IGN: What Skyrim Does And Doesn't Fix About Oblivion

Post » Thu Dec 15, 2011 4:34 pm

Article by IGN once again I think they're more wrong than right my thoughts on it.

http://pc.ign.com/articles/121/1213031p2.html

Combat:

- Is it better than Oblivion? Yes very much so

- Is it up to par with other combat mechanics in Fantasy games? Not by a long shot Demon Souls had way better combat and it came out 2 years ago.

Verdict: NOT FIXED (but better)

Animation:

- Mixed bag here my character doesn't pay attention or turn to face when someone is talking to them even tho it locks my character, faces are better than most games tho I would also like the upper face to move more, but whatever.

Verdict: Good Enough

Voice acting:

- I'm just glad not to hear the same old 7 voices over and over again with ever Female Dark elf sounding like a 90 year old women, but yeah they are right the accents are all over the place why does 1 Nord sounds like Arnold Schwarzenegger and his next sound like an old English men?

Verdict: Could Use Some Work (Consistency is important, you just can't hire more people and think it will work out.)

The Skills System: F#@%&*% BROKEN!!!

- I've never seen so many ways to exploit a game, 100% mana reduction on spell schools, using alchemy and enchanting to smith weapons to KO a dragon in one hit on master difficulty this is not fixed far from it.

Verdict: F#@%&*% BROKEN!!!

The Menu Interface:

- I've seen better and would like a way to swop weapon load outs like Demon Souls, but it's ok.

Verdict: It's Pretty Good

Pathfinding:

- What do you expect them to do IGN teleport you to every quest? You already have fast travel what more do you want? Why don't they just do the quest for you? Finding you way through your locations is part of the game.

Verdict: Fixed and Fixed Again!

Quest Writing:

- Not as many options as say a Bio-Ware game but agreed fixed

Verdict: Fixed

NPCs:

- Agreed once I go through a set of dialog I shouldn't be able to do so again, but thats a minor issue and a bit nitpicking, but I have no Idea why they would give an achievement to get married and than have 2 options of either "make me a sandwich" or "Give me money" Really no thought went into this and seems like it was just on a check list. If you're going to do something do it right.

Verdict: Not Fixed

Bugs:

- Don't fix the bug huh tell that to PS 3 owners with lag so bad it makes it unplayable.

Verdict: Not Fixed (and they better fix it soon)

Companions:

- NOT FIXED No Way in Hell! I'd rather have a choice between 5 interesting companions than 20 brain dead "Robots". The companions in Fallout NV were a lot better.

Verdict: "Quality Before Quantity" This is actually my biggest complaint of the game. They really should of taken a page out of Bio-Ware's folder and made "Companions with Personality's" NOT FIXED!!!

I chose Pathfinding (mainly for NPCs), because when I have to follow an NPC to a location, they veer off into the woods every 30 seconds to relieve themselves and then run back onto the main path, which gets annoying fairly quickly.

regarding path finding, I find by looking at the map, you can get a good idea on where you can travel and where you can't. I think the worst I've gotten is had to turn around and lose just a few minutes of time. No big deal and adds to the immersion imo.

looking at the mountains, you can see the little breaks in it that means you can travel through it

The skills system is fine. You have to choose to exploit it, nothing is broken.

- Agreed once I go through a set of dialog I shouldn't be able to do so again,

What happens if I miss what they said because another NPC interrupted our conversation? What happens if I forget something and need to hear it again? Not having the option to listen to dialog again is stupid.

I think that has to do more with NPC issues than pathfinding. Pathfinding is just that dot on the map or the spell that gives you a waypoint. IMO I think you should just have to cast it once to give you a way point instead of a constant mana drainer, but that's a minor issue.

People still care about the opinions of IGN's Hipster Army of journalists?

Agree with some of IGNs assessments, but I actually am loving the combat. I guess my biggest gripes would be the menu system (works for an i-phone, but it just feels to future-y and out of place in a fantasy world), and the map (whose idea was it to make the overworld map scaled waaaay back and covered in fog/clouds? As much as I love wandering around in this game, I am already planning on putting in well over 100 hours. I don't need to artificially extend that to 200 just because I can't tell from the map that I am heading into a giant, impassable mountain....

Can't say I'm a big fan of the new inventory interface. It tries to be very intuitive and streamlined, and while it succeeds in a sense, it feels very.... disconnected and awkward at times. Especially when it lags (On Xbox360).

Not a major fan of the favorite system either, I liked being able to change spells or weapons on the fly, without disrupting the gameplay. Can't do it?

Really my only complaint about the game. I don't mind the limited NPC pvssyr, I don't mind the disconnected companion feeling, and I actually rather like the new leveling and skill system.

The fact that you can is proof enough that it is. And the Destruction Skills could be reworked a bit for higher levels.

Agreed It was nitpicking, my main issue was with the second part of the paragraph.

The glitches are one thing, but quest breaking and game killing bugs are another.

After the Dark Souls vs Skyrim charade, I think it's safe to say IGN care about nothing more than stirring up trouble to get page views. Recently it seems they've been employing some ridiculous kind of ignorant elitism in order to fake an air of knowledge about the subject. Mindless criticism doesn't automatically make you smarter.

It's rare that I find myself agreeing with IGN. Must be a good writer. :)

I've said it multiple times, but this game falls into a lot of the same traps that Oblivion did and brings a lot of it's own, too. It's a great world and the lore is all there, but the game is broken on a mechanics and gameplay basis.

IMO, IGN and GameSpot have their heads so far up Demon/Dark Souls butts that they aren't in any position to judge other RPGs.

I absolutely love the Souls games, and I think I'd put both of them in my top 10 of all time, but you're totally correct. I think it's the fact they're Japanese-made games that somehow make GS and IGN feel "pro" for "finding them" or some other BS like that. It's that smug sense of enlightenment we're probably all guilty of when playing a relatively unknown game that happens to be fantastic, only they're making their smugness way too public.

Gamespots not too bad, they'll ban you is you sneeze wrong on their forums, but at least they don't get fan boys to write every review.

IMO I think Gametrailers is the best followed by Giant Bomb and 1 Up

I think IGN is right and I agree. I like having glitches such as the Giant smashing you or companions into the air. It gives the game a light-hearted feel which can also be pretty funny. It does ruin the realism of the game but adds humour. I play on the PS3 and I haven't had that bug that causes your framerate to drop and you lag, luckily. When he says glitches he's talking about the ones that give entertainment not the ones that cause the game to have actual problems. I think the AI is still not very smart either.

About the Pathfinding though... I don't think it's bad. I like following the arrow straight ahead and then realize that I'm blocked by swaps or mountains. If I was really lost I could always use Clairvoyance which would light up a path for me. If a mountain does block the path, go around it and you might even find something special.

This is one thing I've seen while hanging around the boards and I just don't understand it.

I never played Morrowind, so I know most of you will look down on me.
But

It's a single player game. If it's a way to exploit the game, and you're not happy with it, then, uh, don't do it? It's not like the twelve-year-old playing WOW keeps killing you in one shot. Just don't do it. Smithing is too powerful? Don't use it. The Horses can climb up at 90% angles? Don't ride them.

What is wrong with you people? Do you just really enjoy complaining?

That's kind of what I thought too. Or they think that since they're playing such a difficult game that others don't compare combat-wise.

Gamespot mentions Dark Souls in almost every video now, that's why I said them too lol. If I had to choose 'best' reviewers by overall fairness and knowledge, I'd have to put GameInformer first.
