It's probably a good thing, actually. I mean, this is either because it's one of the thing's Bethesda's most proud of, or they just don't want to give away too much information and so keep showing us a dog.

Or I guess Todd could just really love dogs and thinks that is is the best feature in the game

Preston Garvey is both the leader of a faction and a possible companion. He already seems to have more personality than the Skyrim ones, which is great.

I wouldn't get too excited. Bethesda could have just focused more on other things. Companions could still be one dimensional, just less of them. I do hope we get more in depth companions though.
