For those of you who haven't seen this (as if IGN is "respected" by most gamers)

I don't get why everyone hates IGN, I see nothing wrong with them, most of their reviews especially for the Fallout DLCs were spot on. But as for this post, I don't care much about graphics (I play Morrowind more often than Oblivion), but I guess its nice that Skyrim is slightly improving. But the fact that it will be released for consoles limits the improvement. If it were PC exclusive the graphics would be amazing.

Pretty basic, didn't point out anything I couldn't make out at a glance. However, the article didn't really loose me unitl it suggested that an RPG with dragons is instantly beter than and RPG without one.

"These winged monsters [dragons] make Skyrim instantly better than Oblivion. Dragons are the nuclear weapons of fantasy games."

Ugh. I have nothing against IGN (don't tend to use it myself) but these statements are just pathetic. Not only are they promoting one of general fiction's most tired clichés (nuclear weapons of fantasy... yeah, way to encourage an unhealthy obsession with generic and uninspired themes, ignoring actual originality and creativity) but as a professional game reviewing website they suggest that Skyrim might be 'instantly better' than its predecessor simply for its motif, and not its actual gameplay, atmosphere, etc. With that argument, all Spyro games are instantly better than Oblivion.

Oh my god. So much said in that article is wrong... Like they say, you can't spell ignorance without IGN.

i gotta agree with you on this. especially the spyro comment :liplick:
but bethesda, for the most part, is really good at taking traditional fantasy elements and making them unique to TES. a few examples would be the dwarves (they're both extinct and used to be elves), orcs (not evil or sinister). also the way different gods are perceived differently by each race and belief. so i have faith that bethesda will make dragons different, and refreshing. doesn't seem to me like they'll just sit in a giant cave guarding they're treasure the whole game :D
he's to them not being the "nuclear weapons of fantasy" :foodndrink:

The graphics appear to be around 30-40% better overall, who couldn't be happy

Really there were only a few things wrong with oblivion visuals, even by todays standards (horrible faces, no dynamic shadows)... looks like skyrim resolved them so we're all good.

Man, I lost respect for IGN when I saw their Fable 3 review. :shakehead:
They pointed out all of the few things thats good about it, but they forgot to mention the more than 100 reasons it's freaking unplayable! :verymad:

I think it's because they were really good a few years back, but they've lost their credibility. A lot of their old Nintendo reviewers (guys that helped found the site all those years ago) have left, and they were replaced by editors who have no professional sense of journalism, video gaming or retaining an unbiased opinion.

IGN is becoming pretty infamous for giving reviews that are clearly bought or have no intellectual backing, and their arrogance that's starting to build up isn't helping. They also don't have any real originality in their opinions from other sites - when Guitar Hero was disbanded last week, every single editor had the exact same opinion as the rest and claimed that they were the first to call it, yet many of them continued to give high ratings to these games when they were released. In all, they've sort of become whipped by the industry.

I like IGN more than many other sites, but they still frustrate me.

There's something to be said about graphics style differences too, instead of just graphical improvement. When I think about Oblivion I think shades of green everywhere. Green grass, green ground, green trees, green bushes. Looks like Skyrim will have more varied colours.
