a forum RP once, and it had a "Do or Die" philosophy. If your character died, it was gone for good, and you never knew just what would come your way. Another character might attack you and overpower you, or you may try to run and fail. The thing is, it creates suspense and really attaches you to your character and causes you to be a bit more realistic, something I want in this RP.

Using that "do or die" idea, I got a great idea I was toying with and decided to apply it here.

The BoS and the Outcasts have both picked up very strange radio signals coming from an unknown location. After several months, both were able to decode it and triangulate its origin. The transmissions are a recurring, coming from a lone soldier in a hidden military base. From what they have, the soldier had locked himself in a chamber within the facility to wait out nuclear holocaust. After realizing the dwindling food supply and the radiation beginning to seep into his water reservoir, he tried to leave. The security systems came online as soon as his door was breached, forcing him to go back. He wrote his last suicide message and turned it onto one of the radios making it play out all the way to DC.

He described an incredible breakthrough in science, a large-scale reusable GECK. From what he had read, it could restore the entire eastern coasts due to the water and manipulate weather to grow crops. He had plans to use it himself, but the security system would kill him anyways. After he finished, he opened up the doors into the GECK's room and was cut down by the security force. Anyone brave enough and armed enough has the chance to claim this item; for good or evil.

You may be part of the BoS or Outcast detachment. You will battle each other, along with the many traps and dangers set in the security mechanism of the base. The dangers are real; if your character is hurt, there is no escaping for help. If he dies, you are gone for good. The only way to survive is to reach the GECK control room and shut of the security.

I plan on adding in a self-aware robot like a ZAX that speaks to the intruders through the speaker system or while they're alone, watches their every move, and sends out security bots to finish him off.

There will be things such as heavily armored sentry bots, Mister Gutsy's that float out of the ventilation system, the self-aware system locking doors or blocking off passages.

I also plan on adding scenarios, such as one group being locked into a room while it fills with carbon monoxide, and they must find a way to shut it off or break out. There will be a near indestructible Prototype Mister gutsy that stalks the players throughout the journey, making them break paths of forcing themselves into more traps.

Tell me what you think and give suggestions.

Francois likes the idea and is going to be the "Stalker" robot. I will be the self aware security system and possibly have another human character.

You're going to get the feeling of a freeform RP, but using subtle techniques, I'll put you right where I want you. :)

So, again, if you have scenario ideas or security ideas, post them here.

Oh, and all of the puzzles and scenarios will have to be solely player solved, creating a rapport among both sides, consdiering they have to communicate through PMs to overcome the challenges.

Yep, this RP is perfect for me as I'm not completely dependant... I just add the flavour of fear and wonder at the idea of being nigh on un-killable, :P. Oh and by the way Stream, would you like me to post up a little char sheet of the Gutsy to show a little bit about him or..?

Actually, I was going to leave it up to you.

Perhaps you don't want to be a gutsy or want to be another model. Maybe you want to create an entirely new robot? Like, say, a steel plated mechanical T-51b unit with laser eyes. :P

I'm trying to find way to overcome stuff like that. I'm considering having anyone who dies be able to take control of a security unit, just so they can still have a part.

I suggest creating several characters. And if one dies, then you can always revert back to another. But in the mean time, the character(s) you aren't currently playing, would act as NPCs?

I actually was considering that, but I don't want it to take away from the suspense. I don't know, that's probably what will happen, but I'll find a way to balance it. I want this to be different from other RPs in the sense the danger is unsuspecting and is real. Mistakes and heroics could cost you your pretend life!

Sounds pretty sweet, i'll join in if you guys will have me. Some trap ideas might be a long corridor were if you step on the wrong pannel, a huge sentry gun pops out of the floor from behind and infront of you, spreading hot molten death to all in their path.

Well... I guess I'll just come up with a couple of choices and you vote for which one looks most interesting?

--------------------------------

Name: T-57A

Age: However old the place is?

Appearance: Normal Gutsy Model with a few changes: Reskinned armor coloured black and red with blue effects.

Weapons: Superheated turbo plasma rifle, liquid cooled fast fire flamethrower, 9' saw blade.

Personality: Umm... He's trying to kill you and doesn't like humans?

Tactics: Quite simple really, if he's far from you, he'll melt you with his plasma rifle. If your medium range, he'll burn you with his flamethrower. If your close he'll cut you into small bits.

Fear Factor: Most people are quite scared at the sight of a reskinned Gutsy. 7/10

History: He doesn't really have one...

---------------------------------------------------

Name: Sentinel A-717

Age: However old the place is.

Appearance: Normal Sentry Bot with a few changes: Reskinned with white background, black overlays in certain places and red effects. Eyes of the bot are yellow.

Weapon: Gattling laser mounted right arm-Upgraded to fire faster, beams have a purplish hue. High velocity missle launcher mounted left arm-Upgraded to fire faster and missles have higher explosive impact upon targets.

Personality: May say a few words to you before brutally killing you.

Tactics: At long ranges he'll bombard you with his missles, medium to close quarters he'll just turn you to ash with his gattling laser.

Fear Factor: Most people don't like Sentry Bots, and this is no different. 9/10

History: Doesn't have one.

-----------------------------------------

Name: Lord Benjamin

Age: However old the place is-yet again.

Appearance: Almost looks like a protectron, but doesn't have the same type of helmet, legs are not rickety and arms aren't bent in a weird fashion. Outer coating is layered with a red hue and blue shine the closer you get. Scary looking face helmet that sends fear through most people, as the helmet is in the shape of a dead man. Blood and all.

Weapons: Superheated laser rifle mounted right arm, beam is coloured blue and much more powerful than even plasma. Super fast firing minigun mounted left arm, takes a long time to overheat and can take down even something like a Super Mutant in a second.

Personality: Nicest of the three choices, tends to have a quick conversation before turning you into ash.

Tactics: Uses both weapons at his leisure.

Fear Factor: Most people think protectron's are pathetic, but when they see the face and notice that this thing is moving faster than a human sprinting... 10/10

History: It's plagued with death, what more do I have to say?

---------------------------------------------

That's what I could come up with on the spot, which one to pick?

I suggest restricting the players to having 3 total characters or 2 if they like? Then you won't have people with like 20 characters, all just waiting to be killed and then being able to jump to another? In fact, I would restrict them from being able to jump from one character to another. So they have to use the one character first, then go to another, and if that one dies, the very last one?

I'd like to get in on it. Seems like a good idea to leap onto this whole revival thing and learn what I can.
I think the idea of being given a Security Robot part's pretty interesting, actually, once your main character dies.

It is possible to rp more than one charcter at one time, as long as people are smart about it.

Sorry Andy, I had dinner. I really don't mind which one you use, they all sound great. Though, honestly, I'm more partial to having a humanoid type stalker myself, but your character is completely your own.

Perhaps a sentry bot/proctecton hybrid? A humanoid like robot built like a tank?

Yes, it also plays in on "The Replicated Man". Perhaps there was a small squad of android soldiers stationed there?

Perhaps, but I still need to polish the edges on this. Create more names and scenarios, and the storyline tied within it have a few twists I need to make sure the two squads will find through my manipulation.

But if you have Androids, then brings up the question of, "If I shoot it in the head, does it die?" The only real weakness I can see the Android having, is a Pulse Grenade or something along those lines, unless a BOS or Outcast member has a Missile Launcher or Mini-gun etc. to seriously pound their circuits? But I think having Androids would add an interesting side to it?
