ill informed about the definition of MB and MiB

Post » Fri Dec 11, 2015 5:34 am

The Trouble Brewin' Quest leads you to a walking mini brewery named buddy.

he serves out ice cold brews along with an assortment of jokes.

one of such jokes follows along the lines of:
"There was a band called 2023 MB, they haven't had a gig yet."

This spreads more misinformation about the old definition of MB as it has been renamed to Mebibyte(MiB)

I don't have permission to post links

so Google Mebibyte or Tebibyte

I know its meant purely as a joke with no ill intentions but more people need to be informed on this and this is one of the best ways i could think of spreading it a bit...ever buy a hard drive and its not a full 1TB by the old definition being 1024GB but is only 1000GB without the tables and other things, just talking raw space.

----*

the more you know, yes I literally just heard about this

It has been 17 years since it was announced and hasn't caught on so it is doubtful that MiB will be anything more than Men in Black as far as most people are concerned. I seriously doubt that most people have even heard of a Mebibyte.

Wow. I've been out-nerded. Congratulations.

It still makes more sense to me to use bytes, since they're based on binary values, where bits are factors of 10s. Computers are binary, so... yeah.

I also learned that it would take approximately 1045 bits (not bytes) to recreate an average advlt male human. That's 2150 in binary digits. Which works out to the integer 1,809,251,394,333,065,553,493,296,640,760,748,560,207,343,510,400,633,813,116,524,750,123,642,650,624.

That's a lot of things. A whole lot.

Headcanon: Those naming conventions didn't change in the Fallout universe. :P

for some reason, this makes me want to talk about the new measuring system for commercial audio that's being implemented. for anyone that cares about dynamic range or TV commercials that are obnoxiously louder than their programming, look up LUFS and cheer

What.

...

Okay, after googling a bit, my question is this: gibibyte? Tebibyte? Do others get Japanese cutesy-vibes from those?

Simple explanation is that those changes were never made in the Fallout universe. If THAT is spreading misinformation than someone needs to post a warning not to use fusion cells in our cars before something serious happens
